Avis was founded by Warren Avis in 1946 at Willow Run Airport in Detroit with an $85,000 investment. Shortly after, Avis opened a location at the Miami International Airport. After years of varying acquisitions and mergers, the car rental company has expanded to Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. They have also launched an Avis car rental app.

The Good

  • Rental Car Variety
  • Luxury Price Range
  • 50 States Available
  • Airport Locations
  • Instant Return
  • Toll Prepay Option
  • Loyalty Program

Economy Price Range

Avis offers low to average prices for their car rentals. Avis also has a wide variety of vehicles. They have moving vans, which are not always available at other rental companies, as well as pickups, which may be even less common. While these are not available at every Avis location, they can be found at several locations. This offers renters a wider range of vehicles to choose from than the average rental car company. With several models to choose from, you are likely to find a rental that fits your budget.

Avis also uses many environmentally-friendly vehicles in its fleet. Most of its smaller vehicles are SmartWay certified and do minimal harm to the environment. All of their vehicles are 100 percent smoke-free in the U.S. and Canada, so smokers who want to smoke in their rental car will have to try another company.

Luxury Price Range

If you're looking to rent a luxury car, Avis offers low to average prices in the car rental industry. Many popular rental car brands out there do not offer luxury rentals, making Avis more advantageous to luxury car renters. Although there are a few companies that offer lower rates, Avis' daily rates are pretty average for luxury cars in the industry.

Avis also has a special series of vehicles called "Signature Series" cars, which provide renters with a more exotic, luxurious experience. In this collection of cars, renters can choose from Mercedes, BMWs, Maseratis, Corvettes, or a variety of other exciting vehicles.

50 States Available

Avis stands far above the competition with locations in all 50 states. Most companies have locations in an average of 23 states. Knowing there is an Avis in your destination airport or city makes formulating travel plans in advance much easier.

Airport Locations

With rental counters at most major airports throughout the United States and North America, Avis is much more accessible to travelers than its competitors. If you need a car rental from an airport location, an Avis location most likely will be there once you check out your luggage.

Instant Return

Avis has streamlined the rental return process so that renters can return their vehicles in as little as one minute using a kiosk instead of using the Avis counter. This reduces stress for busy travelers and ensures that renters trying to catch a flight won't be caught arriving late because of their rental returns.

Toll Prepay Option

Avis offers a toll prepay option called e-Toll, an electronic toll collection program that makes road travel more convenient. Avis e-Toll cannot be reserved in advance, but it is already conveniently installed in many cars, so it doesn't need to be ordered through their website. When you're making an online reservation, it allows you to check the box if you want to include this as an add-on service when paying for your reservation online.

The thing to know about e-Toll is that you are automatically enrolled in the service if you choose to not pay cash for tolls. This has led to customer issues. Those who were not aware of this found additional charges to their credit/debit card later on. Under the e-Toll program, once you pass through an electronic toll, you will pay a convenience fee of $3.95 for each day of the entire rental period, including any days on which e-Toll is not used, up to a maximum of $19.75 per rental month.

Loyalty Program

Avis Preferred is a revenue-based loyalty program. The rewards program is free to join and offers points for the money you spend with Avis. As an Avis Preferred Member, you can redeem points to rent a car or purchase accessories and upgrades for your rentals.

The Bad

  • Strict Cancellation Policy
  • Roadside Assistance Expenses
  • No On-Site Fuel Discount
  • No Online Check-In

Strict Cancellation Policy

Avis charges $25 if you cancel within six hours before the rental period. After six hours, the cancellation fee increases to a no-show fee of $100, but the rest of the rental is refunded. The refund makes this a slightly better policy than some rental companies which will charge late cancellation fees for as much as 24 hours before the rental period with no refund. However, many companies have less strict cancellation policies and often do not require a cancellation fee.

Roadside Assistance Expenses

In case your rental vehicle has problems, Avis offers extended roadside assistance for $7.49 per day. This is slightly higher than the typical rental company who charges an average of $5-6 per day, but it is a good safety measure to take nonetheless.

No On-Site Fuel Discount

Avis offers several fuel plans, but on-site fuel discounts are not advertised. Avis car rental customers are either expected to bring the car back with a full tank or choose between fueling payment plan options.

No Online Check-In

Although Avis's return process is streamlined, their check-in process is not. This would not typically be a notable disadvantage, since in-person check-in is standard in the car rental industry. However, being a global brand that has been in business for over 70 years, one would think they would have innovated a feature allowing customers to check-in from the website instead of the rental counter.

While returning an Avis rental can be very quick, many customers report that they had to stand in very long lines when picking up their vehicle. Some stood in line for a couple of hours at certain locations and noted that the employees at the counter seemed to lack a sense of urgency.

When they arrived at the counter, employees tried to sell them insurance and upgrades, taking even longer. For travelers getting off of a long flight, hurrying to a meeting, or anxious to begin their vacation, this kind of wait is not desirable.

gavel

The Bottom Line

Avis is a big rental company and a recognized brand name with a lot of options, and it is available almost anywhere you travel. While Avis has the advantage of offering perks for loyal customers, they do have some issues such as their strict cancellation policies and some negative customer feedback. If you're a smoker, Avis is not the option for you, since all cars are 100 percent smoke-free. If you're a local resident, Avis is a prime option due to the company's non-airport locations. And if renting environment-friendly cars is important to you, Avis also offers cars that fit that criteria. We recommend considering Avis as an option when searching for a car rental company.

I rented the car in France over the holidays No inspection documents where filled at pick-up even though I pointed out the small chip. I was told to call "if the chip was getting bigger". It didn't.  Upon return, on January 18th at the Roissy CDG location, nobody was even in the lot to check the vehicle back in and even less inspect it. I waited 15 minutes and finally went into the office where I was asked to "just drop the key off". The next day I receive a note about the "damage" and a charge of 568.28 Euro to fix that small chip and was told that since I "have no proof of what I have been told" I had to pay for it. I really feel I am being taken advantage of for Avis to get this fixed at my expense. Whatever I was told at pick up and return can not be trusted. Being a long time Avis client both in France and in the US, personally as well as my sales team, I find this really disturbing. Is that how they "try harder" !?!?

@Avis - if you're reading this - Shame on you Avis for trying to scam me of $450 for “EXCESSIVE GARBAGE” upon my rental return on 2/1/22 at Miami International Airport! I have been researching this and it appears that this is a common AVIS deceptive practice or trying to defraud your customers with these fictitious and overpriced fees! $450 is way more than my entire rental was!! Plus, I reviewed the pictures and it is nothing more than the typical return from a weekly family vacation with kids. I have rented from countless other rental car companies in the past and never once have been charged this fee! I also showed the AVIS car rental return representative the inside of the car and she confirmed that this is nothing more than the typical minivan rental return with kids. Plus, I was charged $48.36 for gas upon my rental return, when I filled up the car right before I returned it at the Shell Oil gas station in Miami, FL for $70.62, which is on my credit card statement. The Avis return agent had confirmed that the car had a full gas tank upon return and mentioned that the reading the car was giving wasn't fully updated/registered because I had just filled up the rental car. Also, my rental had low washer fluid, which is needed in Miami, FL due to the heat, sand and wind and have pictures of this. Plus, my smart key had a low battery warning, which caused me not to be able to START THE CAR MULTIPLE TIMES during the rental. I called several times to report this and have the call records to provide it, but Avis never returned my call and the Avis representative was extremely unhelpful. I could not return to the airport since it was a drive away and we were following a strict schedule. I rent many cars throughout the year for myself and my sales executives and quite concerned of AVIS’ deceptive and fraudulent practices. I will be sure to spread the word to family and friends, and coworkers to run in the opposite direction if considering renting from Avis. I DID NOT receive what I paid for with AVIS rent a car and demand that this $450 for “EXCESSIVE GARBAGE” and the incorrect $48.36 charge be immediately credited back to my credit card! Worth mentioning is that I am an AVIS Preferred Plus Member and have not been treated as I would expect. My Rental Agreement Number is 286653931 and my Case Number is 45210217. I expect a prompt and courteous response and will accept nothing less than a full credit of the above charges.

Avis is an unethical and dishonest company. 64 y old wife made a reservation for Philadelphia (confirmed and not same day reservation). Upon arriving from Florida for funeral for her father, went to pick up location and was told they have no cars. Stranded, at pickup location they said nothing they could do to assist - they have no cars. AGAIN THERE WAS NO ASSISTANCE NOR HELP PROVIDED OR OFFERED. COMPLETELY ABANDONED BY AVIS This should NEVER happen to any traveler. AVIS, willing to strand a customer in a strange city should NEVER be a consideration for rentals. We did call AVIS customer service (Philippines initially then US upon complaining) who advise Avis policy is to take reservations without confirming pick up location availability. Was told that customer service representatives do not have the ability to check location inventories. YES AVIS POLICY ALLOWS THEIR TAKING AND CONFIRMING YOUR RESERVATION WITHOUT KNOWING VEHICLE AVAILABILITY --

Rented a car form Avis for 6 hours to drive from Miami to Orlando Christmas Eve (about a 4-hour drive). We received the car later than the 10am pick up because of Avis. Then arrived in Orlando before the drop off time to find that the location closed early. We waited for 45 min then were on the phone for another 45 trying to get help. There was no drop box and the only solution we were offered was to drive another 30 min out of the way to drop off the car. This would have added at least another hour dealing with this and we were already going to be late to the event we were to attend. We advised that we were on a schedule, and it was not possible to take the car to that location. The supervisor was of no help and said she would escalate to a manager who would call us back. We never got a call back. We retuned the car to the location when it reopened 2 days later. They charged us over $300 more in addition to our original cost. We called customer service again and they admitted it was their fault but refused to remove the charges. They said they would reduce it 25%, we said no, so they offered to reduce it 50%. When you admit it is your fault then you should take not 25% or 50% but 100% responsibility and reduce this to our original charge. Total charges for 6 hours $478. I could have taken an Uber for $303.69

I attempted to rent a car from Avis and the location provided was not accurate. I called to find the location but the number for Avis rang with no answer. I called to cancel the reservation but again, there was no answer. I also googled the location and the number and all I could find was the same number I had been calling. After at least half a dozen calls, I cancelled through my company website where I had originally booked. Several weeks later, AVIS contacted me asking to return the car (which I never rented). I explained the situation and not long afterward a charge of over $1,200 appeared on my credit card statement. I went through the lengthy, painful process of appealing with the onus on me to prove I had not rented the car (since they did not bother to check any record of pick up). After many months duration and many hours on the phone, the charges were finally reversed and credited back. Then I had a business trip to Baltimore where I had rented a car from Budget. I arrived to find that I was on a 'no rent' list and they would not rent to me. Avis had never informed me of this and as a result, I was stranded in Baltimore (with other companies also sold out). I've now been trying to get removed from the 'do not rent' list but getting little response except for one 'snooty' one. Avis has been a nightmare to work with, wasted much of my time requiring multiple calls and waiting on hold, and stranded me in a city causing additional costs and headache. My standards are not that high but these guys suuuuuuuuuuck!

This is one of the lesser quality rental places I have used. The building I used was dirty. There was trash laying around the counter area in view of customers and no attendants in the front to wait on me. I waited around about 3 minutes before anyone came to the front to acknowledge my presence. When the sales clerk finally came to the counter, he acted like I was an inconvenience to him and interrupting his day. I certainly didn't feel welcomed. The car I received was fine, however the customer service was so bad, I have not been back to Avis since. Why pay the same prices for crappy customer service when you can get great service practically next door for the same price!

HORRIBLE !! IF YOU DONT HAVE GOOD CREDIT DONT PRE PAY FOR YOUR CAR RENTAL., I prepaid $800 to rent the car for 7 days. And I get to the location to pick it up they checked my credit and said I couldn't rent the car. Although they had already taken the $800 out of my bank. I then asked what to do about it the guy at the company counter I said I can't help you with that. Call customer service well it's now been 3 weeks and I'm still out $800!!!!!!!!. Funny how my credit was not good enough but my $800 sure was!!! BEWARE PLEASE! I rented the car because my car is in the shop. Now being out an extra $800 it sure would be nice to have that to pay to get my car out and have a car thanks Avis for nothing!!!!!!!!

After a wonderful initial experience with Avis, we are completely disappointed with their customer service and additional fees. We were charged an added fee for insurance we did not ask for. The customer service representative was incredibly rude when we disputed it by phone. Then two weeks later, we received notice that we were charged $450 for a heavy smoke smell. This is impossible. My husband and I are not smokers and have never touched cigarettes or anything like it. The photos they provided as evidence are ludicrous, considering they were taken long after we returned the car. I am not sure what happened between the time the car was returned and inspected as clean, but it seems as though they looked for a way to charge us additional money simply because they could. I am highly disappointed and will not be renting from Avis again.

HORRIBLE customer service. Their circular phone tree makes it near-impossible to speak to a human being. I rented from Houston Hobby, and accidentally left my GPS on the seat in the vehicle. After multiple calls to their Lost & Found robots, I filed a claim. Their website shows that Houston Hobby has had no items (none? not one?) found in vehicles in the past 60 days. (A quick check of Houston Bush shows 7 pages of recovered items for the same time period.) After finally getting through to a human, Brian in customer said "you'll need to wait 30-90 days to see if we found anything in your vehicle"... I am suggesting our Fortune 100 company to switch go back to Enterprise.

Hello. I would like to let to let you know about the issues I experienced with my recent car rental. When we went to pick the car up, I was told that the vehicle I had reserved two months in advance was not available. When I was upset about this and said I had reserved it, I was informed that they don't reserve a specific vehicle and too many people had rented cars. The desk staff were rude about it and would only offer a smaller rental car that wouldn't hold our family. They also informed me that we had brought too much luggage. We finally took the smaller car to get to our lodgings since it was almost 1am, we had been trying to get this taken car of since 11pm. We had to return it the next day since it was too small for all of us. It also had a flat tire. They still could not offer us the vehicle size that I had reserved because they said it was "reserved for another customer". so we had to rent another car through Hertz. At that time they assured me that I would be given a refund for the rental (minus one day's fee for the less than 12 hours that we had the smaller car), but I would have to call the 800 number to receive the refund. I have spent 4 and a half hours on calls to the 800 number, been hung up on 3 times, I have been told that I would not receive the refund then assured that I would be given my refund of $815.42 and that it would be returned to my account within 3 to 5 business days. That was 11 days ago. I called again today and the representative said I just need to be patient and wait a few more days then call back again if I haven't received the refund. At this point I was hung up on again. I would very much like to resolve this. This has been the worst customer service experience I have ever had. Now at this point it has been 24 days. Someone refunded us $561.59 because she said we had already been refunded $250, we had not. So after 24 days and countless hours on the phone and being hung up on and told to wait. Avis still owes us $253.83. They have the worst customer service I have ever encountered. I will never rent from them again and I will tell everyone I know, as will my husband and family, not to rent from them. This was all on a family vacation to Florida for 11 days. We had 6 people in our immediate party and they would only give us a vehicle for 5 even though I rented a vehicle that held 6. HORRIBLE SERVICE, DISHONEST!!!

Non-existant customer service, will be using other rental companies like Hertz in future. I visited Lisbon and rented vehicles three times in 2 months. Things at the airport rental desk were fine the first time. The second, the assistant wouldn't accept my credit card, believing that the bank "wasn't a real bank" I eventually spoke to a manager who indicated that the card was accepted. The third trip, they booked a different class car for me, printed the booking and manually changed it before asking me to sign (very unprofessional) The rental amount was taken off my credit card and I downloaded the e-receipt for each for the three trips. Then, after this, suddenly another three charges to my credit card occurred over a 3 week period. I tried to find out what these charges were for but head office (USA) couldn't tell me, they said that they would send a message to the local branch to get back to me, a month later and I haven't heard anything. I tried to contact the local branch and sat on hold for over 20 minutes a number of times but couldn't get through to speak to anybody. I have sent two emails and still haven't heard anything back. All I want to know is what the charges are for and get a receipt.

Picking up the car there was no comment about lack of cash option for PA tolls, trying to get through the phone tree idling in front of toll booth only to get someone who was not able to answer my question and could hear the papers shuffling as she researched it. Newer car and no problems during the trip, I tried calling to find out about tolls and even opened EZ-Pass account to pay to no avail. Upon drop-off, snide gal tells me "use the drop-box" and unable to have question answered. Coming into the airport the following morning (had to stay overnight at Pitt Hyatt), I encountered Desiree. She seemed nice enough at first, I even commented it must be hard for her to keep her voice having to yell through mask & shield. I let her know about a late charge added to my receipt, she printed a copy to review together (gave me a copy). In remarking as to the toll issue as well, "well she must have put today as check-in." I told her I was not able to speak with a human being and directed to use the drop-box, that I stayed in the hotel overnight and have a receipt to prove the car was returned last night (even took a picture of the plate for the PA tolls, EZ-Pass account). "Well I'm just telling you what she did." How is that a way to respond to a customer, instead of understanding the issue she simply escalated a scenario where I was not raising my voice nor using profanity. "You don't need to talk to me like that," like what? I told her she didn't need to have a power trip with me, now I could see why the person before me had to spend so much time with her (other rep at counter took care of 2 people during this time). She demanded the receipt to be returned, she yelled at me when I took her pic. I will definitely let Costco know my concerns. I understand limited staff and customer service will be sub-par for a while post-pandemic, "out of character" per manager Shannon and maybe just a bad day. I don't know nor care about her day, customer service is NOT Desiree's strength!

Rented a car drove 2 hours to Wilkes-Barre, PA and got a flat tire. I looked for a spare but it had been removed. This should be checked by AVIS prior to rentals as a safety precaution. At 7:30pm is when the flat occurred, it took 7 calls to get through a busy tone with AVIS's 1800 number but once I got through they sent a ticket from AVIS to roadside service for a 2-way tow. The vehicle to replace mine was in Newark, NJ (196 miles away). The 2-way tow would take 4 to 6 hours amd would start at 8:30pm (so expected at 12:30 - 2:30am). At 10pm I called Roadside to get a quick update (on hold for 40 minutes) and they answered and let me know they had not started on my ticket. It would now be 5 to 7 hours from 10:45pm. I had a flight the next morning 2 hours away so this was no longer going to work. Note I was in an abandoned parking lot with moderate to high crime. I asked if we could change the tow from 2 way to a 1 way tow and take a Lyft to Philadelphia to make my flight. The AVIS representative (Corey) told me to take my keys with me so the car doesn't get stolen she stated that I could drop them off at any AVIS in the 48 states. I then took a ride to Philadelphia for $200. I arrived at the hotel at 2am and I had a text stating that a tow truck would be arriving around 300 minutes (5 hours ...). I would have missed my flight. The next day I landed in Atlanta (lay over on my way to Albuquerque) and I got a call from the towing company saying they were at the car but needed the keys, I told them that that wasn't going to happen and they hung up. I called AVIS on Friday (3 days after the flat tire) and asked if the car was picked up and they said no. I asked to talk to a manager and they said they would call me in 48 hours.... (AVIS is nothing but unhelpful and slow). They did not call me at all so I called them the following Friday and got a hold of a manager (Jack... by the way just as useless) and he said I can't do anything for you until the contract is closed... which will take 3 to 5 days. I will have to call next Friday to follow up and AVIS refuses to call me back after the contract is closed but is now my responsibility to keep calling till it gets closed.

I rented from AVIS last weekend and received a car with mechanical issues, safety issues and then when I called for assistance, I was charged additional fees for the roadside assistance. I had paid for an ungraded convertible in Florida, the cars rear brake lights never went out even when just idling in park making it a safety concern, the engine had to be feathered to continue to maintain any speed, the cruise control did not work because of this, and then I needed a jump start as the constant brake lights being on all night killed the battery and I was charged for them to send someone out to jump start the car...Don't ever use them as the only response I got was an apology saying "We are sorry you had a bad experience". No offer to refund anything or make things right with an added $220 charge for the jump start...

I made an online reservation for a car rental as part of my trip over the holidays. I paid for the rental in full at the time of my reservation. However, when I tried to pick up my car rental, the Avis customer service representative would not let me rent the car, though I had proof of my reservation. She claimed that Avis wouldn't allow me to use a debit card though I provided her with a debit card that can be run as credit. Furthermore, Avis' own rental terms and conditions state that a debit card may be used. After my trip, I spent weeks getting the run-around from Avis customer service as I tried to get a refund. I still have not received a refund for this service that I already paid for. My entire experience with this company was less than professional.

BEWARE!!! I rented a vehicle from this location for five days in July to travel up north. I paid for a Volkswagen Jetta or similar mid sized car and instead was given an 8 cylinder minivan. When I picked up the vehicle it was full of dog hair, vomit, and dog food. I switched the car out at a different Avis and again did not receive the vehicle I paid for. It is noteworthy that this car also had not been cleaned even during the height of a global pandemic. My elderly mother has flea bites from the first vehicle and to top it all off they charged me for an extra day though I returned this piece of junk well within the time limits. I contacted customer service (which took DAYS to achieve) and was given no refund and a cursory letter of apology. If you would like to literally leave your life and well being in the hands of an abhorrent company, then I highly recommend. I have contacted the health department and am in the process of filing a lawsuit against the company. So for $500 I am left with hospital bills for my mother and am understandably furious. Go somewhere else to rent a car- trust me.

My rental was for an insurance claim. Normally I go through Enterprise, but wasn't able to get something quick enough. The woman I spoke with at Avis got me something very quickly. The day I picked up the rental the guy acted like I was bothering him. He had me initial a few things, sign and boom was on my way. I thought this was strange as at Enterprise they explain everything to you and go out to look at the vehicle with you to ensure there are no problems. Knowing the rental policies with Enterprise I didn't ask any questions. I return the vehicle yesterday with 0 problems. Today i look at my bank account to find a charge from Avis. I call and get the guy that did the agreement the day I picked up. He tells me that the woman had upgraded me to a truck at an SUV rate. I had mentioned I drove a truck and wanted a bigger vehicle, so her thought on that was appreciated. The problem is, I was never told that the upgrade would put me at my limit for my insurance coverage and that I was going to be stuck with the sales tax, $135. Had anyone at any point in time explained this to me I would've said no, find me something cheaper as I did not have the extra money to be covering this. Yhe guy then proceeds to tell me "well maybe you should ask questions." How am I going to ask questions on something I never knew about? I call the corporate office and get told they won't do anything. I filed a complaint so that hopefully these people will learn how to do their jobs properly and someone in the future doesnt get screwed the way I did. Thank you Avis, now I'm out my grocery shopping money for my children and you taught me a valuable lesson. Never go through Avis and steer everyone you know to stay away from you.

Really, REALLY, bad experience with Avis, generally speaking. However, their Covid19 response was the worst. Because I canceled my reservation through the app and did not call them (they were not answering for hours at a time) I had to pay the full cancelation fee. This is because I did not wait until closer to the date (by 6 days). The customer service manager (note, manager) that I spoke with lectured me for 3 minutes, without allowing me to speak, from a script and then told me that it was my fault that I was being charged the fee. Where is the compassion for customers who didn't receive this "information" on how to call them and do things properly? Where is the compassion for customers who are canceling their trip because of Covid19 and have no options? You know the $50 fee is not really a big deal for me financially, but for many out there right now that is a trip to the grocery store! This is a nasty corporate money grab and also money poorly spent, as I will never do business with them again (after 23 years of business with them). What I will do, however, is spread the story of how I was treated. How this company responded in the greatest public health crisis of their time! Avis should be ashamed.

Would love to be able to take stars away from this company. Skip the online reservation and the laughable confirmation number. Even though it's 2020, this company lacks the ability to determine whether a site will have the car class you have reserved. The online process of picking a location, time and vehicle are a complete waste of time. You will be offered sonething else for a higher price or you will get the option of sitting around until someone brings in the type of car you "reserved". Everyone is apologetic, but this is common practice at Avis, apparently. Do yourself a favor and check out Turo instead.

I am (was) an Avis Preferred customer and have rented from Avis quite a bit in the past, never with great results, so I never expect much. I often fly into West Palm Beach airport as was the case Feb 5, 2020. As usual, the car in my reserved spot, was not mine and it took quite a while to straighten that out, no thanks to the rude employee at the counter. But it went downhill from there. Near the end of my visit, my car had a starter issue and I almost got stuck. Unlike Enterprise which has come to my rescue in the past with a car that had an issue, Avis wasn't really interested. Eventually, I had to drive the problematic car forty minutes to the airport, was made to feel like I was wrong to be upset, wait outside in the heat for an additional twenty minutes for another car and drive forty minutes back to my wheelchair bound mother to try to make appointments that were delayed. When I requested some refund from Avis, I was told "too bad". How's that for customer service. I strongly recommend that you do not rent from Avis, and I know I never will again.

I have rented with Avis many times when travelling for work, and nearly every experience in a variety of cities has been miserable. First off, many cars are filthy and not cleaned at all. Seats stained, nasty stuff collecting in cupholders etc. Recently I had to return one of my cars because it had an unbalanced wheel. I spent hours trying to call every phone number imaginable, and people either hung up on me or couldn't understand English well enough to help. Every time I have to deal with the rental agent, they seem to know very little and are never helpful. The worst offense is that recently they sneaked in a "Select and Go" upgrade which added almost $400 to a 6 day rental, nearly doubling the cost. The rental agent assured me that this "upgrade" was just the normal daily rate so like an idiot I listened to him and accepted, since the rate shown was about what I expected for the daily rate. I did not understand that this was in fact added to the existing daily rate. Now they refuse to refund me, claiming that I chose this upgrade, despite the fact that they literally had to explain to me what the upgrade was when explaining to me how I chose it. Save your money, your time, and your sanity and rent with literally anybody else.

When we booked the vehicle for our trip to Costa Rica, we paid for the liability insurance and declined the CDW insurance since our credit card covered us. It was on the Avis website itself, that we saw that it was possible to do this. We therefore asked the insurance company linked to our credit card to send us an official letter explaining the details of the insurance coverage suggested to us by several travel sites. When we arrived in San Josee on January 13th, the agent at the counter systematically refused to let us take possession of the vehicle if we didn't buy Avis CDW. We showed him the Allianz letter, he didn't even look at it and was very rude to us. In the end, we had to pay for the CDW insurance EVEN though our credit card covered us for almost $500 CAD more!! We sent an email to the customer service and they answered that the company reserves the right to deny the customer's insurance... this information is not indicated anywhere! You didn't give us the choice to buy your insurance otherwise we didn't have a vehicle. A real company of SCAMMERS!

I've been Avis customer since 2007. I used to be Avis First before they discontinued that level, then went to Avis Preferred Plus. My records show that over that period I paid them US$60K, with 10 to 30 rentals each year. So maybe I'm not the top customer but certainly not the last one. The had been issues with Aeroplan Miles awarded for rentals. I'd take advantage of a promotion, enter all the codes - and sometimes not get all the miles promised, or no miles at all. I'd contact customer service, and after some back&forth they'd issue those miles. Last fall I had several rentals with that issue - and they eventually said I didn't use the right code when I was booking. So when I had to book a rental next time, I made sure to take screenshots of every step, noting that I follow what's written in the promotion to the letter. And when I didn't get the miles, I sent all that to Avis CS asking for the credit. That was last December, and they first said it would take 5 to 7 business days, and when I called again two weeks later, they said they need 10 more business days - no explanation why they couldn't give an accurate ETA. So I called again today - only to find out that my claim was denied and the case was closed. They ignored all the evidence basically saying since the code is incorrect in their system - there's nothing they can do. They ignored my question: how can I make sure the data in their system is correct, since I don't have access to it, I only see what I enter myself. I've spoken to four CS agents today, and all of them were rude and inconsiderate at the end of our conversation. I have decided that I no longer want to do any business with a company that treats its "preferred" clients so poorly.

I returned my recent rental to the avis location KY4 in Katy Texas with a full tank of gas. Two days later I noticed a charge of almost $80 on my bank statement from avis. Upon investigation I discovered that I was charged that amount because the location reported the vehicle was not returned with a full tank of gas. I had to provide proof of gas purchase to which I will have to wait 3-5 business days to receive refund. This is very inconvenient and frustrating. I will never do business with avis and highly recommend that anyone who does monitor their bank account in the days following a rental return for any extra charges that are inaccurate and unwarranted.

The worst rental car company. Pros- *Ability to rent w/any state DL. *No deposit to no more than 100 deposit. *Upgrade can be given Cons- *Customer service Call center does not know Avis policy’s. I spoke with 5 different agents just so I can confirm details if my reservation. The agents DO NOT know the policy at all. Only two agents spoke the same thing the other 3 agents said different things. *Everytime I called I would have to give detail info because I’m rental wasn’t found. *I called to extend a rental and I confirmed the extension even two different agents confirmed my extension and I thought I was good to go until 3 DAYS later I received a phone call from a automated system that my rental was 3 days pass due. But I called to extended. I called the customer service because you will never ever ever ever reach anyone at the actual location in DC. So no I’m being told I have to go to a Avis location the sane one I picked up the car at just to get all my details straighten out. I’m so lost. Enterprise I recommend to anyone. It’s a smooth process. Anytime changes needed to be done with enterprise I’ve never had a issue with enterprise. AVIS IS STRESSFUL!! Unprofessional!! Unknowledgeable!!!

Defective cars, 0 stars! I rented a car October 19 - 31 in San Luis Obispo, CA. While I was driving about 30 miles to my hotel late at night, the tire pressure warning light came on. I had business meetings for the next couple of days and wasn't able to deal with this defective car except to air up the tires. Only one tire was low, and I aired it up a total of 3 times before I had time to swap the car during their business hours. I needed roadside assistance because I was afraid to drive the 30 miles back to the airport on a bad tire. I explicitly asked Avis if I would be charged for the assistance and the agent said "no charge". If the agent had told me there would be a charge, I would have used the other roadside assistance plan that I have. On October 31 when I was going to return it, the second car refused to start -- also defective. Again, I called for roadside assistance, again I asked if this would be charged to me, again the agent said "no". Roadside assistance took so long to get to me the second time that I missed my 12:30 p.m. flight, the last departure of the day. I called Avis again, and explained that now I would have to get a hotel for the night and Avis should pay for the hotel as it was because of their defective vehicle. Avis refused to cover the hotel but did extend my rental agreement. The supervisor offered to give me 2 nights free on this rental and exchange the defective car a 2nd time -- to my third car in less than 2 weeks. When I turned in the car on November 1, the Avis counter wasn't open yet, so I could not get a receipt. I called the location and Avis' main number trying to get the receipt on November 1 Nov, 2 , 4 , and 7 . Several times they said they emailed it to my address on file, that I should wait at least 4 hours to get it. I never received it. Finally I requested and got the reciept at an alternate email address -- it shows no evidence of the promised 2 free days. Now, 3 whole weeks after the first, tire-related, roadside assistance incident, I received a letter saying that I owe Avis $160 ($135 for the towing cost, + $25 for administrative cost) plus the cost to repair the damaged tire. The tire was already damaged when I picked up the car -- I could not have damaged it! An Avis agent told me there would be no charge! Again I called customer service. There was a record of the first roadside call, but mixed in with it were the notes from the second roadside call that I requested hotel reimbursement but Avis refused. Now I'm out: $200 for the airline change fee $151.61 for the 1 night in the hotel $30 for dinner (if Avis hadn't caused me to miss my flight, I would have eaten at home) $160 for the first roadside assist call ??? for the tire repair $160 for the second roadside assist call (I assume, as it hasn't been 3 weeks yet for their letter to reach me) The total before the tire repair already exceeds the cost of the rental! Avis, this is no way to treat a customer, much less a customer who's business you want to retain!

I've never had such bad customer service from a rental company, and I rent A LOT. Starting from the beginning, although the guy running the office was extremely nice, it was very disorganized. The car he tried to put me in had a check engine light. So I was give another car that smelled like an ash tray (I was not warned of this, though all the windows being down in 45° weather should have clued me in), and the car was filthy on ththe outside. I take part of the responsibility for not noticing the giant crack along the bottom of the windshield. I had just gotten off from work from a 12 hour shift, an hour before going in at 830a. I drove straight home (a 5 min drive), parked, and went to sleep. I noticed the crack when I got back in 8 or so hours later. I called the office while they were still supposed to be open and no one answered. My call was automatically sent to customer service who transferred me to a dept that was supposed to know how to amend the damage paperwork. They did not and I was told to go to the office the following morning when they open and "see" if they could take of it. Again, the guy was very helpful (though they never seem to answer their phones) and changed my damage form. Did I mention this car said its oil change was past due everytime I started the car? Moving on to me trying to extend my rental for four more days. I called customer service but only had the email with the reservation confirmation number because my contract is in the car. I asked the guy if there was another way he could look it up. Phone number, email, credit card? He told me he could do it with the car number. I dont process car rentals everyday so I assumed that meant the license plate number. That's not what he meant. It's the number on the keychain, though there are several. And when I finally finished with the extension process I asked for an emailed receipt of the transaction so i could have the price difference on file. I was told, "I cant send you anything but I can repeat it for you." So I have nothing but that jerks word that I'm not going to be charged a ridiculous amount. The gist is, what their customer service lacks in knowledge, they make up for in rudeness. Will definitely be the last time I use Avis. Hertz may be a bit further from me but they have comparable prices, picks you up, has never given me a car with issues, or treated me so rudely.

First time and last time I rent with Avis! I went to the one in Worcester Regional Airport in MA. They "upgraded" my car to a SUV which was a gas guzzler. I expressed that I will be driving 2 hours everyday and I needed something more fuel economical, which is why I initially DID NOT reserve for an SUV. I expressed it will be difficult to go back to the airport location, where I initially picked up the car because they close at 6pm. Due to school and work scheduled I will not be able to get there on time. They stated I can go to any Avis location to exchange the car. The next day (Sunday) I get in the car and turn on the heat and it reeks like cigarette smoke. I called on Monday to exchange the car and no car was available near my work location. I called Tuesday and I get the same story. I am told I cant return the car and get the differential and I get an "Im sorry you, could try tomorrow again". I pick up my kids from school and we have to drive with the windows down due to the smell and I have to put $60 in gas every 2 -3 day. This company is garbage.

Went to Florida in beginning of August with my Dad. Well we rented from Avis and the problem is: when I returned the car the guy immediately took the car and brought it somewhere. I guess to clean and rent it again. I realized that my key for condo was still in car. I called and they found the key weeks later. Funny because the key was attached to the car keychain. Well now they want to charge me $30 to FedEx it to me (and that's NOT overnight. But I have to pay......I FedEx things over night to Florida and it's only $15-$20 depending on morning or afternoon delivery. That's Ridiculous!! They're making money on this? They I'm sure have a corporate account and use it frequently so they even get better pricing! I said it's only ONE KEY can't you send via post office and I'll pay $4/$5 for shipping. I can make a new key for $$3.00 Avis is just a Rip Off. Never again will I use them!!! #avis #aviscarrental #neveragain #ripoff #avisripoff #avisrental #aviscar #avisdisappointmemt

i rented from avis for 2 months, after the 2 months was over, i extended it for another 2 months. the avis rep on the phone told me its going to take about a week for the extension to go in the system, but the car needed a oil change, so she told me to go to any avis location to swap cars, but i was concerned that since the the extension was not in system it will be a problem. so the avis rep told me its not a problem. so i went to avis jfk to swap cars, they toke my car and told me my rental is over due, so i cant get it back, and they didn't wanna give me a new car. so i was stuck in jfk without a car. so think twice befor you rent with avis

I took a rental car with Autopass included from Oslo airport, used Avis/Budget badged subcontractor located there who assured me the Autopass etag was working, nothing more for me to do or pay, before I drove away - contrary to what the Avis rental contract states! The Autopass etag proved to be a dud; suspected when passing through road toll points, then proved when ferry onboarders tried their handheld scanners to no avail. When I was eventually overcharged I put the message through to Avis/Budget customer service, they went silent, then I went to Norway Innovation (Govt agent) they pointed me at the Ministry... no response. Cannot use Norwegian Consumer Council because you need to be a Norwegian resident with a national ID to do that. The Norwegian Govt behaves as though it cannot manage Norwegian businesses that behave fraudulently, so sad, too bad, won't be back. Certainly would never recommend Avis/Budget at Oslo Airport as a rental car source.

One of the worst experiences with a company. I ended up being charged double after all those fees were in place making the discount code I used worthless. They rented me a car with an expired plate. When I brought it to their attention they said it’s okay we would have paid for your ticket as if that made it better. They then said they would not put the new tag on until the car returned to where the expired car came from. I was in NY it came from SC. Customer service told me that I could pay in person with a specific card so that I could use a tax exemption. Upon arrival the way I was told to pay on the phone a couple weeks before was no longer acceptable to them. Next time I will for sure use another company even if it’s more expensive. This company is so bad it’s literally the first review I’ve ever written for any company.

I am thankful to be alive after renting from Avis. My two small children and I were stranded in Panama City Beach Florida after our car broke down. We made it 20 minutes from our drop off location and the car completely dies. I am in the center of I75 North and it DIES! The car looses speed, the battery light comes on, then all other lights on the panel light up. With tractor trailer trucks behind me and surround by cars going 70 MPH, my life along with my two small children lives flashed before my eyes. I managed to roll to the side of the road by the grace of GOD without being killed. After several tries got the car to start again. The check engine light stays on. I looked up the closest drop off which was about 1 mile away. I took the next exit, got gas and slowly made it to the closest Avis. I told Anthony, at the Windy Hill Marietta location everything that had happened while still in tears and very shaken up. Anthony then just made a comment about how many miles I had put on the car and had to go and look at the mileage before he confirmed that we could leave the vehicle there. When Anthony returned I asked if he saw the check engine light. Anthony told me that he only looked at the mileage and nothing else. Anthony did wave the $20 fee for dropping it off at his location rather than the initial drop off location. I have called Avis corporate office and spoke to Eric who told me that my situation was not typical and then completely brushed me off. I then got the number to the Marietta drop off location and spoke to Anthony again. Anthony informed me that Pep Boys checked the car, even though it was new and no lights were on, and it diagnostically checked out fine...then admitted the check engine light was on, which was from me not closing the gas cap tight enough??? My fear is for someone else to get in the silver Mazda CX5 and being hurt if not killed like we almost were. I know that if I owned a car rental company and I had someone explain this situation to me I would try to accommodate them in some way for the horrible experience. I would most certainly not blow them off and be rude.

Arrived at about midnight to find that they did not have the standard size car that I reserved (overheard the same conversation play out at 3 other windows). They were nice to upgrade us to a full size Ford Fusion at no charge. There was a long line behind us so the lady did not go over anything just that we would be upgraded and sign here and here. When we got into the car we saw that it had a toll pass in the window and wondered if we could use the tollway for free as part of the upgrade. I quickly looked at the agreement papers and found this part "You can avoid the convenience fee and any other charges by paying the toll in cash, using your electronic toll device, or avoiding any cashless toll road or passage" since the car had an electronic toll device I assumed it should be covered. Erring on the side of caution because of the cost of tolls in Denver (and the outrageous toll scam agreement Avis runs with their "toll partner") I decided I should follow up with an employee. Upon leaving the facility I asked the gentleman that checked us out of the lot for more details, I explained that we got upgraded and this car had a toll device and asked if that meant we could use it without charge. He confirmed this to me before we left. We did not use the toll way until the very last day when we got on it for about 15 miles or so.... lo and behold 8 days later a charge for $29 shows up as pending on our credit card! I called the Denver location and the lady quite rudely refused to discuss this billing and stated "it is written on the term papers and so and so and some other location, tolls are not covered". I called the corporate office customer service and was talking to someone whom I could hardly understand and after explaining my situation to him , he tells me to call the toll payment partner... I have been holding with them for over 15 minutes now as I write this review stewing about my choice to go back to Avis. I have been a long time patron of Enterprise but after a very good first experience at Avis (due to no availability at Enterprise) I decided to try them again over Enterprise. Big mistake... I will NEVER rent from Avis again after this experience.. I hope they enjoy their $29 scam fee. Do yourself a favor and check out Enterprise or Budget if your flying into Denver.

On April 9th I reserved a vehicle from your Lucas Drive, Detroit, Michigan location. It was to be picked up on the 12th and returned on the 15th. On the 12th I picked up the vehicle . The vehicle was used over the weekend. On the 15th I stopped at Alter Inc. Service Station, 14820 E. Jefferson Ave., Detroit, Mi. at 7:34 AM. I put $9.00 worth of fuel (3.13 gal @ $2.87.9 per gal). I arrived back at the Avis Rental Return at 8:14 AM,. The female attendant flagged us into the long line and with a handheld unit checked our rental in while I got the luggage out of the trunk. She told us the shuttle was about to leave so she handed us the receipt and we rushed to catch the shuttle. After arriving home I checked the receipt and found I was charged additional funds. I contacted the Avis in Detroit and they opened a case (27760093) and told me to send the fuel receipt. I sent a screen of the debit transaction and sent it in. On the 16th I received an email basically saying that was not good enough. Since the gas station was over 5 mile away it did not count. I have rented from Avis for many years. If this is what your company has developed into then I think it’s time to consider another company.

Be warned, many Avis locations are franchises. Avis itself will not stand by them. In short, you are left to deal with Shady Motors Incorporated on your own! I rented a car from an "Avis" location only to find out a month and a half later that it was a franchise. How did I find out you ask> It's simple. After returning the car full, this company billed me a month and a half later for $42. My Avis paper work says the car was returned full clear as day. After countless hours on the phone, writing emails, and submitting paperwork, they tell me that I'm on my own. After searching this particular shady franchise, you find that they are known for this very scam. Avis just doesn't care to admit one of their children is stealing from their customers. After many years using Avis, I am done. Good luck!

I rented in Fairbanks. No visible damage. Heard a noise driving out of their parking lot. Heard it several times on the way to the hotel. Slept 5 hours, checked out the noise and found a piece of plastic UNDER the car rubbing on the tire. Returned it. They said I had an accident!! I offered to take a polygraph test. For 9 days I waited. Then called the Claims Dept. and they dropped the claim. A week later, they again said that I owe them $817. It is not yet resolved, but they are thieves. DO NOT RENT FROM AVIS!! Their reviews on consumeraffairs.com have over a thousand reviews with a ONE STAR rating.

Be very careful when you're picking up your vehicle. This company (and Budget - they're the same company really) will try to load you up with all sorts of unnecessary add ons when you pick up your car, even if you've already made all your choices and submitted payment beforehand. The area in the Dayton OH airport terminal is very loud due to the close proximity of the baggage claim area and though the customer service rep we encountered was very friendly, she also talked and laughed so much that it was distracting and it was also hard to understand everything she was saying due to the noise. We ended up accidentally agreeing to very expensive additional insurance coverage, that actually cost more than our round trip tickets to Dayton! We didn't realize that we were signing to pay an additional fee - we thought we were signing to pay what we'd ordered online. When we returned the vehicle, we realized that we'd payed nearly $1000 for four days of a rental car! We tried to discuss this with the manager but he would not come out and talk with us. We tried calling corporate (numerous times) but they only stuck to the assertion that we had agreed to this and that "the manager heard us agree to this" (an impossibility since he was in the back, at the other counter, and the place was extremely loud anyway). In fact, we had stated emphatically several times during the CSR's spiel that we did NOT want any additional insurance. We will never use Budget or Avis again, though we travel often for business and pleasure and often use rental cars. VERY unhappy and I believe their actions were very, very unethical. They get bonuses for these add ons. PAY VERY CLOSE ATTENTION if you decide to give them your business.

We received a letter that we were being charged a $250 cleaning fee because of a "smoke smell" in the rental car returned to Oakland CA airport. The person we returned it to got in the car and mentioned nothing. I called the number on the letter and was told: 1. the appeal process is the phone call I was making -- there is NO WAY to contest the charge; 2. they would not consider any documentation I could provide which would disprove the bogus charge. (Our child is severely asthmatic and can not be exposed to smoke - not even someone with smoke on clinging to their clothes -- and I offered medical proof and proof that our child was on the trip with us.) 3. if I agreed to the charge, they would reduce it by $100, which I felt was designed to pressure me to agree to a phony charge which was at least lower. BTW -- there is a complaint process: http://avisbudgetgroup.com/contact-us/customer-service/avis-complaint-escalation/ I found it by googling, it's not on the website, but why do I know about it, but their customer service supervisors don't?

Do not rent from Avis. If you get stranded prepare to wait for 6h for a tow truck because they are calling around to save a few bucks without any regard for the stuck person. Also, unexplained additional charges on my CC. No invoice. Customer service does not respond, cannot get through by phone, emails get responded to after weeks and then without any resolution. Someone did reach out only to disappear again without resolution. What a scam.

Avis is the worse car rental I have used and they lie! I rented a car in Hawaii and 2 days later they added a bogus $164.71 to my credit card. I called and they said it was it was a deposit and when I returned the car it would be refunded. They never refunded it! I have been dealing with them on the phone for several days. Their customer services stinks!! They outsource the customer service so you can't understand then then they hang up on you. They added more charges to my credit card. They get one star because I can't give less. I booked a car through Travelocity. When I went to pick up, they had a power outage and were doing everything hand written. The representative couldn't find the car I reserved, so they gave me a more expensive one (I had no idea). Avis charged me $667.65 and refuse to refund me. They want me to dispute the lesser charge with Travelocity. They take forever to respond and are not helpful AT ALL! It's been 24 days! I would rather walk than rent from them again.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY!! - Be careful before you book and read the fine print. If you have to cancel even if just a few minutes later you will be stuck paying a $50 charge, no exceptions. Only company to do this. -They are the only company out there that caps your mileage then charges you $.25 every mile over. Everyone else has unlimited mileage for the same price. Rip off! - You think you're getting a deal at first, then you realize they add charges the others don't and you end up paying more for much less than what others are offering.

I realized this morning that the vehicle registration is expired. I called Avis to help me out, I spent over 2 hours on the phone and was in angry tears by the end because not one person would help me. My husband is an 82 year old equine vetinarian who was traveling to Wellington Fl for the horse show. He has COPD. The CDC advised anyone over 80 years old to avoid flying. When I called to cancel the car I was informed that there would be a $50 cancellation fee in spite of the fact that the US is experiencing a pandemic and the cancellation was 3 days before the scheduled pickup date. This is price gouging! We have been members of Avis for over 30 years but will never use Avis again and will suggest to our friends to do likewise.

Do not rent from this avis. Had a reservation cancelled by some sort of accident online. Got told oh well we are keeping your $150 dollars and no your reservation can't be uncanceled even though it was never cancelled to begin with . We're out a cancellation fee of $150 and we had to go and rent a vehicle through another company so we wouldn't get screwed again. 09624226us3

Rented a car from Avis during my summer vacation in Europe. I picked up a speeding ticket. Instead of Avis charging my credit card directly they charged an admin fee to PASS along my info to the authorities. Other more reputable rental companies take care of all speeding tickets and fines and by charging you credit card directly instead making you jump through hoops. This has been on going for 6 months. Save your self the hassle and go with a better rental company

I think it must be the whole company as I rented in Vero beach on March 2nd and drove 1/5 hr to Orlando airport to drop it off. I am old with no children. They charged my credit card 250 saying I left the car dirty. They refused to send me photos. I will never trust Avis again.
