Southwest Airlines is a large US airline headquartered in Dallas, Texas. In fact, it is the world’s largest low-cost carrier. The airline was established in 1967 and adopted the name "Southwest" in 1971. It offers over 4,000 flights a day with 90+ destinations in the US and ten additional countries.

Southwest is one of the largest Boeing operators. In fact, it only operates 737s. Southwest has over 550 737s in service, with each of them getting around six to seven flights per day.

Southwest is not without controversy. Recently, the company got into trouble with the government for offering a quoted rate on its website that was not actually a real fare for any seat on a flight. Also, in July 2014, a customer and his family were asked to leave a flight because he was not allowed to board a flight early as an A-list member. He tweeted his dissatisfaction and was kicked off the flight and told to remove his tweet.

The Good

  • Low Cost
  • Two Bags Checked Free
  • On-Time Flights
  • Amenities and Entertainment

Low Cost

Southwest is a low-cost airline. Ticket prices are some of the lowest on the market. On top of its low prices, Southwest offers many discounts and promotions on their website. The rewards program is also beneficial and easy to use. It is clear to see how to earn a free flight through Southwest. These different promotions and specials available can help ensure that Southwest is the lowest price available for many domestic flights.

Two Bags Checked Free

Southwest has a generous checked baggage allowance—two free checked bags per passenger.

Many other airlines charge for more than one checked bag and some airlines don't allow any free checked baggage at all. This makes Southwest one of the top airlines for checked baggage.

Any checked bags (after the two free) cost $75 per bag.

There are size restrictions for baggage on Southwest Airlines. Bags need to be less than 50lbs and have dimensions (length + weight + height) of 62 inches.

Overweight items (51lbs to 100lbs) and oversized items (63 inches to 80 inches) will also be accepted at a fee of $75 per item.

On-Time Flights

Southwest Airlines has a very high on-time percentage for most of their flights: roughly 85% on-time, 6% late, 2% very late, and 4% excessively late (information according to Flightstats.com). This is higher than a number of other top airlines. However, some of the most-active routes received low ratings. Top flights include:

  • Burbank to Oakland (3.2 stars, 87% on time)
  • Phoenix to San Diego (3.2 stars, 85% on time)
  • Los Angeles to San Jose (3.2 stars 83% on time)

This shows that even top flights are barely receiving three stars. Southwest's lowest-ranked flight is Dallas to Austin, receiving only 1.5 stars and being on-time roughly 70% of the time. Many other top airlines have a large number their most active flights in the four-star range. Compared to this, Southwest does not compare as well as some other top airlines.

Amenities and Entertainment

Southwest offers many of the standard amenities when it comes to in-flight services. As a low-cost airline, some in-flight services are lacking when compared to those that other top airlines provide. Check out some of the airline's in-flight amenities:

  • Entertainment: Southwest allows passengers to use personal devices for their entertainment and provides free live and on-demand television. This includes 19 live channels and up to 75 TV episodes from popular series. There are also more than 25 current movie choices available for purchase on flights. Southwest does not have other means for entertainment besides passengers personal devices. Most other airlines have some sort of screen provided and many more options for media.
  • Food and dining: While a number of the major airlines offer meal options on their flights, this low-cost airline does not. However, complimentary drinks and snacks including pretzels and peanuts are available. Many other low-cost airlines do not offer any complimentary items like this.
  • Wi-Fi: For $8 a day, passengers can access wi-fi services on personal mobile devices to browse the web, check emails, and explore social media sites. This is also how the in-flight entertainment is streamed. This is a very affordable option that not every airline provides. However, not every flight with Southwest offers wi-fi. Passengers can check amenities with flight information on the Southwest website to check if their flight will have wi-fi or not. Flights without wi-fi service do not have other options for entertainment.

The Bad

  • Boarding Process
  • Open Seating Policy
  • Ten Minute Rule
  • Limited Destinations
  • Government Action
  • Limited Aircraft Comforts

Boarding Process

The boarding process on Southwest is slightly different than most other airlines. Instead of having passengers choose a seat with some type of interactive map during purchase or check-in, Southwest does not assign any seats. It gives a group (A, B, or C) and a number (1-60) to assign the order of boarding.

Open Seating Policy

Southwest uses an open seating policy so passengers can sit anywhere that is open once they have boarded the plane. This would make the boarding process less smooth than airlines that assign or let passengers choose seats beforehand.

With an open seating policy, passengers may be confused as to where to go and may run into more problems or potentially take longer to be settled on the plane.

Ten Minute Rule

Passengers are suggested to be ready to board the plane 30 minutes before departure time and must have their boarding pass and be at the gate at least 10 minutes before departure time. If they have not arrived at least 10 minutes before, Southwest will cancel the reserved space and the passenger will not be eligible for the denied boarding compensation.

Limited Destinations

Southwest flies to 90+ different destinations (mainly domestic), although international routes are available to the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America. This is a small number of destinations when compared to other airlines, such as United which flies to 300 different destinations and many more internationally.

Keep in mind that the 90+ served destinations cover most of the United States. For passengers that need to travel domestically, Southwest would most likely be able to serve in their desired destinations.

For passengers who want an airline that is able to take them to both international and domestic destinations, Southwest would most likely not be able to serve them the best. Looking at just the number of destinations, Southwest would be considered a small airline.

Government Action

There is an alert for this company because of a government action which was recently placed against them in 2014. At that time, Southwest advertised $59 flights to certain destinations. However, after an investigation, it was shown that there were no seats available to any destination at that price.

The airline was fined for their deceptive advertising. This false advertising is a red flag for how Southwest has in the past conducted business.

Limited Aircraft Comforts

We also felt like the Boeing-driven fleet reduced some of the comfort creature features for customers. Generally, Airbus planes include bigger and better seats, with more seat pitch and width.

gavel

The Bottom Line

We recommend Southwest wholeheartedly. It is difficult to beat its prices. The Rewards points system is also great. Points don't ever expire, but you have to accrue points or keep your card active for 24 months. There are no blackout dates for your frequent flier points.

Southwest Airlines used to be my favorite airlines. I wasn't able to fly for awhile because my ex-husband didn't like spending money on anything but food. Thankfully he's out of the picture. It's really frustrating that the really cheap flights that Southwest offers, you can't cancel them and get your money back if for some reason you have to cancel. I know they say that you can use the tickets up to a year from when you cancel, but a lot of people work and it's not always easy to get off of work when you want or need to. But if you buy tickets that you can cancel, it costs way too much, it's ridiculous!!!! It's very disappointing because they used to be my favorite airline and I really want to fly on Southwest again. Especially because here in Lubbock, Texas, they still use regular sized jets where American and United have much smaller planes. And Southwest used to have some of their seats facing backwards, which I really loved sitting there!!!! I REALLY miss flying on Southwest Airlines and I really hope that I'm able to fly on them again sometime soon!!! I also wish their flights were available on Priceline and other similar websites!!!!

Southwest Airlines customer service overall is excellent! They were very helpful and compassionate about the experience that my son had during the power outage in Atlanta. We had to leave Atlanta because we live in another state without my son's luggage. I called the following day regarding how we would get his luggage without having to drive back to Atlanta because I had to work. Although the outage was not the fault of the airlines they made sure that we were compensated and look at it was delivered to our home. The representatives were very nice and very informative regarding the information.

I started flying Southwest immediately when they started servicing the Atlanta market in 2012. I fly to Los Angeles at least twice per year and to Pittsburgh at least four times. I have never had a bad experience with Southwest. Their prices are always reasonable and I have got some amazing deals during special sales (as low as $212 round-trip from ATL to LAX). In addition to their great pricing, the first two checked bags are free and they provide consistently good service and their flights are usually ahead of schedule! The only (minor) drawback is also one of the things that helps them keep their prices so low- no assigned seats. I'm 6'2" and have always purchase a seat in the exit row, window seat on other airlines for the legroom. To get these one of these seats on a Southwest flight, I need to have one of 1A-30A boarding passes. The nice thing is that have Early-Bird Check-in for $15/flight and that puts me in that group at least 75% of the time. The few times I haven't gotten in that boarding group, I was able to purchase an upgrade at the gate to put me in the 1A-15A boarding position for $30-$40. Money well spent and still a great deal, but I always have a little anxiety until I actually sit in the actual seat I want. Overall, for most people looking for a great deal on airfare, it doesn't get any better than Southwest!

As always, my latest round trip on Southwest was wonderful! I continue to praise SWA for allowing me to check my bag without dinging me with an extra fee. I always love the boarding pass groups and the ability to check in 24 hours in advance to print a boarding pass. This time my connections were between Tucson and Chicago(Midway). The only problem had NOTHING to do with Southwest and EVERYTHING to do with TSA's inability to handle crowds of passengers at the security check at Midway . If you depart from Midway, give yourself about an extra hour to get through their terrible TSA check. Thank goodness my most frequent travel patterns are in the real WEST where SWA is supreme!

I usually attempt to fly Southwest because I am a Rapid Rewards member and baggage is free, (understand it's probably in the cost of the ticket), however being asked for additional money in my face makes me happier about it. Last month they had some great specials on-line and when I attempted to buy the ticket it would not let me. I called Customer Service and the person was great (the wait time's are horrible so deducting a point), but they honored the on-line price, although customer service representative indicated that the sale was over, and that's why I could not buy ticket from web site, but since I could still see the price they had no problem honoring the advertisement. Great Service on the telephone and on the flights.

I was taking my son to his freshman year in college at The Virginia Military Institute from Houston on a 6 a.m. flight. We had been up since 3 a.m. We got bags checked and boarding passes but his said he needed to check in at gate to confirm seating or something, mine did not. But we did not even look at it after baggage check and no one pointed it out to us about his seat at baggage check. I had confirmed our reservation online the day before. So when time came to board, he was stopped and said he could not go with me on that flight unless someone volunteered on board to give up their seat. No one did...which meant I would get to Va. on time but he would have to arrive in Va. separately at 5 p.m. We would still have to drive 11/2 hrs to the college and we would miss the parent's reception. We were very upset and I was not going to fly without him. No matter who's fault it was, it was very upsetting. Turned out that an employee in charge of the seating and plane boarding etc. (so mad I did not write his name down), understood since he had just sent off his own college kids...and he would have been more upset he said. So he was kind enough to compensate us more than we expected (did not expect any compensation) in a check and he bought our lunch when we had to layover in Atlanta for 4 hours!! Still missed the reception but it made it so much easier to calm down...we realized the check would cover his college textbooks...and we had been struggling with that...Thank you Southwest!!!

Flying any airline has become a CHORE to me. A wasted day, but the fastest way to our destination. We have flown SW Airlines almost exclusively for their low fares, convenient destinations, and their "bags fly free" checked luggage policy. I would like to suggest they charge for all the overhead bin storage! So many travelers try to cram so much over sized baggage into those overhead bins...it slows down the departures and arrivals with those who cram struggling to store and retrieve their baggage. The storage under the seat in front of you...seems to be the easiest way to go...for free! Most people would probably elect to check all those bulky bags... We usually fly 2 to 3 times a year and we usually choose to fly SW Airlines.

When S/W first came to Phila, they had quite a few direct flights to most cities in Florida. Once they bought out AIRTRAN, those flights don't exist any longer. Example they have about 7 or 8 flights to Tampa daily, but only one of those flights is direct, the others either go through Atlanta or Chicago or Nashville making a 2 1/2 hour flight now at least a 4, 5 and in some cases a 6 hour flight. Not very smart when USAIR offers at least 4 or 5 direct flights to Tampa. (and believe it or not USAIR is cheaper on the flight itself. Hopefully Southwest will go back to offering more direct flights from Phila to Florida instead of these long connecting flights.

On my most recent trip from San Diego To Austin, the gate attendant found that someone had used whiteout and covered the last numeral of the date on the Doctor's statement pertaining to my portable oxygen equipment. She informed me that I could only take the equipment as carry-on luggage, and couldn't use it during the flight. I informed the stewardess of this, and she looked at the doctor's statement. At the top of the request it stated that this statement NEVER EXPIRES. The stewardess took the statement to the Captain of the aircraft, and he said if I needed to use oxygen, I should indeed use the equipment, and the stewardess wrote the captains instructions on the statement, and also signed her name and contact information if anyone questioned me during my return flight. Had the gate attendant looked more closely, she would have realized that the statement could never expire, regardless of the date not being complete. A (0) rating for the gate attendant, and a(10) rating for the stewardess and captain.

Southwest has always been straightforward in their practices. What you see is what you get, but the thing I like the most is that the employees actually like working there and they act as if they like working there. As a business traveler, plans sometimes change and it is nice not to have to take a $150 or more hit to change your flight. I saw a few people complaining about no meals. Did they really want Airplane food? Grab something in the terminal that will keep like a nice sandwich and you're all set. People bring food on planes all the time. I like Southwest so much I scrapped another credit card and got theirs to earn even more points.

I've flown with Southwest for over 30 years and generally I like them better than any other airline. Sadly I see a trend toward Southwest losing that friendly feel and becoming a "Big Company" airline. I used to love the fact that their employees would make funny cracks and such (my favorite was a flight attendant quietly saying "I think I can I think can I think I can" during take off and ending with "Whew! I knew I could!" as we lifted off), but hardly any do it now - it's the exception. I miss that because I always felt like their employees enjoyed where they worked. Now it's pretty much the same dull, dry from all of them. No humor. No fun. Few smiles. It's a job to them. This is sad because it was what set Southwest apart from the others. Still, pricing, free bags and the rewards system are great.

At one time I was platinum on Continental and American at the same time but still preferred to fly Southwest. The boarding process may seem strange at first, but it is very organized, it goes quickly, and people in zones 4 and 3 aren't wandering around aimlessly blocking people from zones 1 and 2 from boarding. There are no zones. The order in which you board is determined by the order in which you print your boarding pass, and you can do that 24 hours before departure. The flight attendants don't act like their job gets in the way of other things they'd rather be doing. The only reason I didn't score them 10 is they aren't quite as low priced as they used to be. That seems to have changed after the AirTran acquisition.

There's a saying about location value in the real estate industry that "south west is best" and I am giggling at the idea of using that phrase to describe my experiences with Southwest Airlines. For easy, fun (if travel can be fun!), and efficiency, Southwest IS best and is an affordable option when traveling. My only reason for taking off 1 star is that there are limited non-stop flights, making some short jaunts longer than they need to be. But with that said, the value is in the prices. And frankly, I enjoy the laid back flight attendants who work hard to make us all feel at home.

My experiences on Southwest have been very good. Their prices seem very competitive and I love that you can bring a bag and even change your flight (I know some other airlines are now doing that because of Covid, but I haven't been flying at all since the pandemic). You really feel like you can book a flight with confidence. The only thing I don't like is that you can't pick your seat.... I just don't understand that!

We like to use Southwest Airlines to fly between New Orleans, LA and Phoenix, AZ. When comparing prices, Southwest is usually the lowest. Their website is very easy to use. They do not allow you to pick your seat but do allow early online check in 24 hours before your flight that gets you into an earlier boarding group. They also make it easy to change your reservation easily if your travel plans change. Southwest is an economical alternative for travelers.

IN the last two years I flew with Southwest to Vegas. The first time the flight home was delayed by a glitch of computers. Although it was an inconvience it was handled with courtesy and competence so that the layover was handled to the best of all envolved. Even the fact that my luggage did not make it with me, it was delivered to my door when I returened home. The next time there were no glitches and all was well. I would fly Southwest again as it has the best fairs around.

We live on the other side of the country from our family so we have flown a lot. I don't even bother checking the other airlines anymore. I love that you can change your flight on Southwest without getting hit with major fees, you get two free bags, and I like that we can pick our own seats when we get there. It's a huge plus for me that I can board after the A-group with my kids to make sure we all get seats together. The only thing that I wish is that they had more direct flights to where I want to go, but I guess that's what happens when you're heading off the beaten path a little.

I have never had a bad experience with Southwest Airlines. Always great customer service. Love the no change, no cancel, and no baggage fees. You don't get that with any other airline. My cheapest flights have always been with Southwest too. It is easy to accumulate points and it doesn't take thousands and thousands of points to get a flight. I will continue to be a loyal costumer because they are a great airline to fly with.

Personel and flight were pleasant! We were each allowed a checked bag, as well as our carry-on at no extra charge. We flew with a 1 year old, and everyone was great about helping to make sure he stayed busy or had plenty of water to help with his ears. We did lose the cup holders that belong to the car seat, but we usually remove them when we board and did not this time. They offered to check it with our luggage so that we did not have to carry it through the airport to gate check, so we forgot to remove them. Overall a wonderful experience, with excellent staff!

I flew Southwest to Florida from New Jersey last year and it was a pretty good flight. The flight was delayed an hour, but that was due to terrible weather in New Jersey in November. Can't do anything abut the elements. They did though, work hard to get us there and we only ended up being like an hour late to the airport overall in Florida. I was really happy that they did the best they could and it showed. They were very accommodating and I appreciate that.

Overall our experience with Southwest was good but I do NOT like their boarding procedures. I much prefer getting an assigned seat when you make reservations. My wife and I flew on Southwest and neither time (going or coming home) were we able to get the same section when each of us had to go to a website to get a boarding letter and number. I will say that everyone from Southwest to include the flight attendants were very friendly.

I require extra help due to some issues with mobility, and SW is always very good to help me, especially in getting from one gate to the next on time. I have never had an unpleasant experience with SW that was the responsibility of the airline. In fact, when I was dumped off of another airline, I was able to go over to the SW desk and was on a flight within 45 minutes when the original airline told me that it would be days before I could get a flight on any carrier. SW has never disappointed me.

I have traveled many times on Southwest Airlines and have had very pleasant and professional interaction with all personnel. Recently (June 2015) I had to travel from Tulsa OK to Phoenix AZ and the staff on the airlines were great people, but very humorous. The flight crew have a new dialog during the safety information. Great airlines and still one of the most reasonable. They still don't charge for your first two bags. I travel Southwest if they go to where I need to go.

I have been flying with Southwest for years and can honestly say that they are the most customer oriented airline. Always friendly and they try to be as accommodating as they can. The only negative thing I can say is that they merged with Trans Air. After the merge, prices increased and the amount of direct flights seemed to be cut in half as opposed to flights with layovers. This doesn't stop me from choosing Southwest, it's just an annoyance.

I have been flying on Southwest back and forth to Washington DC or Washington, Dulles since 1996. I have always enjoyed the fights. There has only been one time in all these years that I had to reschedule a flight for the next day to due mechanical problems with the plane. The people who work for Southwest are always very helpful, courteous and friendly. Oh yes, Southwest usually provides affordable air fares, so I can travel. Love the airline and the funny stewards that work the planes. Love the 2 "bags fly free". Only complaint I have is the seats are way, way to small. I have severe back problems, and it's all I can do to make a 3 to 4 hour flight to and back from Chicago without being in severe pain. Can't move or shift. Had to read my newspaper with my elbows to my side. Very hard. But outside of that, a great airline. I don't ever fly anything different. I book everything Southwest and am able to get my favorite "NONSTOP" to where ever I go.

I love Southwest....they are very accommodating. I have health problems & request to sit where I can see the stewardess. I usually carry an ice pack to help. One time I forgot it. I asked the stewardess if....after we were in the air I could get some ice. She did not wait....she created one & brought it to me right then. I am a dedicated customer to Southwest airlines. They have the best frequent flyer program hands down. Their prices are better than competitors. I'm not a big fan of the A-B-C seating system but it works OK. My only complaint is the seats are horrendously uncomfortable. My flights are normally 2 to 3 hours at most. Ok, so lets start with the bad. They don't really allow you to book that weekend getaway (Fri-Sun) or travel on (Fri or Sun) for the cheap fare like they used to. Now the Good. Basically everything else. No bag fees, Lowest fares. More travel times especially if you are a big city. The flight crews are awesome. I used to fly Continental before they merged with United on a SD to NYC (EWR) route for $360 Non-stop. They now want $600 for same flight. SWA is a beautiful $366!! All around SWA gets you there!

Over the last few years my girklfriend and I have flown only Southwest airlines. I have flown many other airlines when I was a little younger. With Southwest we have always found a seat that was comfortable to us.The stewardesses were always friendly and helpful. If we wanted something to drink, or a pillow or blanket they were very happy to get us what we wanted. And always with a smile. We have therefore decided anytime we fly it would be with Southwest airlines. It might be a little more expensive but it is well worth it.

I always fly SW whenever possible. I like the efficient way in which they board. Everyone gets a snack. The flight attendants are always friendly and smiling. Flights are held for the travelers from delayed flights. Our luggage was on time even though our flight had been delayed and we had to run to meet our next flight. I highly recommend SW.

We carry the SW credit card. We earn points by use of the card, yearly, and purchases. Very happy with this airline. Beverages and snacks are served. Staff have always been polite. Passengers are allowed 2 free checked bags and a carry on, you don't see this on many airlines and it is a huge savings. SW has their wanna get a way flights that are the most reasonable I've seen. I truly wish you could fly SW out of Fargo or Grand Forks ND. Would save us approx. a 6 hour drive to the cities.

Here’s what I like about Southwest... It’s one of the few airlines that allows you to cancel flight 10 minutes before boarding and you do not lose the credit of your flight and can use it on a later flight. It feels very egalitarian inside the plane and that there are no special seats everyone finds her own seat and is treated equally. I love the baggage allowance and I know that if I’m paying a very inexpensive flight I don’t have to pay extra for baggage. I definitely like all their new destinations to the Caribbean and some in Central America. I am a new travel companion so I can fly free with my partner. I think they can do better by pricing some flights more competitively. I feel like I can often find a round-trip with another cheaper airline for the cost of one Southwest one-way flight. This is of course with the exception of those really inexpensive low fares they have every now and then. If you have a lot of flexibility in your schedule and are not fixed on going somewhere in particular at a particular time in southwest could be a good option for you. But if you’re pressed to find the cheapest flight for your specific dates then it may not always give you the best price But if you’re pressed to find the cheapest flight for your specific dates then it may not always give you the best price. however I can vouch for the flying experience and that has always been great.

I love to fly with Southwest airlines because they have great discount fares without sacrificing convenience or service. They also have worked to avoid the extra fees charged by other airlines. Seating is still a small issue, because if you forget to check in on time, you're stuck boarding last because of the first come first serve seating--but all in all the price makes this hassle worth it. The flights are always on time, and the staff is very professional and polite. They go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. I even had a flight attendant help hold my baby during a four hour flight to Florida once. She saw her struggling to stay still and walked her up and down the aisle a few times to keep her occupied until she finally fell asleep. These are the kind of personal touches that keep me coming back again and again to Southwest.

I live in Houston and every year for the past 8 years I've been going to Las Vegas. I first started with Southwest Airlines 8 years ago for my Vegas trips and have consistently found Southwest Airlines fares reasonable, and bookings available and I haven't been able to book a flight to Vegas without Southwest Airlines since.

Southwest is a reliable, mostly affordable airline with a lot of flights to choose from. I like Southwest because they don't charge for up to 2 checked bags and you can cancel without a penalty. Sometimes their flights are expensive, but if you have a flexible schedule, you can usually find a flight that is affordable.

Southwest is a great airline to fly with. I love their flexibility, and not feeling nickel and dimed. The only bitter part is not being able to pick your seats beforehand. I currently love flying SW because I have little children so we get to board early. But when they get older, I don't know if I'll stick with SW.

Fares are reasonable when you consider that there are no baggage fees. Employees are generally very friendly and helpful. This is our first choice when we fly. We've taken close to 100 flights on Southwest and only once was there any sort of delay.

Good experience. I fly only twice a year.Southwest has best rates with no extras charged. Any disappointment I have would be with any of the airlines pertaining to the narrow aisles which is ridiculous adding more seating. My first flight was in1969. Big big difference in space and even friendliness of flight attendants.

My sister and I flew to Georgia when we were younger and it was our first time flying ever. The flight attendants and crew was so nice to help us figure out how to get baggage and where to find it. It was also so clean and they kept checking on us to make sure we were doing good!

We chose Southwest Airlines for our Honeymoon because of they had great prices to Baltimore. Our flight attendants were really fun and even sang. Their website is easy to navigate and I like their Low Fare Calendar. It makes it easy to find the best dates for affordable flights. They also offer great options for one-way flights.
