The Good

  • Expansive Service Area and Features
  • Apps for Every Occasion
  • Accepts Cryptocurrencies
  • High Transparency
  • 6 Months Free on Annual Plan

Expansive Service Area and Features

CyberGhost offers unlimited bandwidth to an expansive service area that includes 89 countries and more than 6,300 servers. In the event that potential customers are unable to find a desired VPN service, they can simply reach out directly to CyberGhost, and the company will actively work to expand its network of virtual servers accordingly.

In addition to its broad reach of countries and servers, the company also offers a number of features to its users:

  • Zero-logging — As a zero-logging service, CyberGhost allows users all over the world to roam the Internet anonymously, with no risk of their activities being tracked.
  • Military-grade encryption — CyberGhost’s 256-bit encryption protocols allow users to securely navigate the internet without their internet service providers monitoring their activity or browsing histories.
  • Geo-spoofing — CyberGhost allows users to hide or “spoof” their IP addresses. At the click of a button, users can replace their IP address with one provided by CyberGhost, making it impossible for websites to track their online activity.
  • Unlimited Wi-Fi protection — Opting for CyberGhost’s VPN allows users to connect to any Wi-Fi network without fear of having their data compromised or hacked.
  • Automatic kill switch — CyberGhost's automatic kill switch will disconnect users from the Internet until the VPN connection is restored. This feature prevents the user's IP address from being exposed.
  • NoSpy servers — The nospy server package offers users a suite of security features that effectively lower the risk of a DNS leak.

App for Every Occasion

Through the CyberGhost App, users on the following devices and browsers can stream, browse, game, chat, buy, or post without fear of having their data or browsing activities on display for the world to see:

  • Desktop app
    • Windows
    • MacOS
    • Linux
  • Mobile app
    • iOS app
    • Android app
  • Browser app
    • Chrome
    • Firefox
  • TV app
    • Amazon Fire Stick
    • Android TV
    • Apple TV
    • Roku
  • VPN protocols
    • OpenVPN
    • L2TP
    • IPSec
  • Gaming
    • Xbox One/360
    • PS4
    • Wii U

CyberGhost VPN is great for torrenting, and also helps users overcome geo-restrictions placed on streaming services like Netflix by eliminating proxy errors and bypassing network blocks.

Accepts Cryptocurrencies

In line with the company’s dedication to complete user anonymity, CyberGhost gives customers the option to pay for its services through Bitcoin — something most VPNs do not yet offer. Users can still make secure payments via PayPal or through a bank or credit card account; but for users who don’t want any evidence of their transaction to be traced back to them, CyberGhost’s Bitcoin integration is the most secure option.

High Transparency

Per independent research institute AV Test, CyberGhost is one of the most transparent VPNs available. Transparency is an important quality for VPNs as these companies are tasked with handling immense quantities of user data. AV Test evaluates top VPNs across 15 transparency metrics, and CyberGhost scored 13/15 accordingly:

  • Transparency report available online ✓
  • Identification of last report update ✓
  • Warrant canary available with date of most recent update
  • Information on executives and management ✓
  • Official company address ✓
  • Jurisdiction ✓
  • Date of company establishment ✓
  • Links to Privacy Policy ✓
  • Contact persons for data protection ✓
  • Indication of data collected ✓
  • What is the purpose of data collection? ✓
  • How long is the collected data stored?
  • Information on how data is safeguarded ✓
  • Information as to whether collected data is shared or stored ✓
  • Information as to whether personal data is collected by third parties ✓

6 Months Free on Annual Plan

To pass even more savings onto new customers, CyberGhost has announced a promotional deal that features six additional free months on its 12-month plan. This effectively lowers the monthly price of the company’s annual plan to $2.75. This promotion is on par with comparable offerings from other leading VPNs and should signal to potential customers the company’s desire to provide fair and competitive pricing to internet users throughout the world.

The Bad

  • High Month-to-Month Price
  • Protection for up to 7 Devices
  • Slower Upload and Download Speeds

High Month-to-Month Price

Despite its competitive promotional offering, CyberGhost’s month-to-month rate of $12.99 is markedly higher than its competitors. The month-long plan also features a 14-day money-back guarantee, which is much shorter than the 45-day window the company has attached to its other plans. Other leading companies provide an even 30-day money-back guarantee on all payment plans.

Protection for up to 7 Devices

CyberGhost’s services are available for up to seven unique devices per account. While this is an impressive number, other industry leaders give users greater flexibility by supporting even more devices. Some companies even claim to support an unlimited number of devices for a single account.

Slower Upload and Download Speeds

Although upload and download connection speed is highly variable and dependent upon a number of factors, including the speed of the user's ISP, whether the ISP throttles connections, the geographic distance to the VPN server, and the traffic on the server, CyberGhost reported lower than average download speeds and average upload data speeds, per a speed test from AV Test’s October 2019 report. The company earned average scores for both latency and video streaming data transfer, along with a below average score for its torrent data rate.

The Bottom Line

CyberGhost is unique in providing VPN services for no cost which are full-featured plans. The company offers its customers — both free and Premium plans — many features to enhance their connection and to help them to securely surf. CyberGhost is very transparent as a company and has extensive documents available to allow customers to see into its business practices and know what to expect.

Some customers report that their ISP blocks CyberGhost IP addresses, preventing them from connecting, but we were not able to confirm this information from the ISPs or CyberGhost. Customers paying for the Premium plans should note that these plans are more expensive than comparable plans from CyberGhost's competitors. There are more features and transparency with CyberGhost, however, so they may feel that the trade-off is acceptable.

We admire CyberGhost for its transparency and commitment to protecting privacy and recommend the company for those who are concerned about privacy issues.

CyberGhost is one of the best VPN servers out there. This network will honestly protect your privacy with its large amount of servers all with relatively fast connections, and even goes the extra mile with extra security measures and tools. Overall, CyberGhost is a safe and easy choice for VPN newbs… but do be prepared for higher prices than other VPNs.
