I'm a 74 year old veteran who is presently retired. I was for about a decade a Personal Injury attorney many years ago. Most of my adult life I had either Geico or Criterion auto coverage. Due to an abnormal dispute over renewal premiums, I checked out USAA and they were substantially less expensive, the only coverage quirk being I previously had 10K of PIP but USAA only went to 2.5 K. I have had several property damage or comprehensive claims that were promptly handled to my satisfaction. I had heard previously that USAA handles claims by its policy holders well but not by 3d party claimants. That has not been my experience so far. As to health coverages, my income [ social security] is low enough that I have full VA health coverage with no co pays or costs.

The standardized coverage provided by USAA is no better or worse than others. The main downside is cost as this year, my Medicare Supplemental policy is annually priced about $400 more than that of competitor's policies.

Been trying to get a PCM for about 7 months now but no one is accepting new patients, went to the emergency room this morning and they issued a consult but Tricare will not accept any consult that is not from a PCM. Have no clue what to due, I am in so much pain. Thank you for nothing
The Final Word
In contrast, USAA offers more traditional plans to its members. These plans include comprehensive, short term, and fixed health benefit plans. USAA also offers Medicare Advantage, Part D, and Medigap insurance. All of the plans offered through USAA are administered by other health insurers, including Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield and Cigna.
Because TRICARE’s plans are designed for specific situations, each plan has eligibility requirements. For all of TRICARE’s plans, members must be in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System. TRICARE coverage is available to former spouses and survivors of military service members.
USAA has fewer eligibility requirements for its members. Current and retired military members and their families are eligible for USAA membership, which means they are also eligible for the health plans offered through USAA.
USAA is also advantageous for those interested in purchasing Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans, Part D (prescription drug) plans, or Medicare supplement insurance (Medigap) plans.
While both USAA and TRICARE are great choices, USAA has fewer eligibility requirements associated with its plans, offers more kinds of health insurance plans, and offers Medicare plans that TRICARE does not.
