The Good

  • Features
  • Sample Itinerary
  • Team Coordination

Features

Designed to benefit frequent travelers and businesses, TripIt allows users to keep all of their accommodations in one organized platform that has a number of features which make it easy to alter or cancel reservations and receive refunds where eligible. There are different service levels provided by TripIt: a free device, a pro app, and a plan for businesses. This gives travelers the ability to find a plan that works for best for them and their needs.

Basic features found in both the TripIt and TripIt Pro plans include the ability to:

  • Organize travel plans in one place
  • Access itineraries on a smartphone or tablet using the free app
  • Add or edit plans manually, including notes, photos, and links
  • Sync travel plans with calendars
  • Selectively share trip plans
  • Store travel documents and travel booking details like your restaurant reservations, rental car confirmation number, hotel reservation number, or flight number
  • Offline access to your travel itinerary

Sample Itinerary

TripIt provides a sample travel itinerary that shows confirmation codes so users can easily check-in to their flight by accessing the airline's website in their internet browser. Whether a traveler is on the go or managing from the office, they can quickly keep track of all travel accommodations and flight details.

Team Coordination

TripIt for Teams is a great tool for teams that need to coordinate their business travel. Users can try this service for free for 30 days, after which it costs $49 per year and makes it easy for companies to stay organized and keep employees informed about travel plans.

The Bad

  • Account Required
  • Subscriptions

Account Required

Unfortunately, TripIt does not allow travelers to quickly input desired travel plans and view results in a matter of moments. In fact, consumers are required to have a TripIt account in order to gain access to even the basic app features.

Subscriptions

Consumers who are interested in the TripIt Pro app can try it out for free for 30 days, but after that, they will be required to pay a monthly or annual fee in order to take advantage of the following features:

  • Real-time flight alerts about delays, cancellations, and gate changes
  • Search for alternate flights
  • Seat tracker notifies when a preferred seat is available for your flight
  • Notifications when you are eligible for a flight refund
  • Track all of your travel rewards in one place
  • Easily share travel plans with your friends or family
  • Special offers on CLEAR and LoungeBuddy

The Bottom Line

TripIt is a travel app that offers a number of features, sample itineraries, and team coordination. However, the company requires consumers to have an account in order to use its services and charges pro users a monthly or yearly subscription for some of its plans.

All in all, TripIt may be a good option for businesses that need to manage frequent travel accommodations for employees. However, it probably is not the best option for individual travelers.

I really like it. I create very detailed itineraries to begin with and this App supports my behavior. I gave TripIt access to my email and it found restaurant, hotel, and airline reservations and set them up automatically in TripIt. I liked how it tracked events based on time zone. It gave me text alerts for my flights and it told me arrival and departure terminals and gates, It gave me terminal maps so I could spot food vendors near my gates. It showed me layover times. It synced between smartphone and web so I could update my plans in-flight and it would automatically sync-up my changes when I turned off airplane mode. The quality and accuracy of the software is very good. The only negative is that it is time consuming to setup a large trip plan. I had 60 events scheduled for an 11-day trip,

Adding trips is extremely easy when it comes to using the TripIt application. Very easy to navigate the Add a Trip drop down by adding any flights, hotel stays or any other activities that I have planned. I like the countdown feature to see where I'm currently stay, where I plan to stay next and where I already stayed. Just a fun way to see how your trip is progressing. The automatic forwarding of confirmation emails from my email inbox makes it very convenient as well when adding trips/plans to my itinerary.

I received an alert showing that my flight had been delayed. The alert came at. It was a delay from 0700 to 1730. I caught a taxi to a nearby hotel. I came back to the airport at 1500. The airline said that the flight was not cancelled. I would have to wait until the next morning to catch the next flight. I then had to buy another ticket. I made a recommendation to add VERIFY or VERIFY WITH CARRIER/AIRPORT to the end of alerts like that. We all know that travelers can get quite tired. I told them that I didn’t want to know their sources, only why the alert was wrong in general with no specifics needed. Otherwise, I see it as their reputation that takes a hit, especially with your pro membership. I did not want to speak ill of this company, if I didn't have to. The only compensation that I got was a free year of Tripit Pro. Tripit said, “We do not release our sources for where we receive our travel alerts information but have passed your feedback on to the appropriate team to help prevent future issues.” There is no way to know if they actually did that. Expecting more, Jeffrey Dean

The app is buggy. I have repeatedly reported problems to them, but instead of fixing the fundamental issues they add more features. The worst problem: the Android version frequently breaks when syncing offline changes. The only fix to this is to uninstall the app and reinstall it. Of course, much if what you entered needs to be reentered, but I would advise you to enter data only when you gave a viable Internet connection.

I have to give TripIt a thumbs down. The main reason I want an app like this is to send copies of my itinerary to my wife when I travel for business or family/friends when I go see them. UNFORTUNATELY in order to receive these notifications, a person has to be in my 'Inner Circle' and the only way that happens is if they are a TripIt member. What a underhanded way to artificially increase their user base... and of course Marketing will use this to state how they grow XX% each year and have XXX thousands of users. SO every time I want to travel to go see a friend or family member and I want to send them a copy of my itinerary, I have to get them to sign up on TripIt... NOT! I got TripIt Pro for free since my company uses Concur for handling expenses. Needless to say I won't be using it and I'll be uninstalling it from my phone.
