Southwest Airlines is a large US airline headquartered in Dallas, Texas. In fact, it is the world’s largest low-cost carrier. The airline was established in 1967 and adopted the name "Southwest" in 1971. It offers over 4,000 flights a day with 90+ destinations in the US and ten additional countries.

Southwest is one of the largest Boeing operators. In fact, it only operates 737s. Southwest has over 550 737s in service, with each of them getting around six to seven flights per day.

Southwest is not without controversy. Recently, the company got into trouble with the government for offering a quoted rate on its website that was not actually a real fare for any seat on a flight. Also, in July 2014, a customer and his family were asked to leave a flight because he was not allowed to board a flight early as an A-list member. He tweeted his dissatisfaction and was kicked off the flight and told to remove his tweet.

The Good

  • Low Cost
  • Two Bags Checked Free
  • On-Time Flights
  • Amenities and Entertainment

Low Cost

Southwest is a low-cost airline. Ticket prices are some of the lowest on the market. On top of its low prices, Southwest offers many discounts and promotions on their website. The rewards program is also beneficial and easy to use. It is clear to see how to earn a free flight through Southwest. These different promotions and specials available can help ensure that Southwest is the lowest price available for many domestic flights.

Two Bags Checked Free

Southwest has a generous checked baggage allowance—two free checked bags per passenger.

Many other airlines charge for more than one checked bag and some airlines don't allow any free checked baggage at all. This makes Southwest one of the top airlines for checked baggage.

Any checked bags (after the two free) cost $75 per bag.

There are size restrictions for baggage on Southwest Airlines. Bags need to be less than 50lbs and have dimensions (length + weight + height) of 62 inches.

Overweight items (51lbs to 100lbs) and oversized items (63 inches to 80 inches) will also be accepted at a fee of $75 per item.

On-Time Flights

Southwest Airlines has a very high on-time percentage for most of their flights: roughly 85% on-time, 6% late, 2% very late, and 4% excessively late (information according to Flightstats.com). This is higher than a number of other top airlines. However, some of the most-active routes received low ratings. Top flights include:

  • Burbank to Oakland (3.2 stars, 87% on time)
  • Phoenix to San Diego (3.2 stars, 85% on time)
  • Los Angeles to San Jose (3.2 stars 83% on time)

This shows that even top flights are barely receiving three stars. Southwest's lowest-ranked flight is Dallas to Austin, receiving only 1.5 stars and being on-time roughly 70% of the time. Many other top airlines have a large number their most active flights in the four-star range. Compared to this, Southwest does not compare as well as some other top airlines.

Amenities and Entertainment

Southwest offers many of the standard amenities when it comes to in-flight services. As a low-cost airline, some in-flight services are lacking when compared to those that other top airlines provide. Check out some of the airline's in-flight amenities:

  • Entertainment: Southwest allows passengers to use personal devices for their entertainment and provides free live and on-demand television. This includes 19 live channels and up to 75 TV episodes from popular series. There are also more than 25 current movie choices available for purchase on flights. Southwest does not have other means for entertainment besides passengers personal devices. Most other airlines have some sort of screen provided and many more options for media.
  • Food and dining: While a number of the major airlines offer meal options on their flights, this low-cost airline does not. However, complimentary drinks and snacks including pretzels and peanuts are available. Many other low-cost airlines do not offer any complimentary items like this.
  • Wi-Fi: For $8 a day, passengers can access wi-fi services on personal mobile devices to browse the web, check emails, and explore social media sites. This is also how the in-flight entertainment is streamed. This is a very affordable option that not every airline provides. However, not every flight with Southwest offers wi-fi. Passengers can check amenities with flight information on the Southwest website to check if their flight will have wi-fi or not. Flights without wi-fi service do not have other options for entertainment.

The Bad

  • Boarding Process
  • Open Seating Policy
  • Ten Minute Rule
  • Limited Destinations
  • Government Action
  • Limited Aircraft Comforts

Boarding Process

The boarding process on Southwest is slightly different than most other airlines. Instead of having passengers choose a seat with some type of interactive map during purchase or check-in, Southwest does not assign any seats. It gives a group (A, B, or C) and a number (1-60) to assign the order of boarding.

Open Seating Policy

Southwest uses an open seating policy so passengers can sit anywhere that is open once they have boarded the plane. This would make the boarding process less smooth than airlines that assign or let passengers choose seats beforehand.

With an open seating policy, passengers may be confused as to where to go and may run into more problems or potentially take longer to be settled on the plane.

Ten Minute Rule

Passengers are suggested to be ready to board the plane 30 minutes before departure time and must have their boarding pass and be at the gate at least 10 minutes before departure time. If they have not arrived at least 10 minutes before, Southwest will cancel the reserved space and the passenger will not be eligible for the denied boarding compensation.

Limited Destinations

Southwest flies to 90+ different destinations (mainly domestic), although international routes are available to the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America. This is a small number of destinations when compared to other airlines, such as United which flies to 300 different destinations and many more internationally.

Keep in mind that the 90+ served destinations cover most of the United States. For passengers that need to travel domestically, Southwest would most likely be able to serve in their desired destinations.

For passengers who want an airline that is able to take them to both international and domestic destinations, Southwest would most likely not be able to serve them the best. Looking at just the number of destinations, Southwest would be considered a small airline.

Government Action

There is an alert for this company because of a government action which was recently placed against them in 2014. At that time, Southwest advertised $59 flights to certain destinations. However, after an investigation, it was shown that there were no seats available to any destination at that price.

The airline was fined for their deceptive advertising. This false advertising is a red flag for how Southwest has in the past conducted business.

Limited Aircraft Comforts

We also felt like the Boeing-driven fleet reduced some of the comfort creature features for customers. Generally, Airbus planes include bigger and better seats, with more seat pitch and width.

gavel

The Bottom Line

We recommend Southwest wholeheartedly. It is difficult to beat its prices. The Rewards points system is also great. Points don't ever expire, but you have to accrue points or keep your card active for 24 months. There are no blackout dates for your frequent flier points.

I have flown with Southwest many times throughout my life but I haven't flown with them recently because I have been disappointed in their customer service. I had 2 separate flights that were several months apart and each one was cancelled or delayed so badly that I missed all connecting flights. They were not willing to work with me on finding a different flight and I ultimately had to find different flights with different airlines and was only offered a partial reimbursement for one flight. Their prices are always competitive but when I fly with my family, I like to know that we have reserved seats together, not having to pick seats based off what boarding group we are in.

Booked round trip from Jacksonville Fla. to Midway, Chicago. At that time requested wheelchair assistance. I recently had a second surgery to repair a broken hip and lower back. At Jacksonville, not a single employee could find anyone to help me with my bags to thru TSA and to my gate so we ended up finding a stranger who helped. Then when we landed in Chicago, I was told to wait. We waited, and waited, and waited and nothing happened. I asked an employee about my wheelchair and was told basically, I was bothering them because that's not their job. They would get someone. Waited more.. time goes by and ask another person who tells me that I should have said something when we landed. Then they walk away. I literally had to pay an airport employee cash to help find me a wheelchair, then my 5 foot 100 pound wife had to push my 225 pound, 6' 3" body w/baggage thru the airport. Southwest way to deal with disabled persons, Fend for yourself unless you are lucky. They are sending me vouchers as compensation but that does me no good. I am in severe pain now a day later due to my being forced to use my hip and put weight on it etc. After flying Southwest for years, never again. Back to JetBlue who have always been perfect.

I would rate them higher, but I had a bad experience when they made an internal switch on the reservations. They changed my res number after half of my roundtrip was completed and I couldn't check in to get home. I did not have the credit card with me that was used to book. So they more or less told me I was out of luck and would have to go to the airport to check in. Anybody who flies Southwest knows that is a stupid answer. The customer service admitted that they changed something. I wanted to send an email with my confirmation and she said no. Too bad. Luckily I am part of a travel club so I called them and they resolved inside of 5 minutes by sending me the new number. Too bad I wanted an hour of my vacation with Southwest. I now try to avoid taking Southwest because of customer service.

Typically ok with small seating area, unless you're unlucky enough to get a middle seat. I check in at the very first opportunity 24 hours in advance to get the best chance of not having a middle seat or upgrade so I can be one of the first on the plane. However even this does not guaretee a good seat as our flight was late getting arriving, leaving and getting in and we had to RUN to the other side of the airport to make our connection. So instead of being one of the first to board we were the last and ended up between two larger people (I'm 6 foot 230 lbs myself) and it was not a fun 4 hour flight.

Southwest used to rate a 9 from me but changes to their frequent flyer program have been detrimental. When I joined, you could get a free flight to anywhere in the continental US for 18,000 miles. A trip from Tampa to Las Vegas next month is costing me 26,000 miles. Southwest rates a plus for non stop flights to Vegas and Wifi onboard with free entertainment for iPads and laptops. Getting an A priority for boarding used to be easy by just going online 24hrs before departure but now you have to pay $12 extra per flight for pre booking to get an A selection and even that route can result in a high A number, I would rate the airline higher if they would restore the old frequent flyer program which of course is unlikely,

I usually fly Southwest and love the free check bag policy. What I do not like is the early boarding. While it does work fairly well in the states it was a joke when in the Dominican Republic. They lined us up like cows and herded us out the door to board buses. You would have thought that all the early boarders would have been put on one bus and taken to the place first. No, after we boarded the bus they loaded everyone else onto the same bus so we were crammed behind everyone else. After we get to the plane then we had to regroup again before boarding. I'd rather have the option to purchase assigned seats.

I would give Southwest 5 Stars if it weren’t for their Las Vegas crew They have no compassion whatsoever for the disabled I refuse to go that route unless it’s the only option I received zero help being in a wheelchair I have issues with my neck and spine I felt invisible!! They need to be educated more I have a hard time walking. Now their App I will hands down give it a 5***** rating! It’s super easy, convenient and just a game changer for sure! Their fares are on point!

sometimes the two free bag s is NOt worth the drama of having sucky middle seat.. unless you pay 2x more for business class and get on first, you are guaranteed middle seat. No assistance from flight attendants.. and they know that the two ppl sitting there are not moving to you let in... never happens at Alaska. if you are not flying business class or free, not worth the drama

If you're willing to forego aesthetics & comfort (hello 1970's!) for a good deal and 2 FREE checked bags then Southwest Airlines is for you. Remember, you get what you pay for. I would suggest weighing out your circumstance. I'm single & without kids so schedule and price is why I would choose a Southwest flight over "comfort" (are any economy seats comfortable?) or aesthetics. However, my sister and her family (husband & 3 rowdy boys) will always travel Southwest solely for the 2 free checked bags and decent prices.

My only real complaint about Southwest is that they do not assign seats. I will fly it if I have to or if the flight times work out better for my travel schedule, but if I have the option I will always chose an airline that offers assigned seating. Traveling is stressful enough. I don't want to have to worry about not being able to have a comfortable seating arrangement on top of everything else.

I've ridden SouthWest many times, mostly to California. I really like the cheap prices, and their pilots definitely give a smooth ride. I am a taller man, and sometimes it feels like I'm doing yoga trying to fit into the seats I am given. I try to go for the seats over the wings as they seem to have more space for the emergency exits. The snacks could be better, but it's not bad. Overall, it is not a bad experience especially for the cost.

I recently had a 4 hour SW delay but saw United was still leaving at same time. I inquired of a non-busy SW gate desk if I could be reimbursed for a partial trip, that I wanted to rebook the 2nd leg of my flight. The girls said yes so I booked on Untied and walaa, once they looked at my actual ticket then they realized what I had been asking and said a refund was impossible. This is AFTER I booked on United. They admitted to their mistake, handed me a $200 voucher and said good luck on United. Wow. Thank you SW for your integrity. It matters.

On time flights seem to have slipped over the past year, however they are a reliable low cost carrier. Seats are tight. Always try to get the emergency exit row for some additional leg room. I have never been a fan of their open boarding process, but it seems to work for them. They have always been accommodating when having to make a change to a previously booked flight. Onboard flight attendants and pilots all very professional.

I am a rewards member and always fly Southwest. They are the cheapest and bags are always free. However, I was very disappointed in the experience of my last flight. It was May and I had been in California since January bc my Nana was dying. I was finally flying home to Texas to see my son. Sadly, both my checked suitcases were destroyed. I realize that its not always perfect, but they were brand new and now I can no longer use them. Southwest never responded to the claim and my luggage wasn't replaced. Made me very sad bc I love Southwest.

What I enjoy most about Southwest is the attitude of there employees. The employees are always upbeat and helpful. The flight times on more than one occasion have been late, but the friendliness and eagerness to inform the passengers has been great. I would fly them again, if they would have roomier seats, they would have gotten a 10. They pack you in like cattle.

You get what you pay for using this airline. Flights are really cheap and great if you are just going for a short trip with a carry on. But I dislike that you can't pick your seats and have to pay for baggage. Really hard to travel with a family that way.

They are good with luggages, a passenger is allowed up to 100lbs check in plus a carry on. What I don't appreciate is the one little pack of pretzels approximately 2 ounces, they can make that pretzel at least 8ounces or more.

Southwest is great if all youre looking at is prices. I’m a big guy, 6’1” 300 lbs. For my own comfort and for the comfort of those sitting next to me, I need an aisle seat. I hate having to get to the gate super early just to get to be able to board in one of the early boarding groups. If Southwest had assigned seating, I would give them 5 stars.

Southwest has had decent flights and been relatively on time with few cancellations, but the thing that keeps us from flying with them is not always being able to reserve seats, having to get in line by arrival time to get a seat, and not having enough room.
