Southwest Airlines is a large US airline headquartered in Dallas, Texas. In fact, it is the world’s largest low-cost carrier. The airline was established in 1967 and adopted the name "Southwest" in 1971. It offers over 4,000 flights a day with 90+ destinations in the US and ten additional countries.

Southwest is one of the largest Boeing operators. In fact, it only operates 737s. Southwest has over 550 737s in service, with each of them getting around six to seven flights per day.

Southwest is not without controversy. Recently, the company got into trouble with the government for offering a quoted rate on its website that was not actually a real fare for any seat on a flight. Also, in July 2014, a customer and his family were asked to leave a flight because he was not allowed to board a flight early as an A-list member. He tweeted his dissatisfaction and was kicked off the flight and told to remove his tweet.

The Good

  • Low Cost
  • Two Bags Checked Free
  • On-Time Flights
  • Amenities and Entertainment

Low Cost

Southwest is a low-cost airline. Ticket prices are some of the lowest on the market. On top of its low prices, Southwest offers many discounts and promotions on their website. The rewards program is also beneficial and easy to use. It is clear to see how to earn a free flight through Southwest. These different promotions and specials available can help ensure that Southwest is the lowest price available for many domestic flights.

Two Bags Checked Free

Southwest has a generous checked baggage allowance—two free checked bags per passenger.

Many other airlines charge for more than one checked bag and some airlines don't allow any free checked baggage at all. This makes Southwest one of the top airlines for checked baggage.

Any checked bags (after the two free) cost $75 per bag.

There are size restrictions for baggage on Southwest Airlines. Bags need to be less than 50lbs and have dimensions (length + weight + height) of 62 inches.

Overweight items (51lbs to 100lbs) and oversized items (63 inches to 80 inches) will also be accepted at a fee of $75 per item.

On-Time Flights

Southwest Airlines has a very high on-time percentage for most of their flights: roughly 85% on-time, 6% late, 2% very late, and 4% excessively late (information according to Flightstats.com). This is higher than a number of other top airlines. However, some of the most-active routes received low ratings. Top flights include:

  • Burbank to Oakland (3.2 stars, 87% on time)
  • Phoenix to San Diego (3.2 stars, 85% on time)
  • Los Angeles to San Jose (3.2 stars 83% on time)

This shows that even top flights are barely receiving three stars. Southwest's lowest-ranked flight is Dallas to Austin, receiving only 1.5 stars and being on-time roughly 70% of the time. Many other top airlines have a large number their most active flights in the four-star range. Compared to this, Southwest does not compare as well as some other top airlines.

Amenities and Entertainment

Southwest offers many of the standard amenities when it comes to in-flight services. As a low-cost airline, some in-flight services are lacking when compared to those that other top airlines provide. Check out some of the airline's in-flight amenities:

  • Entertainment: Southwest allows passengers to use personal devices for their entertainment and provides free live and on-demand television. This includes 19 live channels and up to 75 TV episodes from popular series. There are also more than 25 current movie choices available for purchase on flights. Southwest does not have other means for entertainment besides passengers personal devices. Most other airlines have some sort of screen provided and many more options for media.
  • Food and dining: While a number of the major airlines offer meal options on their flights, this low-cost airline does not. However, complimentary drinks and snacks including pretzels and peanuts are available. Many other low-cost airlines do not offer any complimentary items like this.
  • Wi-Fi: For $8 a day, passengers can access wi-fi services on personal mobile devices to browse the web, check emails, and explore social media sites. This is also how the in-flight entertainment is streamed. This is a very affordable option that not every airline provides. However, not every flight with Southwest offers wi-fi. Passengers can check amenities with flight information on the Southwest website to check if their flight will have wi-fi or not. Flights without wi-fi service do not have other options for entertainment.

The Bad

  • Boarding Process
  • Open Seating Policy
  • Ten Minute Rule
  • Limited Destinations
  • Government Action
  • Limited Aircraft Comforts

Boarding Process

The boarding process on Southwest is slightly different than most other airlines. Instead of having passengers choose a seat with some type of interactive map during purchase or check-in, Southwest does not assign any seats. It gives a group (A, B, or C) and a number (1-60) to assign the order of boarding.

Open Seating Policy

Southwest uses an open seating policy so passengers can sit anywhere that is open once they have boarded the plane. This would make the boarding process less smooth than airlines that assign or let passengers choose seats beforehand.

With an open seating policy, passengers may be confused as to where to go and may run into more problems or potentially take longer to be settled on the plane.

Ten Minute Rule

Passengers are suggested to be ready to board the plane 30 minutes before departure time and must have their boarding pass and be at the gate at least 10 minutes before departure time. If they have not arrived at least 10 minutes before, Southwest will cancel the reserved space and the passenger will not be eligible for the denied boarding compensation.

Limited Destinations

Southwest flies to 90+ different destinations (mainly domestic), although international routes are available to the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America. This is a small number of destinations when compared to other airlines, such as United which flies to 300 different destinations and many more internationally.

Keep in mind that the 90+ served destinations cover most of the United States. For passengers that need to travel domestically, Southwest would most likely be able to serve in their desired destinations.

For passengers who want an airline that is able to take them to both international and domestic destinations, Southwest would most likely not be able to serve them the best. Looking at just the number of destinations, Southwest would be considered a small airline.

Government Action

There is an alert for this company because of a government action which was recently placed against them in 2014. At that time, Southwest advertised $59 flights to certain destinations. However, after an investigation, it was shown that there were no seats available to any destination at that price.

The airline was fined for their deceptive advertising. This false advertising is a red flag for how Southwest has in the past conducted business.

Limited Aircraft Comforts

We also felt like the Boeing-driven fleet reduced some of the comfort creature features for customers. Generally, Airbus planes include bigger and better seats, with more seat pitch and width.

gavel

The Bottom Line

We recommend Southwest wholeheartedly. It is difficult to beat its prices. The Rewards points system is also great. Points don't ever expire, but you have to accrue points or keep your card active for 24 months. There are no blackout dates for your frequent flier points.

Our flight back home was canceled the only options we were given were much later times with multiple layovers. When we called it took 2 and a half hours to speak with a rep who failed to fix the reservation. So, we had to call back a second time and again wait on hold over 2 hours. Then they did not honor the "early bird" we paid for and we got bumped all the way to the back of the line on the new flight. Terrible service, very high likely hood your flight is canceled. Service is horrible. I have no positives about this airline. It is trash. Never fly with them again ....my advice book with a major airline southwest is not worth the headache.

Upon my arrival back to Reagan National Airport in Washington DC I requested a wheelchair excort and the young came on the plane to excort me to the arrival terminal on the way she said where I'm going is too far and she can't take me. She took me outside to the departure terminal and I told her she cannot leave me there and she went and got her supervisor instead of asking me to find out what happened he came out and immediately started yelling3 at me and waving his badge in my face telling me take a picture if I want he is the supervisor. I have multiple sclerosis and can't walk without a crutch and I felt helpless at that moment because the supervisor was telling me they push us in the chair as a courtesy and it's not their job. I have a video of him waving his badge in my face. I went to the airport to report what happened and left my contact information and no one called me to resolve that situation so I decided to make sure I'm never treated that way again I will never fly one any airline alone.

I have tweeted my experience and the social media rep doesn’t even know how to understand and address the issue. I boarded my originating flight quite anxious given I was returning from my fathers funeral. Our agent alerted me to forgetting to consolidate my bags. I asked for her help to hold a coffee so I could put my bag inside my other bag. Her look and rude attitude was completely uncalled for. My apology no smile and horrific service from what was my favorite airline. Checkout my tweet @pattyhager. Your agent couldn’t get reply with a drink coupon. And guess what I fly u again tomorrow! How can u treat loyal passengers in pain like this!

Southwest has been my go to airline for years. In fact, I even have a credit card with the airline.. However, they have only recently failed me. I sat in the B8 terminal waiting with 8 other family members to board our plane to California. Across from me sat an overweight but friendly woman. The two attendants at the ticket counter took turns walking around the metal medium to look at the woman making faces, widening their eyes, and laughing at her. If I felt uncomfortable, I could only imagine how the person who the inappropriate gestures were directed to. There should always be a standard of professionalism and the ability to control inappropriate emotions. Not to mention, one of my bags is lost! I travelled home from college and my family packed carry on bags to help me bring 16 checked bags home from New Orleans. Our party was huge which is why we probably didn't recieve the best customer service but for my bag to be missing with my diploma is so disheartening. I am hoping that my belongings are returned safely and sentimentally valued belongings are taken care of. Of course the material possessions can be replaced but it's still unfortunate that there is a chance I won't see some of my things again.

My luggage was brand new when I took this flight from Sacramento to Burbank California and upon arrival to Burbank my luggage was fine and still looked new except for a scarf the was missing out my luggage. Then from Burbank to Sacramento when I retrieved my luggage in Sacramento my luggage had Big horrible scratches on it and in some places it almost looked like rips. My prescription seeing glasses had so many scratches on them as if someone was playing catch with them and dropped them on several occasions and put them back in the case. I was on a business trip, so if I can help it I will never fly Southwest again.

Round trip from Florida to St. Louis. Short stay so packed the carry on bag and checked it. Carried on a smaller one. Got to Baltimore airport for connecting flights. Got to St. Louis, no bag. The trip was short because I was visiting my dying uncle who might not have made it to the next day. Not only did they not deliver the bag until the next day it was the wrong bag so I didn't receive my clothes till late the 2nd day. On the way back, the vents that are above your head to receive air were all dripping water. No AC. They tried to give us a new plane in St. Louis but none available. Flew back to Baltimore where was not supposed to deplane. However, we deplaned, the passengers on the other plane that was supposed to board our plane had to deplane, and we all had to get on a new plane. Then, we had to wait for the luggage from both of these planes to get to the plane we were on. NEVER have had a decent flight on SW. I require wheelchair assistance and this made the process even worse. The fact that I had a dying uncle was enough.

I flew SW for the first time on Sept 24. I flew with 15 Special Olympic athletes and 3 more coaches to Wichita, Kansas. All of our flights were good except one. Our flight from Wichita to Dallas was terrible! Two of the flight attendents were so rude. One of the ladies was real short with, one of the coaches. Then, I told her she really needed to check her attitude. 10 min. later, the other flight attendent threw a cup of sprite in her bag and spilled all over me! It was all down my arm,on my shirt, and down my leg. She proceeded to keep walking and Itold her, " Excuse me " She turned around and said " Did I splash you?" I said, no, you baptized me with sprite! She never apologized and said she would bring me a napkin. The other lady brought me a towel . I asked her for their names and she told me. Both ladies came to me and finally apologized to me. One lady explained to me that she was in a hurry because she " had to pee like a racehorse" WHAT????????

This was my first time flying and I hope it was the last time. My first flight was delayed three different times , I sat in the airport for almost three hours waiting on my flight. Once I arrived at my destination my luggage was no where to be found . I had to go stand in line at customer service and tell them about my bags. I was told they would contact me once my luggage was found . Later that night since I hadn't heard back from the airline I decided to all customer service . We were leaving to go on a cruise the next day to get married . Half of my wedding accessories and appeal for the wedding were in my bags . I told the customer service rep my concerns about my bags and how I needed to have them by the next morning. I also stressed to her that I had no extra clothes with me and needed my things ASAP. She laughed and said "didn't you wear clothes in the plane? Then you have clothes to wear " she was very rude. Finally about midnight my bags arrived at the hotel . The airline has placed them on the wrong flight . On the way home it as just as bad . Flights delayed again Bc the pilots never showed up? They had to call in back up pilots ! My husband and I were only Able to sit together once on all four flights Bc they gVe us different letter boarding passes . My cousin and her boyfriend also flew with sw and they left from the same airport as we did their flights for delayed all day needless to say they ended up getting a hotel and finally got home the next day!

The last time that I flew, 6/20/2015, my flight from MDW to SMF was unnecessarily delayed by the Captain. He announced after everyone was on board that he thought that there was a fuel shortage problem onboard for the continuing flight to Las Vegas and on to Sacramento . This could have been confirmed by checking in with his superiors, who could have looked up exactly how much fuel was provided initially prior to this portion of the aircraft's "day". Next, he announced that the fuel truck did not have the correct nozzle for this Model of 737. Why was that unclear to those concerned? That took a while to resolve itself. Then, he announced that his onboard fuel indicators did not match his hand-held computer! The last straw was his landing in Las Vegas. This Captain needs to practice his "skills" and develop some pride in LANDING. No wonder your plots have issues on landings in their attempts landing TOO FAST.

Use to be a discount airline and the only air carrier on Long Island. Now no discounts on Long Island at our taxpayer funded airport. I drive to Baltimore(4 hrs.) for my trip to Fa. for the discounted fares. Once my flight was cancelled so they put us on a later flight only to be told their was a up charge because they change the destination in Fa. from Orlando instead of Tampa..After calling and complaining about up charge we were told it was a mistake! on cause we called how many people fell for the up charge. A lot of false advertising on there part with there discounted flights what they fail to tell you it only two seats its easier to fly other discount carriers

4 of the last 5 trips with Southwest have had negative experiences. 1st: plane landed late and they took connecting flight off the board. We found it and told them it was off the board, but gate person said "I didn't do it." We waited on the plane for passengers from other flights. We told the stewardee Iy wasn't on the board, and she said "They're meeting passngers at the gates" We said they hadn't met us, but she just walked away. 2nd Plane. landed late and connection had already boarded. We gave them boarding pass at the gate, but they had already assuned we would miss flight and booked us another trip the next day, even though the plane had not left yet. They finally let us on. 3rd plane: after several hours saying flight was delayed, flight was cancelled. We had to rent a car and drive about 300 miles to get home. 4th plane. No problem. 5th plane: Was going to be late and miss connection. They said they wouldn't hold plane. We were put on a plane to San Antonio, though we were travellingto Austin, We had to rent a car from San Antonio yo Austin.

I must say for the most part that I have had pleasant experiences while flying with Southwest Airlines. But on my recent trip to Ca. on 6/11/15 my niece and I had a layover in Denver, Co at which time our luggage was never transferred from the plane and loaded on the plane to Sacramento, Ca. Once arriving in Sacramento we came to find out that our luggage had never arrived. What a way to start my vacation. I among with several others from our flight were stranded without our luggage. Southwest never called me to say whether or not our luggage had arrived on the next flight. I made a call at 9 PM that night and was told our bags had not arrived. Then I never received any further calls. I woke up at 1:15 Am not being able to sleep worrying as to whether or not I or my niece would have clothes and our belongings that we packed for our vacation. At 1:15 Am I was told our luggage was in Sacramento and would be delivered to us between 7:30Am and 1:30Pm on Friday 6/12/15. Needless to say that when our luggage arrived to the destination of where we were staying my luggage which was a new piece was visibly damaged. I had a tapestry piece that was delivered with a hole in the tapestry and was visibly soiled from oils or grease all over the tapestry. Needless to say I am not at all happy that this piece was ruined and that the lack of care and respect that Southwest took in the handling of one's luggage. One would expect some imperfections, but not to the degree that Southwest handled this piece especially with it being a new piece of luggage that we the customers work hard for. I have filed a complaint with Southwest Airlines for their neglect.

I fly Soufhwest frequently and am part of their Rapid Rewards program. Before they merged with Air Tran, I think they were a 10, but then the frequent delays started happening. This past week, we had family traveling and because of weather, their flight was delayed multiple times an then canceled. This was a Saturday night, and they had no flights available for Sunday or Monday to the original destination or even a close airport, and they made no effort to help find them an alternate flight, nor paid for the difference on last minute air fare that we had to purchase. On top of it all, they left their luggage out in the pouring rain on their tarmac for an hour and a half and everything they owned was soaked through and ruined. Their return flight a week later, was delayed three hours and they didn't get home until 2:30 in the morning. Horrible, horrible experience.

I have only flown once with Southwest and currently have mixed feelings. Although my non-stop from Tampa to Louisville was on time, great crew and easy enough boarding, my flight back to Tampa was a rough experience. I had to drive for two hours to catch my 6:00am flight out of Louisville. That meant leaving at 4:00 EST, but I was on central time so 3:00 am. No notices and everything seemed great until I arrived and checked my bag. My flight had just been cancelled. No real reason was given, just cancelled. They did re-route me with a later flight from Louisville to Baltimore and connection to Tampa. Due to other flights to Tampa being cancelled the night before, the planes were packed tight as a sardine can. Being a bit claustrophobic I try to get a seat in the very front where I don't have to look at all the people. Because I had to be re-routed, I was a high "C" boarding passenger and only center seats were available I thought I was going to cry. The flight left 20 minutes late waiting on the flight crew to arrive from another flight. By this time I had been traveling 8 hours for what should've been a 2 hour trip. 3 hours later I finally got back to Tampa. Rough day to say the least.

I haven't flown Southwest Airlines in years and years and we took a trip a few weeks ago. Our experience was not a good one as our flight was cancelled due to the weather and we ended up getting a flight with a connection to a separate destination where we had to rent a car and drive two hours to get to our final destination which was my family reunion. Even on our connection flight we weren't supposed to change planes but they made us get off the plane and then reboard the same plane. It seems that one hand didn't know what the other was doing. Not a fan and I will avoid Southwest Airlines in the future. What should have been a two hour trip on one flight turned into an eight hour trip on two planes.

On May 30, 2015 I was to fly home to Phoenix, AZ; from Washington, D.C. out of Ronald Reagan Airport. As the time drew near for us to start boarding we were told that the flight was being cancelled due to "traffic control problems" and the only flight out would be the next morning. We were not offered accommodations, meals, vouchers of any kind. We asked several times why we were not being provided with at least a voucher for meals and we were told that "it was out of their control" that the flight was cancelled.' On the shuttle on the way to the hotel we met several people who's American flight had also been cancelled because of bad weather and their hotel was paid for as well as their meals. The next day on our flight out our flight was delayed due to mechanical problems, and we almost missed our connecting flight- nevermind that's another story. To add insult to injury, since my return I have been trying to get documentation from the airlines showing that my flight was cancelled and I had to stay an extra night; I need this information since this was business travel.

My last flight to Nashville as well as the return was quite an experience. I have flown Southwest airlines for years. the only positive thing I can say about the airline is that the fares are still lower. The flight attendants are just not the same as in years past. I am not prejudice against age as I myself am 61. They are very curt, surly, and surely don't provide good service to the passengers. You can hardly hear them as they make their little speech before departing and arriving. I think some of their faces would break into pieces if they even tried to smile. Where are those friendly men and women that used to attend to us in years past. The customer service has just slid down hill. They can't wait to pass out the beverages and snacks so they can run back and sit down and talk among themselves. It appears they really don't care about the quality of their service to us; but just waiting for their paychecks.

I do find that Southwest will provide better rates than most...sometimes. That's probably the only real positive thing I can say. And even that is with some reservation because virtually all theairlines, SWA included are cheating their customers due to the fact that they raised prices due to increasing fuel costs. When fuel took a drastic drop, airfares did not. And then to answer these charges, the airline execs go on the news stating that they are not in the business of providing cheap fares...they are in the business of maximizing profits. Well DUH, all businesses are! But you don't do it by underhanded means. It truly is tantamount to lies and deceit and that pisses me off. The point is, the airfares are not currently legitimate if they were based on fuel costs so shame on SWA and all the others. Toilet paper. We now pay for a double roll at a price that reflects twice the quantity of the single roll, right? Did ANYONE bother to notice that the double roll of today is the same as the single roll of 25 years ago? They paper companies kept slowly reducing the quantity over the years "due to increased costs" but never publicized it. The point is, to call a roll double based on what they now call a single roll is smoke and mirrors. It's basically a single roll at a much increased price. I'm sure some Madison Ave ad exec thought it was a shrewd way to decieve the public to make costs seem palatable. Airlines do this too. In the old days it was ASSUMED that when you travel, you take luggage. I would wager that only a very tiny percentage of people travel with more that their alotted "1 personal item." So, the airlines know right upfront that charging for ANY luggage is totally a racket based on raising the price of flying in the most palatable way they can. And it's NOT pallatable! Everyone hates paying to take their clothes on vacation with them. Thank god for those scant few airlines that actually get this and allow for us to take some stuff. And what's this with charging to check you in at the gate or raising the price of luggage at the gate (ostensibly because they are now paying a human to check you in rather than YOU doing the work online.) I mean, it's a great scam if you can get away with it but it's really robbery. It's like the sticker price on a car...how much is it really by the time you get it out the door? Why can't they be honest and just tell you what it's really gonna cost? It's all about deception because they think a price that LOOKS lower is easier to swallow. IT isn't. Not when you KNOW you're going to be hot with so much more cost. It just looks so bad for car dealers because we know it's phony and deceitful. Same applies to cell phone programs and subscription TV. Advertised price is NOT equal to what you really pay. All in the name of profits. Another thing I really detest about SWA is the seating policy. Now, if I have a seating preference at all, I have to be on the internet at the SWA website at EXACTLY 24 hours before flight time with my finger hovering over the "enter" key and my eyes on the clock. If I am even a couple seconds late, I am relegated to lower boarding status. And why, because I could play the "beat the clock" game and be the first contestant to key in??? And what is up with charging for internet access? Can they really not afford to cover that $8.00 cost (especially since they haven't lowered their prices from the days of the much costlier fuel.)?? Would you not think that they would WANT their passengers to be distracted and immersed in something other than worrying about suicidal pilots, terrorists, storms, ice, and mechanical failures? (Not to mention being crammed into a tiny seat with little incline, wedged between two fat people that should have been made to pay for wider seats or TWO seats. The sad thing is that flying used to be fun and comfortable. Yeah, that was a long time ago. But no airline, not even SWA even has a right to poll people on how they're doing because none of them are doing very well in the common "economy" class, market. It's no different than riding a crappy bus these days...except that the bus seats are more comfortable.

Always flew SOUTHWEST until a ticket taker decided to ask me across the room if I have ever flown with them. I responded yes all the time. I was then asked if I had problems sitting in the seat.....I was then taken on the plane to see if I would actually fit in a seat. I was told I had to purchase another ticket....if the plane wasn't full I could get a refund. Once on the plane I was offered a "Complimentary" drink for my inconvenience. At this point alcohol wasn't going to help me being humiliated in front of other passengers. Not professional at all....if this was an issue, I should have been taken aside and asked this, not across the room at Midway in Chicago......I addressed this with a letter to the company. Shame on you Southwest.....tacky customer service.....

My husband is being deployed next month and when I called Southwest and asked them how much it would be for 5 people to fly from Phoenix to El Paso they quoted me over $4300 AND that was with a layover in Las Vegas. I went online and got a quote of $1300 without a military discount. I messaged Southwest to ask them why it's 3 times more for a military family to fly and there excuse was "because military flights are able to be canceled" now I'm not very familiar with flying but I'm pretty sure all flights can be canceled upon request.

On a recent trip to Newark, we had to take a flight to N.Y. because our flight was delayed. It cost over $350. to get to N.J. on top of that our luggage was lost. That is when we found out SWA doesn't have a scanning system for luggage!!! SWA had no idea where ALL of the passenger's bags were. When we got our bags, in NJ, everyone's luggage was soaking wet. SWA said they would pay for the cleaning, however, the catch was we had to get the report in with in 22 days of the incident. WE WERE NOT BACK FROM OUR TRIP YET! No tracking system for luggage gets SWA a 0 rating.

Or maybe ill just get early bird for me and have a seat saved for the rest of my party and won't have to pay all that money for them.... JUST SAYIN!

In June 2014 I fell in the SW jetway @ Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. airport, breaking my upper arm and tearing my R Rotator cuff. I was in agonizing pain, spent several hours in the E.R., had to fly back to St. Louis the next day and have surgery to repair the arm. I no longer have full use of my arm and still have periods of pain. Not once did S.W. airlines do anything to help me. This experience has surely soured me on using this airline.

every time I've been through Atlanta for a connecting flight my flight i'm on has always been late and then if on time, they change the loading gate on me, so instead of going 3 or 4 spaces over I have a 1/2 mile run to get to my next plane just to find out it was were I was told it would be when landing. they cant get connecting flights together and if offered another plane its about 100 miles futher for my ride to pick me up. after the 4th time I havn't been back on southwest since

I have an unseen disability, Fibromyalgia and Arthritis, and can not stand for long periods of time and also have trouble walking at times. I always get a pre board pass however the last time I flew with Southwest I was denied. I tried to explain but they would not accomodate me. so.....I had to stand in line over 10 minutes...not good for me.....I will never fly with them again.....

We flew to Orlando, Fl May 28, 2015 & returned June 1, 2015. When we reached our destination and picked up our luggage......our large bag was bent so bad that the handle couldn't be moved. I got on their web site and saw that we should've reported it no later than 4 hrs after landing. This is so wrong. That piece of luggage cost us $100 to replace because it was a very large piece. Needless to say both my husband & myself were very upset!

Southwest lies to their customers their delayed flight stories change from the plane to the ticket counter. My wife and 17 year old daughter were stranded at atlanta airport overnight. I was told they wouldn't cover a hotel or even so much as a food voucher they are the skells of the airline industry. You would be better off spending the extra money at a real airline.

Recently completed round-trip FLL-DEN. In general, good experience, BUT: 1) Bulkhead seats extremely cramped 2) Travelling thru 2 time zones, I would have welcomed the opportunity to purchase a sandwich or light meal, rather than having free SNACKS or purchasing a sandwich in the terminal to carry aboard. Crew for the most part very friendly and helpful, with the exception of one rude flight attendant. We did appreciate the 2 free checked bag policy. I am a Rapid Rewards client.

We flew them six times in the past couple of weeks and other than one weather-delay they went and arrived on-time. But regardless of what fare you buy they always board the handicapped......(and those who claim they are, whether they are or not)....first. And those people always take the first row which slows down the rest of the boarding process and make it almost impossible to disembark. It makes he wonder how many passengers would loose their lives if there is ever a fire or emergency? Because of that I seriously doubt if we will ever fly SW again.

Bad experience. BAD! So our pilot shows up. Smelled like a bar (alcohol). Called this to the attention of SW Air staff. Flight was delayed 1-2 hrs until another pilot arrives. Orig. man was hauled off up stairs. Airline NEVER did fess up that pilot was drunk. We just know that this guy DID NOT go along as pilot. Very disturbing! We blow the whistle & SW Air suddenly becomes deaf, dumb & blind to an otherwise obvious problem. Our attorney followed up. Airline responded trite & meaningless. What else?

I was told that my flight was delayed until 5pm... They left without us and ruined my vacation... Flight left at 5:10... Didn't send us anything. Acknowledged the initial flight situation, but very upset with the way they handled flying after that.

I am having to fly Delta from Indianapolis to Birmingham tomorrow to visit my grandchildren because your flight options are so poor. Please improve the quality and quantity of options. Southwest is always my airline of choice.

Southwest Airlines damaged my expensive wheelchair. It obviously was dropped. It is bent and beaten up very badly. Southwest refuses to fix my wheelchair. I paid almost $3,000.00 for it. I am very dissatisfied with Southwest Airlines.

I have never been on a Southwest flight that was on time. They are very disorganized. Our last flight was canceled less than 8hrs before departure. They also spent a 1/2hr looking for a passenger because their numbers were off. Not a good airline. Next time drive.

I had horrible experiences flying from Chicago to Texas going and coming back. The ticket agent stopped serving my wife and I to take care of another customer. I couldn't believe it. It happened going and coming. Obviously, customer service training is much needed. Horrible, I tell you.

Way to long of a story. their policies are terrible and some of the crew members are less than acceptable. They should be unemployed and shouldn't hide behind the fact that they can do and say and act however they want, with no regard to others.

This was my first experience flying Southwest and I'm not quite sure if I will do it again. While the crew was amazing the air conditioning didn't work properly on any of my flights and the WiFi also didn't work. That's a bit uncomfortable when you are on a plane for more than 3 hours.

SW had direct flights from St. Louis to Birmingham, AL that took about 1 hour. Now the flight makes a connection either in Chicago or Houston and takes over 6 hours. They also advertise cheap flights but never has a flight been less than $125 one way. I can drive from St. Louis to Birmingham in about 9 hours and it only cost about $60 in gas.

It was great to have direct flights between St. Louis and Birmingham and it only taking 11/2 hours. Now it takes over 6 hours with stop overs in either Chicago and / or Houston. Those direct flight were always full. Southwest get the hint reinstitute the direct flights between St. Louis and Birmingham.

Southwest used to be a low cost airline with spectacular service. Now their fares are high and often higher than other airlines. Service is so-so, not like the old days. Flying is just not fun anymore.
