CarGurus is an automotive marketplace for car shoppers use to find and compare new or used cars using proprietary technology and innovative data within its search algorithms, whether it's for a car guru with a plan to purchase a dream car or someone looking for great deals on a mediocre used car for college. With more than three million used car listings and over 450,000 listings for new cars, CarGurus provides a wide variety of options for car shoppers.

The automotive research and shopping website was launched in 2006 by Langley Steinert, former co-founder of TripAdvisor, the world's largest online travel site. Today, Car Gurus claims to get more average daily traffic than major competitors AutoTrader™, Cars.com™, KBB.com™ and Edmunds.com™.

The board of directors still includes the founder, Langley Steinert, along with Steve Conine, co-founder and co-chairman of Wayfair. The company recently became a stock option on the Nasdaq under the symbol CARG.

CarGurus.com prides itself on providing unbiased price transparency data to help consumers make smarter and more empowered purchase decisions when shopping for vehicles online.

For every listing, CarGurus shows vehicle data including the time on market, price history, a full local-market price analysis, pertinent information regarding pre-owned vehicles, customer reviews, and car dealers' expert reviews. Also, millions of new, used, and certified pre-owned cars are analyzed by the search engine on the website to rank the best cars available on price savings. If you are looking to find local deals, it'll match you with the best car prices in your area.

Over 15 million visitors per month shop for vehicles online at CarGurus.com.

Compare Prices and Features

CarGurus.com uses mathematical search algorithms to analyze and compare car prices and features on cars for sale. It claims to provide the utmost transparency during the buying and selling process by providing the data and information consumers need to make smart, empowered car purchasing decisions.

To use the auto finder, potential buyers simply type in a zip code and the desired car make and model, and CarGurus shows which vehicle listings to go for and which to avoid for the best local deals.

Whether you are looking for pre-owned vehicles, all-wheel drive, fuel economy, motor trend reviews, or other specs, CarGurus can find the perfect vehicle to fit your needs.

Search Filters

CarGurus' technology search allows users to search by:

  • Price
  • Mileage
  • Body style
  • Dealer or seller radius to a particular zip code
  • Transmission type
  • Trim
  • Days on the market
  • Recent listings
  • Drivetrain type
  • Color
  • Fuel type
  • Engine type
  • Vehicle history
  • Additional options (such as self-driving car, backup camera, utility package, etc.)
  • Sold by a car dealership or individual
  • Photos
  • Fuel economy
  • Price drops.

You can also add similar cars to your search or type in very specific text to help narrow your options.

Question and Answer Board

CarGurus' most unique feature is its question and answer board. This is an online community forum where car buyers can post questions on any auto-related topic. You have to sign in to the website to set up a profile to post a question, but the board is free and open to all visitors.

This is a helpful tool, beyond the search engine features, to help individuals find the latest updates on all things auto-related. The categories include:

  • Shopping and Pricing
  • Maintenance and Repair
  • Car Customization
  • General

This forum provides a prime opportunity to ask questions you would not otherwise be able to ask on the Contact Page of the website because you can receive help beyond car shopping customer service, which you can't always plan on to respond immediately. Users themselves can be resources for one another beyond consumer reviews and share practical, real-world advice without any marketing bias.

Plus, CarGurus staff, who are presumably car guru experts themselves, reply to questions on the forum as well. This feature seems more efficient for both customer and company because chances are your question is not uncommon and being answered publicly can help others as well. It also allows you to keep track of question topics that interest you by "favoriting" them.

Sell Your Car on CarGurus

Something else that resonates with CarGurus users is that the website allows you to sell your car through its site at no cost. Similar to Craigslist, you can post an ad on the platform to be seen by others. This makes the pool to shop from much larger than some other companies with specific seller requirements.

nother difference is that to upload your ad you have to complete a form with the following specifications:

  • Transmission Type
  • Exterior Color
  • Interior Color
  • Car Description
  • Car Photo

This method can definitely be a safer way to sell your car because you know exactly what specs to include instead of just guessing. And posting with a popular site like CarGurus.com gives you some semblance of legitimacy.

Vehicle Pricing Tools

The Cargurus IMV or Instant Market Value is a tool for pricing your car. It is a combination of a recommendation tool and a comparison tool. You can go to the "Sell My Car" page and specify the car, zip, mileage, transmission and options to see suggestions for the most competitive pricing and to determine the value of your car.

To help you determine if a seller is selling the car at a fair price, CarGurus also offers a trade-in value tool that analyzes over 4 million used car listings per day to deliver an accurate estimate of your cars Trade-in and private-sale value. In most cases, CarGurus innovative data analysis is superior to using your own metrics.

Mobile Apps

One final note: This is one of the few websites in its industry that makes its app easy to find and download for iPhone and other Apple products as well as Android. The CarGurus.com app has received solid performance ratings.

The Bad

  • Anyone Can Post a Listing

 Anyone Can Post a Listing

Being able to post your car for free on CarGurus.com is definitely advantageous for the seller; however, buyers should be aware that it may not be as advantageous for them. According to the website, if someone has a car he or she wants to sell, he or she can just post it on the CarGurus site and from there it will be included in the millions of used car listings it provides. All the seller has to do is have the car's color, transmission type and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and photo. Vehicle history information helps, but could in some cases be fabricated.

There doesn't seem to be a system in place to ensure that sellers are legitimate. This may be cause for concern if considering a test drive. When searching the used car listings, individuals should consider whether the car is being sold by an individual seller or a dealership or whether it is certified pre-owned or not.

Car dealerships are likely the safer bet, as they have a vetting process of their own and many car dealerships have already established an affiliate relationship with CarGurus. Through the "Find a Dealer" page, shoppers can find car dealers in their area with the best reputation.

gavel

The Bottom Line

CarGurus has millions of new and certified pre-owned cars to choose from, both from dealerships and individual sellers, and is competitive in the automotive marketplace industry. The company boasts many helpful technology search tools and extensive vehicle data, and users can find some great deals.

What really makes the site worthwhile is the community forum, where you can ask questions on anything car-related or find answers on already posted topics. Finally, CarGurus offers more structure and specifications than a platform like Craigslist.

However, buyers should be aware that there is no vetting process for direct sellers. Some recent CarGurus reviews warn of fraudulent activities from car dealership sellers as well.

Having read their publicity about selling cars more quickly than Auto Trader, I created an add, paid the listing fee and the upgraded $20 priority listing fee. I used the price they suggested. Five buyers contacted me...one with a offer at 40% of the listing, one at 60%, one a general inquiry, two "accepted" the price. In every case, when I wrote back and asked for the funds, they "buyers" disappeared (except the one offering 40% of the list price). On several occasions I wrote to cargurus support for help, about half the questions received responses, generally after a couple of days. Frustrated, I look on line for an alternative and found TRED. You can go to that site for my review (or via google reviews) of that car selling service, which truly exceptional

Buyer beware. After placing my ad I noticed that cargurus had made numerous mistakes that I requested be corrected. I requested that my car main description be changed to show I was offering a Certified 2018 Infiniti Q50 Sport model. The model was eventually changed to reflect it was a Sport model but nothing was ever done to reflect it as being a CPO vehicle. When I started researching deeper I began to notice that dealers with similar vehicles for sale were receiving much better IMV values from cargurus than private sellers were. I ran Kelly Blue Book comparisons and presented them to cargurus and they basically said it cost dealers more to sell a vehicle than private parties so they assigned them a higher rating. When I quit laughing I tried to explain to them a book value is a book value any way you look at it. They refused to change their rating on my car. I told them to cancel my ad immediately because I could not knowingly support a company who so grossly misrepresents what a good deal is by always slanting their ratings towards a dealer and against the public.

BEWARE! When you post on a very seller UNFRIENDLY Cargurus site and you are Not lucky enough to sell your vehicle within a short period of time, a very disturbing 'time clock' is posted on your ad by the Cargurus software. This 'time clock' tracks how long your vehicle has been posted for sale (no matter how many times you try to delete your ad) and is just one of the many 'deterrents' that a potential buyer sees when Cargurus posts your listing and when any potential buyer looks at your vehicle for sale. Unfortunately, if a SELLER has unforeseen health or other issues causing the vehicle to remain listed for a prolonged period of time and unavailable to be shown, the 'time clock' doesn't recognize this and your vehicle gets tagged as a car that has been listed 'forever' and 'undesirable' ... I had a vehicle listed and due to health issues, I was not able to show or sell my car for over 100 days while listed on the site, now I have a permanent 'time clock' showing 'active for 100+ days' and growing! Due to Cargurus keeping the sellers vin # on file indefinitely, this 'time clock' stays constant regardless of whether you delete your ad or not! Obviously, if a buyer doesn't know the sellers circumstances and sees a car listed for several weeks or months, they are going to pass thinking there is something wrong with the vehicle. Cargurus also posts a large warning 'opinion' next to all customer ads stating whether your vehicle is a 'good deal' or 'over priced' deal which is also unfair to the seller. I have a very low mileage vehicle, I listed it at the high end of the selling range and due to Cargurus warning 'opinion', Cargurus unfairly flagged the car as 'OVER PRICED' or 'ABOVE MARKET PRICE' which again, discourages perspective buyers to read further in the ad which would allow the seller to justify their asking price. Another disturbing thing a SELLER has to put up with is if a seller decides to lower the price of their vehicle listed, Cargurus notifies perspective buyers of this action thus indicating that the seller failed to sell their vehicle at a previously advertised price, again drawing attention to the fact that a vehicle maybe list for an lengthy period. Upon calling 'Jordan' at Cargurus customer service, I was told there is nothing he can do regarding my concerns but MOST DISTURBING OF ALL, I was informed by Jordan that due to my Vin # being on file indefinitely with the company, I CANNOT refresh or delete my ad! ...it remains in the Cargurus data bank indefinitely!! ...you can only mark it 'inactive' ...even if you deactivate the ad for a year and decide to repost it, it will then repost 'on the market for 365 days'! Bottom line... This is a BUYER friendly site only that is more interested in gathering your personal information than it is in seller your car! If you are a SELLER, don't waste your time or $$ with Cargurus... there are plenty of other sites to sell your vehicle without these troubling and disturbing seller unfriendly requirements, privacy intrusions, and policies. VERY DISTURBING. AVOID!

Absolute waste of time from a car dealers perspective. Seem only capable of generating email enquiries to try to prove engagement with an audience to dealers of which over 99 % are probably fake or not really genuinely interested in the cars enquired about as never reply to email no matter how courteous and helpful you try to be. By far the biggest waste of time our business faces. The worst platform for dealers we have ever ever tried and are most likely to be closing our account at the end of this month. It is so frustrating also when I have also tested the site as a consumer to enquire about another dealers car, Car gurus waste no time in emailing me another ten dealers simarlar cars in my area. All they seem to care about is getting their visitors to email dealers to pose as interested buyers to try to justify their ad fees. The reality is for dealers people who enquire are left feeling disolutioned confused and spoilt for choice so no surprise they no longer want to engage. Every single dealer I know says the same and think they have now fast become an industry joke in the UK. Also Find the quality of presentation and detail we are allowed to include on our ads is merely a fraction of the UK'S LEADING PLATFORMS AUTO TRADER, MOTORS. CO. UK, AA CARS RAC CARSand the rest. They don't even allow us to offer our best finance rates. Bunch of dinosaurs in my opinion and the worst platform by far for both consumers and dealers alike.

The website is horrible. 95% of the posts state ‘no price available’ ‘coming soon’, etc. Their search engine will NOT match the parameters you set. I did a search for vehicles in a date and price range to look for a TRUCK for my son in college. Out of 3000 matches, almost every single one was just auto dealers misusing this site to post cars that have NOTHING to do with the search parameters set. I reset the parameters 8 times and it kept giving me ‘coming soon’ posts from dealers for CARS, VANS, etc. Don’t waste your time here. They need to overhaul their website. Try one of the other 200 sites that ACTUALLY work. In case Cargurus does actually read these reviews. I ended up buying him a new truck for $28, 995, from one of your competitors. Could have been your sale and commission. Fix your website. I know I can’t be the only one who was unhappy using your site. It does NOT work the way you claimed.

I bought a car from individual through CarGurus, we decided to let them do the title work for us. The seller had an outstanding loan with Ford Credit. So I figured I will be getting a clean title because I was paying off his loan. It took almost a week before they told me to wire transfer my money to them, then they sent it to Ford. Took another week for Ford to clear the loan. Then they have to end the title back to CarGurus to sign because the seller gave them POA. It's been another week for the title to get there and still no clue when this will happen. When they get it they will sign it and overnight it to me. Don't know when this is going to happen. I can't get response from the emails I sent but 2 days or so later. I haven't received a response from last weeks email. I've spent $700 on rentals so far. If I would have kmnown this I would have taken my chances on the seller paying off his loan to get a clean title. WIIL NOT TOUCH CARGURUS AGAIN

The only time the Rep Kristopher D calls is when its time for a dealer review aka Dealer rate hike that they going raise the rates by 30% there only explanation is you getting more leads which consists of misleading customer that dealers finance 3-8000 at 2% rate and get more and more calls Soliciting from other companys how build website or selling insurance. This is how they use factious numbers of leads use against dealers .My sells have dropped over last 2yrs and they still increase every year like clock work. I even emailed Kris D yesterday and have not received a email or call that I requested to talk to Matthew M ..im sure he saw the email .This is how customer service is.Moving on to AUTOTRADER.

I bought a car 2 years ago from a dealer from CarGurus . He changed the battery of the car whenduring I went for the money for the car I chided. Second he said in the moment of the buying that I have to pay a fee for the parking for the car for which I was not notified at the beginning. Then I tried to write a review to that scammer , but it was so complicated. Today I got an email from CarGurus that if I complete a Sergey I will get 10$ gift card for Amazon. At the middle of the survey I was not able to continue. I guess , they just got the necessary information and left me in a position that I can’t continue.

There are a multitude of ways CarGurus hurt's the car industry. First, Cargurus takes dealer listings, republishes them, and rates them w/o consent of the dealer. They may or may not have accurate listing information and can drive customers away without the dealer even knowing the vehicles are being listed. Should a dealer decide to sign up to get control of their listings, they are subjected to a re-sign or die price increase of over 200% or more of the current price annually. This has happened to me 4 years in a row. SO to keep this company from devaluing my listings I have to pay them more every year, ultimately driving the cost up for who??? The consumer. ANother way the hurt the auto industry is they send request for dealership reviews out to everyone who sends a lead through them whether they contact the store or not. This opens the door to negative reviews from people who may not have ever set foot or corresponded with the store. Finally, the customer support is the absolute worse. At this time their support number goes straight to a beep that records you, doesn't even give a prompt. I reported it to my account advocate on 2/12 and it's 2/19 and they haven't even called me back. Today I took a video of what the support calls were doing and sent it to their fb message page. It was viewed but no response.

This website’s review feature cannot be trusted. I found several cars over the years that I have wanted to buy through using them. The first time I decided to make a review of my experience I was denied the ability to do so. Apparently if a customer does not go through cargurus website to contact the seller the customer has not right to place a review. This is insane. Who submits a request to be contacted like this? I have a job. I cannot answer the phone whenever some car salesman happens to check his email and gets around to it. I call directly because if I did not, I would never talk to anyone. How do I know this? I tried it when these features first appeared on these types of websites. I do not know anybody who actually does this, and I think I know why. If a customer cannot place an honest review on a dealership then the review feature is not trustworthy. When I tried to contact cargurus about this issue I was unable to get in touch with anyone through the contact us portal either. To me cargurus = scam site

As an individual car seller, it is very frustrating when I have offers made thru their online system and nothing happens on Cargurus end. According to them "Due to their high volume, they are behind in following up with buyers." So I am not sure if my car is sold or not. I have it on other sites and people looking at it. I basically I have no clue what is going on with my car, if the so called buyers are even real, I do not have any money in have yet I have accepted offers. No one has actually looked at the car so why are they making offers? Seems to be a very sloppy way of doing business. I have not paid Cargurus yet becuase they have not completed a service for me, only a run around.

Symbol CARG for car gurus. This is DORK company. Here is why: 1. Will not allow seller phone number in ad. 2. To post ad: Requires obtaining code#, putting in large letters on paper. Then place on windshield with door open. Take photo inclusive of code#, door open & car grille. Hard to do. 3. Default text in buyer inquiry message box "Still for sale?" results in stupid inquires from those that don't write a message or read ad that tell still available. 4. The UGLY: Disables account based on non-factual info received from jerk users. Fails to properly check validity of false accusations. Messages sent to request reactivation do not get reply within stated 48 hours. user_support@cargurus.com Does not notify user account has been disabled. Can't retrieve car photos or see. Customer service on phone is Bankers Hours 9-5 only Monday-Friday. Dorks that take calls sound like college students out all night before. Can't connect process, remember your answers, keep asking same questions, keep telling user to do what already has been done & told. Repeat same question. Give contradictory answers that do not add up. Unfamiliar with system screens, how to use & find data. Effete core of impudent spoiled snobs in Cambridge, MA. Can't get any action on disabled account. Manager is NEVER available. Any attempt to get accountability results in released call. (HANG UP) Data Integrity Team & CSA are non-customer facing & ineffective. Site goes down for 8+ hours @ time.

Let me pre face this review by saying I DO NOT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH CARGURUS...I have a problem with a dealer advertised by their site. (Brother Auto Sales in Lexington KY) After visiting and purchasing a vehicle at this dealership, what seemed to be a decent experience was quickly turned into a horrifying one. Where my LIFE WAS PUT IN DANGER! I purchased a vehicle from this dealer and was told multiple times the brakes and rotors on the vehicle were brand new. Abdel was sure to make that a selling point! That was important to me being I was going to drive the car about 600-700 miles in a couple of days. During the trip I felt the brakes rumble, but said to myself well they're new this could be nothing. (Keep in mind, I had to travel through the Kentucky and West Virginia mountains on this road trip. (I was very adomite at the dealership that I would be taking this long drive and my safety was a main concern). After reaching my destination, the shaking of the brakes continued followed by other noises. I checked the brakes again and it seemed there were no brakes at all on the vehicle. I called the dealership multiple times regarding the brakes and I've received the run a round as well as excuses such as "the brakes are new we have the receipts from our finance department." A receipt which brothers Auto Sales still hasn't provided. Neither have they called me back the multiple times they have promised to do so. Turns out there were no brakes on the front or back of the vehicle and because of this the rotors needed replacing as well totaling me $500.00 to replace (570.00 if you factor in brake fluid). Let me warn anyone even thinking about purchasing from this dealership to go elsewhere. What type of business selling vehicles would put a person's LIFE in jeopardy by not providing something as simple as new brakes on a vehicle where the selling point was "I just put a NEW brakes on the car" on a vehicle they are selling in Ky knowing this car is headed to N.J. because of that I am disgusted. This will definitely be reported to the Better Business Bureau, and wherever else I can report too as well.

EVERYONE BE WARNED The online car site cargurus is a fraud. I listed a nice 2005 Ford Mustang convertible and today I get an email that says I must prove that I actually own/possess the vehicle by sending them a photo of a piece of paper with some secret number in the windshield of the car. Given that the car is currently 800 miles from where I am, that is not possible. So I know I have pending offers but have no way to respond to them. Sales lost. So, go the website to find a customer contact number - NONE. Find the customer online talk function not working. Finally get a number and explain to the first person the issue. He tells me politely to hold while I connects me with some b$%^&* who coldly tells me that until I follow their verification process there is nothing that can be done. I would not list a roller skate with these people and warn everyone to stay far, far away from this garbage company who has no clue of even basic customer service. FYI: Their BBB rating is a large bold F

Obviously a very liberal owned company do to their PC censoring BS I highly recommend not going on this website or wasting any of your time or hard money on their ads. Try Kelley Blue Book they do the same thing as this website but do it better. When will these stupid companies learn that PC censorship is the way of the past and we're sick and tired of that crap. I am the consumer I am the customer for there I am right don't censor me. Car genius asked me to review Thrifty Car Sales so I gave an honest review they didn't like a few Choice words I used so they took my review down and asked me to change it how dare they are they things that they have the ability to do that. Yeah so you met on the website so what then don't ask me to review something if you don't like what I'm going to say.

We drove over 5 hours to Texas Value Auto with every intention to purchase an advertised Camero. My husband had also called and spoke with Johnathan who "verified" the condition of the Camero and also confirmed that they would "honor" the blue book trade in. We looked up the "rough" condition of our trade in price on blue book; which was $4,132.00 but they said they would only give us $1,500.00 trade in; however, our car was in great mechanical condition and never involved in an accident. When we test drove the Camero, it pulled drastically to the right. Once inspecting car, we noticed two of the wheels were damaged as though it had wrecked against something causing major wheel damage and alignment damage and maybe even frame damage, no way to know. They would only give us $250.00 off price of the Camero to cover price of alignment; however, it was in desperate need of wheels and tires. We were both each out a days work, cost of trailer for towing, motel and meals; fully expecting to come to Dallas to purchase the Camero; only to discover it was falsely advertised and they didn't honor the blue book trade-in price of our Honda Civic SI. We would have taken their unfair trade-in for our car if they would have been fair about the price of the Camero and either repaired or deducted the price to cover repairs for wheels and tires. This company is a fraud and fly-by-night organization. Their good reviews would have to come from employees, as we saw their work in progress first hand. They are not a car dealership but only a rip-you-off "online" sleazy car sales company, do not trust them!!!!

Had all horrible experiences with all the dealers on CarGurus site. Especially EMG auto sales in Avenel NJ. Terrible car dealer! All their cars on CarGurus and other websites are scams. Bait and switch tactics. They have a team of fake sales people that drive people through there doors only to be told that "OH! THAT CAR JUUUUUUUST SOLD 30 SECONDS BEFORE YOU GOT HERE!" We drove 2 hours to get there! Don't waste your time or gas! When I try to leave work bad review on the site I found them on, CarGurus protects the dealer by not allowing me to leave a review! Avoid both CarGurus and EMG auto sales!

*CAR BUYERS BEWARE* Victim of Bushing from Larson Toyota of Tacoma Bushing law RCW 46.70.180 Under the law, car dealers are allowed four working days to find financing and finalize a sale after a buyer has signed a contingent contract. 4(a) Is subject to any conditions or the dealer's or his or her authorized representative's future acceptance, and the dealer fails or refuses within the "bushing" period, which is four calendar days, exclusive of Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, and prior to any further negotiations with said buyer or lessee to inform the buyer or lessee either: (i) That the dealer unconditionally accepts the contract or lease, having satisfied, removed, or waived all conditions to acceptance or performance, including, but not limited to, financing, assignment, or lease approval; or (ii) that the dealer rejects the contract or lease, thereby automatically voiding the contract or lease, as long as such voiding does not negate commercially reasonable contract or lease provisions pertaining to the return of the subject vehicle and any physical damage, excessive mileage after the demand for return of the vehicle, and attorneys' fees authorized by law, and tenders the refund of any initial payment or security made or given by the buyer or lessee, including, but not limited to, any down payment, and tenders return of the trade-in vehicle, key, other trade-in, or certificate of title to a trade-in. Tender may be conditioned on return of the subject vehicle if previously delivered to the buyer or lessee. December 21st, 2017, I had traded in my 2007 Cadillac Escalade ESV in for a 2016 Toyota Camry at Larson Toyota in Tacoma. The deal was for my SUV to be paid off and to purchase the Camry. They said all was good and I left with the Camry. January 6th, 2018, the salesman asked me again for the information needed that I had already given him on December 21st, 2017. (16 days later) By law they have 48 hours or 3 days to contact me to inform me if I was not approved, this is 16 DAYS LATER. So I sent him over copies of what he needed again. After I had sent this over I asked him multiple times if I was going to lose the car and he said to me that I wasn’t and that “it happens all the time” because Larson Toyota knows it will go through so much that they will let you have the car. January 19th, 2018, I got a call from Larson stating that I wasn’t approved for the car and I was instructed to bring back the Camry and to pick up my vehicle. January 21st, 2018, I went in and picked up my Cadillac keys from Matt and left. January 26th, 2018, I got a call around 9:30 am telling me that I was driving THEIR vehicle and I had to come in and sign new paperwork for my own car, which I discovered was paid off the first week of January. After this call I emailed them stating that I would only communicate via email. January 30, 2018, I get a CALL AGAIN from Larson around 4:20 pm telling me that I needed to come in today to discuss the car situation, after I told them not to call me. I told them I was busy and would contact them back. Now remember I had sent them an email stating to ONLY contact me via E-mail and that I would not take phone calls or text messages. I received ANOTHER phone CALL at 5:54pm (same day) I did not answer, and I had received a 2 minute and 46 second voicemail from Mason at 5:57pm. In conclusion its obvious that this dealership dropped the ball again... I’m not the first. A friend had this happen to him also but he had no idea what they were doing was illegal.

The only reason I am giving CarGurus 1 star is because I doubt this website would allow me to post this review without giving a rating. I tried to sell my 1960 Willys CJ5 jeep and ran into constant problems. To verify ownership, I needed to upload a picture of my car with a sign in the windshield that had a certain code. This picture was refused because the sign didn't have "For CarGurus" written on it. I don't understand the logic behind this, but I'm assuming there's none. Nevertheless, I tried again. This time it was refused because the driver's door wasn't open. The car has a military issue canvas top with the doors built into the top. There are no locks on the doors, meaning that a photo with the doors open doesn't prove ownership. I called Customer Service and explained this, but he simply said to send them an email. I sent them an email and after two weeks, I didn't receive a reply. Then I discovered that my listing was deleted. The only conclusion that I can draw from this, is that CarGurus is either staffed by incompetent idiots or apathetic idiots. I can't really tell which, but I have a feeling that it's both.

If you are selling a personal vehicle run as fast as you can from this site, They only have dealer support. I defy you to f8nd a contact method for personal sales. They will take your money but offer you no support. The kicker is after you pay your money, they will wait about two weeks when people are finally responding to your ad and then will shut your ad down for verification. My guess is they don’t want to waste a bit of effort verifying ads unless it’s getting responses. Problem is when they do this, you look like a flake that doesn’t respond so the interested parties go away, I’m assuming this is better for their dealers who don’t have to upload perfectly staged pictures to confirm ownership and then wait days for their listing to be put back up after the buyers go away. I wouldn’t buy from here expecting that CarGurus would help you in any way. Follow their contact us page, it only has information for dealers.

I would not recommend this company to my worst enemy (well maybe my worst ;). They have unscrupulous business practices. We were with CG for years and added a second dealership location to our account in 2016. After less than a year, our incompetent account rep, Coleman, called to inform us that our "contract was up for renewal" for our first dealership location and that the fee would be increasing in 30 days. We informed him that we were consolidating locations in a month and wouldn't need the 2 separate accounts, therefore, closing 1 of the dealership accounts. This is where the shadiness begins: Coleman says that our new dealership account is now up for renewal too and would be increasing. He offered NO good explanation of this increase or why our 2nd location miraculously was up for renewal less than a year later. This was just a mafia-like, bully tactic to get us to pay more, even though our inventory wasn't increasing size! We demanded to speak to a supervisor, but since they likely office out of their living rooms, no one was available to speak to us. We never got a call or email. Now they stopped charging our credit card, and we are no longer on the site even though other dealers' inventory are advertised for free. Again, they are trying to ghost us so we can be pressured into paying double to be back on the site. And let's not mention the "good deal" "great Deal"-joke! Your car with more features will be deemed "overpriced" while a car with a higher trim package but less features misleads a consumer by calling it a "great deal." The truly only reason this website is successful is their ability to appear at the top of the google search page, dominating the vehicle advertising market. In summary, they need a better management structure and PUBLISHED, straight-forward advertisement pricing for dealers-not a hustling scam where they charge dealers different prices for the same packages!

Performance Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, 1130 Auto Mall Drive, Columbus, OH 43228 is a horrible dealership. We drove 5 hours to buy a Truck we saw online. We went on August 13, 2017 Sunday. Never buy from this place. The sales associates Mr. Tyler B was good and patient enough to explain and walk through until test drive of Truck. After that the procedures and answer questions was terrible, horrible. He really does not care about customers. Sale person was full of lies if they promise you anything sure it's documented. Regarding loan financing institution and interest rates are not coordinated with Mr. Nathan H their F & I manager. My issue is when signing the buying papers the deal. When this was communicated to sales department Mr. Tyler B wouldn't listen to me and just kept on communicating with messages to agree his terms and payments, with totally ignoring (8 times) and no replies. Thanks Performance Chrysler for the quality car and the service that was not provided to try to come up with a solution. Mr. Nathan H offered loan with application fee which originated from my routine bank which never charge for any loan fees. Added cost for loan $ 195.00. Sales person promised my license plate going to transfer immediately from my traded car but Mr. Nathen told it’s not possible and charged for temporary Ohio registration fee $ 35.00 and plate transfer fee $ 15.00. My advice, check the car before signing any papers and DO NOT ACCEPT THE CAR BEFORE THEY COMPLETELY provide two car keys and car manual. Sales associates argues that this car do not come with second key. If we need he can provide with additional charge of $ 200.00. If you are looking into dealing with them for as long as you have your vehicle trade in with lowest price from market value. If so check before you finish your paper work, because they just say that to hurry up and make deal. Paying less for traded car and selling same car with 38.05 higher prices. I purchased a "certified pre owned vehicle" from this dealership. It is certified and since it has a perfect Carfax. Big Surprise after driving only 20 miles check engine sign noticed on the dashboard. My son called immediately and left message and text to Mr. Tyler Sales Associates, and explained concerns to him. He told me that the car goes through an extensive inspection to become certified, however, he said might be gas tank cap or dash board electrical concern. Tyler continued to explain that the car was thoroughly inspected. "Tyler, telling us there's nothing he can do for me?" Of course, he said no to resolve repair problem. I let him know that one way or another I'll get my car fixed and that I'll take other measures if he does not wish to make it right, in good will. Only way of getting in touch with them is to walk in. They don't return any phone calls or messages after you purchased a vehicle. STAY AWAY FROM THIS DEALERSHIP. Quality and service are very disappointing. I would not recommend purchasing a car thru this dealership. I would advise to simply shop elsewhere, this dealership obviously can't be trusted.

The dealership reviews on this site are incredibly misleading and shallow. The reviewer/consumer does not even have to make a transaction with the dealership, only an e-mail interaction. Therefore you get a lot of positive reviews like, "nice people" and "responded efficiently to my inquiry." Furthermore, Car Gurus does not allow reviews from consumers that do not use their site. SO if I purchased a car from "Dealer A" by going to their lot or through another site like eBay and have a verified purchase agreement, then I could not post a review on Car Gurus. The result of this shallow review system is that there are dealerships on Car Gurus that have a large amount of positive reviews with little to no sales transactions and basically a lot of dumb reviews. Some great examples to look at are dealerships like Amazing Cars LLC, Car Champs, Ultimate Automobiles (Stafford TX) and Ultimate Motorsports (Houston TX). They have a large collection of positive reviews on Car Gurus but if you did even some basic searching around the internet you would find that those dealerships have a HUGE amount of negative reviews - see review sites like YP, Yelp, etc. As well, those same dealerships advertise many cars for sale through Car Gurus that are not actually available! They are "bait" cars, so they can get inquiries and contacts. I could never trust Car Gurus because of their incomplete and shallow dealer review system and the fact that they allow many shady dealerships to operate through their site.

Bought a car from Bridge Auto Sales in Berlin for $5300. Within 24 hrs the air conditioning, electronic dash module including radio, clock and USB, heated leather seats, and the front fender fell off while I was driving home the day I bought the car. Under body damage and cracks too. Dealership became nasty. Salesperson kept calling and texting me asking me on dates. Found out the air conditioner compressor is bad $900. Worst part?? I paid $295 for tags and title transfer. Dealer said the had to mail both because they needed the title to go get the tags for me. Today my temp tags expire and the dealer DOES NOT HAVE MY TITLE!! When I call Bridge Auto Sales they say the title has a prior lien on it so they can't send it to me. I paid cash for the car and I need the title! This car was a birthday gift for my 17 year old son. His birthday was May 19th. I'm very upset.

Their SEARCH is a JOKE! Total waste of time, it's the worst site to search for what I'm looking for EVER. I'm a buyer, not a seller. Their Good Deal, Fair Deal, High Price rating system is a complete and utter failure, it's a joke, REMOVE IT! I don't even pay attention to it, that only works for stupid buyers. Many times the really great deals will have Fair Deal or even High Price and the one's marked as Good Deals are NOT a good deal at all. You can not use this system at all because there are too many variables, some vehicle models will be a terrible deal -$1500 below book, while others will be a Great deal at +$1500 Above book. Cargurus Rating system for pricing DOES NOT WORK, it's just a distraction. The worst part though is their lousy search, which does not filter correctly, does not hold any settings, every click I have to re-enter every detail all over again every time I make a search! AutoTrader is much better.

I am the owner of a high end car dealership that sells used car from $40000-$120000 and my web service software company sends all my inventory to various sites such as carguru or carigs list, back page, Edmunds. carfax. true cars etc. My inventory is posted on car guru for some time and have min results. Their salesman called and offer me a free dealer account trial and frankly showed no difference in result after 30 days with their paid account as oppose to their free listing as they build their reputation as the place to find cars by basically grabbing any and all post from other sites. However Once you agree to pay them for a better positioning, contact ease etc, the up sell came within 30 min trying to ask for even more money for premium positioning. That left a real bad taste as any business with a good product doesn't need to hammer away the minute you got a live one. But I decided to give it a try and continue to use them for about 5 months so that my judgement will be based on adequate data. During this time, almost every queryt I receive was a internet browser with no intent to buy, of every 10 email that I get, usually after follow up, NONE return calls or reply email. Maybe one out of 50 does result in contact but usually of very low caliber buyer with bottom fishing price target or impossible credit. So after a fair amount of time, we decided that this site really brings us more time waster than actual lead. Compare to other sites we are still actively involved in at similar or higher cost, the net sales vs email/phone call ratio is 100 to 1 compare to carguru in effectiveness. Then came the insult, when we stopped paying them, they actually went out of their way to remove all of our cars even though they use to list it for free before we signed up for a paid dealer account. So the moral of the story is, NEVER PAY THEM as you are better off that way, cause once you pay them, they actually punish you for stopping it. Very odd way of doing business and frankly it doesn't matter as we do fine with the large amount of call by real shopper on autotrader, ebay, true cars etc .

Do not recomand this website I am very upset with CARGURUS methods. First off, every listing shows the number of days a car is listed. This is not necessarily the number of day I have had the car advertised. If another dealer had the car for 200 days and I purchased it and advertised it on CARGURUS for 30 days it would show the car on the market for 230 days. This gives the impression I have had the vehicle for 230 days. Potential buyers would in most cases conclude there must be something wrong with this car if it has not sold in that time frame. There is no good reason a customer needs to know how long a car has been on the market. A purchase should be based on the value of the vehicle which should take into consideration, overall condition, mileage, price and vehicle history, not how many days it has been on the market. This can and will discourage someone from even looking at an otherwise great vehicle.

This has to be one of the worst experiances. With their sales department I have ever had. Rude and not willing to work with dealers unless they sign a long term contract. I have been in Business for 37 years. Some kid sitting at a desk is not going to know anything about my Business. While he is sitting in Massachusetts and Im in Iowa. I would suggest a less expensive site. My current site gave me 2300 leads last year. Carguru said tbey can get me 62 leads a month...I'm spending 99 bucks a month now why would I sign a long term contract for a lot more Money? We will spend are money elsewhere and I hope orhet dealers do also! Currently I spend 400 a month on Advertising and sell 55 a month......Take that Mr. GURU ! Or the Owner Langley S!

Upon seeing an interesting car on Car Gurus and providing my contact information. A dealer contacted me via email and telephone. I made an appointment to see the car. Following a test drive, the dealer (Honda of Fort Myers, FL) representative said they do not deal with Car Gurus and had no knowledge of the offer presented on the Car Gurus website. They refuse to offer the car at the promoted price. I wasted my time and gas, driving about 100 miles to find out it was apparently a false offer. Has anybody else experienced a similar issue with Car Gurus? If enough people have, would you be interested in class-action lawsuit?

30 years in the business and I have never seen a company try to do what these people do. First they send my accounts payable person and increase from $900 a month to $1800 a month and ask for payment. Never contacted me, the dealer, to tell me they were raising my rates. Fortunately my girl in the office knew not to pay the increase without sending them to me. They then tried to jack the rates up at my other store the same week. I told them I was not interested. They then started trying to negotiate the rate. Thats fine but they out and out lied about the conversations that were had. 2 different reps telling lies and different stories. Denied saying what they absolutely said. Could not do basic math and understand the numbers they were quoting. I asked to speak to a supervisor and was told he would have to call me back. He did call the next day. I returned call and left message and never got call back. All I can say is they are bogus in the way they price and have no concern for customer service.

Awful customer service, talked to Chris the branch manager at the (407) location and he was an outright jerk. I told him that one of their dealers denied me an application and told me I would be wasting their time, and huffed and puffed at every question I had, and was a dick on the phone. He also told me that I was easily offended? I was literally just talked calmly not even mad just leaving a review with him, and he said that...Really? That's how you treat potential buyers? Had nothing to do with being offended, but the fact that the BRANCH manager was also a dick just proved to me I'll never buy a car there.

While this may be a good site for a buyers interest this is no site for a purchase of a car from a private party BUYER or SELLER! when trying to sell a vehicle they don't always share the information with the buyer you may have a very interested person but can not contact them direct and other times they will not even post your reply back to the buyer. As a buyer you can,t directly contact the seller or even get their name and many times the seller does not get your interest request and to make matters worse you start getting emails and calls from dealers wanting to sell you their car. It seems this site is only interested in dealer sales and gives false hope for private party sellers and buyers. Upon contact with this company multiple times i received no response on this issue. .

This is the worst and most unethical company that takes your money to post your leads and then steels your leads and redirect them to sell them to other dealers under the flag of helping the buyer. They send the buyer email to one dealer and the buyer phone number to another dealer. Do not use them or you will loose all the leads your leads generate to other dealers. After I cancelled my account with CarGurus a year ago. They are still using my dealership name showing no inventory without authorization. Very unethical.

Wasted my time on three different occasions. The two corvettes and one Mustang GT were fictional. I received robot replies for all three and was given phone numbers that stated texting only. Turned out none of the dealerships had these vehicles in their stock and the pictures all looked surprisingly similar and I suspect taken at the same location. Never again!!!

Someone from this company is texting fake purchase interest and bogus offers to unsuspecting private car sellers. This is a similar tactic to a fake review, but with real financial consequences. A fake offer, which never acknowledged a response with seconds of sending, caused me to put a hold on a purchase document exchange which cost me a real sale. Cargurus is extremely deceptive in this manner to private sellers. In spite of all my correspondence, there has been no response to any of my complaints directly.

When I was searching for automobiles, i searched for only the Good Deals. I learned my lesson before going to dealership, verify price and mileage. On 2 occassions the mileage was incorrect, with it being much higher. The response from both dealerships was typo. Then, i started calling and verifying information. On several more occassions typos. They are making intended typos so the cars read Good Deal. Then once your there, they hope you will be in love with car. Will not recommend any Good Deal from CarGurus.

I bought a truck based on a "Great Deal" listing on CarGurus and the info on the truck was all lies. It said the truck had 200,000 mls and it really had 300,000 mls, which I did not discover until after I bought the truck. The transmission is burned up and has to be replaced, even though the dealer claimed it had already been replaced. The dealer blames the misinformation on Car Gurus and will not in any way remedy the situation.

I agreed to purchase a used car from a seller on CarGurus. I signed the purchase agreement with the seller and he did as well. Worst company to deal with. First, they want to be your partner selling your car. Most of their leads are bogus and not to be found. As a car dealership, they will never give a proper word, honest agreement. They are always after your money to charge as much as they can. Do not sign with them any long term contract as they do not have a set up fees. Every rep can 'grab' money from you as much as possible to increase their commission. On top of that, you will get the worse customer service

Not sure where or how CarGurus determines the value of the cars they advertise, but the values are extremely inflated. The values do not correspond to the NADA retail book values or the Kelly Blue Book retail values. Don’t be fooled into thinking you’re getting a great deal based on their inflated values. Check the NADA book or Kelly Blue Book values.

Two major issues with the site. 1. The lowest price vehicle in the searches are never available, pretty sure its a bait and switch tactic the sellers are using. Also when I tried to leave reviews about the sellers it felt was a negative experience the site would not post them. There are no deals to be found here. Try another search tool and save yourself the aggravation.

Besides the websites terrible UX, their practice of not allowing reviews unless there was a message from the dealer is absolutely nonsense. I can prove that I purchased a car from a specific dealer and Car Gurus is obviously only concerned with the dealer relationship. Please do yourself a favor and avoid this site. The reviews are not thorough. Customer service was dismissive and unhelpful.
