The Good

  • Free Trial (subscription plan)
  • Refund Policy
  • Speed
Free Trial (Subscription Plan)
TotalVPN does not offer their customers a free trial. Instead, they have a limited VPN which is free. Those who sign up for the free VPN do not provide any billing information and simply need to download the app from the company's website or their mobile app store. The free plan limits the number of servers to three to which the customer can connect. Bandwidth and data transfer are also limited to 2 Mbps. Users of the free plan can only have one active device per IP address, so multiple users in the same house are not able to connect to the VPN with separate accounts.
Refund Policy
For those who select the Total Premium plan, TotalVPN offers all new users a 30-day money back guarantee. This request must come in writing and sent to the TotalVPN support team. All refund requests must be from new customers (those having previously had a subscription are not eligible) and within the first 30 days of the subscription. No other refunds will be granted during a membership to TotalVPN.
Speed
Independent speed test results do not specify the distinction between the speed of TotalVPN's free and Total Premium accounts. The company states that their free plan has diminished speeds, but does not give exact specifics. As such, the Review Team averaged the results of the speed tests reported by independent sites and the company performs quite well, with download speeds averaged to 19.29 Mbps and upload speeds of 4.87 Mbps. Both are close to the average non-VPN connection for the United States of 20.8 Mbps and 5.2 Mbps, respectively.

The Bad

  • Price
  • Multiple Add-On Charges
  • Transparency
Price
Total VPN offers a single paid plan for their members - the Total Premium.plan. This plan is regularly-priced at $6.99/month, but the company regularly offers first month specials. As of May 2017, the initial month is priced at $5.99, with subsequent months renewing at the then-current rate. Subsequent payments are paid in full and in advance for the duration of the term. Renewal rates are as follows: $9.97/month for a 24-month subscription, $11.97/mo for a 12-month subscription, and $14.98/mo for a monthly subscription. Users can connect to any of the 30 global servers and have three devices connected simultaneously with the Premium plan. Users may select from several payment methods to pay their bill, including debit and credit cards (Visa, Mastercard and American Express) as well as PayPal payments. The company is working to add BitCoin in the future. Unless TotalVPN is otherwise informed, all Total Premium subscriptions automatically are created with payments set to auto-renew at the end of the billing term (including any add-ons). Pricing with TotalVPN is higher than many of their competitors, with fewer choices of servers in their VPN.
Multiple Add-On Charges
TotalVPN has several add-on charges which offer upgrades to their service. Each of them is fully optional, but increase the price of their service. Add-ons are billed annually, unless otherwise stated and are only available for subscribers to the Total Premium plan. These include: Super charge - $24.95 per year
  • Users receive access to specific servers with fewer members, increasing the performance of the VPN tunnel
Priority support - $9.95 per year
  • Subscribers with Priority support are automatically placed at the front of the support queue
Online safety eBook - $9.95 (once)
  • Informative book about internet safety and how to protect oneself
Additional connection(s) - $14.95 per year per additional device
  • Users can pay for additional devices which they want to be connected simultaneously
Transparency
TotalVPN lists several types of information that they collect from their customers and how they use it, and that they may keep this information indefinitely, based upon the possibility that it may be needed in the future to assist their customers. This information is dependent on the nature of the communication or interactions with the company (sales, support, etc.). TotalVPN states that the only use for collected financial information collected is for billing for authorized purchases. If customers do not inform the company that they do not wish to be on automatic renewals, the company assumes that they want to continue their subscription with the same payment method used during initial subscription sign-up. An area which can be comforting to those concerned about privacy and the amount of information which is collected. TotalVPN is cautious in releasing personal information to unauthorized users and if a customer requests a record of their personal interactions with the company, they require additional verification of identification before doing so. TotalVPN also collects data about each connection with the VPN servers, as do many VPN providers. This information includes the user's IP address, amount of data transferred, times of connection and disconnection from the server as well as which server(s) were used during the connection. Internet sites visited, etc. are not collected or logged. TotalVPN states that they are under the jurisdiction to the laws and ordinances of the United States and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and cooperate with any request made by law enforcement.

The Bottom Line

TotalVPN has many areas which can stand to be improved before the Review Team can fully recommend their company for VPN services. The limitations on the free plan are understandable, but not in line with many similar plans which are ad-supported. There is much potential for the company though, and they might merit more serious consideration after they iron out the remaining details in their service.
