The Good

  • Increasing Completion Rates
  • Affordable In-State Tuition
  • Scholarship Offerings

Increasing Completion Rates

Utah Valley University provides an interactive, online dashboard that allows prospective students to see various enrollment and completions statistics. It is evident that the number of completions of CTE programs at UVU has slightly increased year over year from 2009 to 2016. Although this doesn't necessarily determine graduation rate, it is encouraging to see that more students are completing their CTE certificate or degree programs each year.

Affordable In-State Tuition

Undergraduate tuition for in-state students is $374 per credit hour. This would mean that a full-time class schedule for one semester would cost $2,420. The school also has equal tuition payment for 12 to 18 credit hours, which is a unique benefit; Utah Valley University doesn't charge additional tuition based on the number of full-time credit hours taken. Although tuition is affordable for resident students, it almost triples for non-resident students. The cost for non-resident students is $1,120 per credit hour or $7,500 for a full-time semester class schedule.

Scholarship Offerings

The UVU CTE lists numerous financial funding options for its students. Some of those include the Orem Pathways Scholarship, the Wasatch Pathways Scholarship, and Utah CTE Scholarships and Tuition Awards for graduating high school seniors. Utah Valley University also shares government PELL grants as a financial aid option along with the University's detailed scholarship website.

The Bad

  • Lacking Information
  • Unknown Graduate Job Placement
  • Admissions Deadlines

Lacking Information

A major downside of Utah Valley University's Career and Technical Education department is that it does not share detailed information on department admissions, graduation rate, or program statistics. Individual program pages are listed on the CTE website with information on degree requirements. However, if you are seeking more specific information and statistics, as a prospective student, it is suggested that you speak with an admissions counselor, or a major advisor for enrolled students. You can also request information as a future student and select the programs that you are interested in.

Unknown Graduate Job Placement

Utah Valley University's Career and Technical Education department does not share much information regarding job placement for its program graduates. Although the University does have a Career Development Center with numerous resources from career fairs to internship services to a job search website, it is not clear as to how adequately prepared its graduates are for the workforce without sharing a job placement rate. If you are considering applying to a Career and Technical Education program at UVU, this is something to ask your admissions or major advisor in order to better evaluating how UVU's technical graduates compare in the workplace.

Admissions Deadlines

If you are looking for a trade school that offers rolling admissions, then unfortunately, Utah Valley University is not a good option for you. Although it does offer rolling admissions for graduate-level programs, there are two admissions deadlines throughout the year, August 1 for fall semester and December 1 for spring semester. Even though admission deadlines are typical of a traditional university, this will require additional planning on your behalf to ensure application materials and fees are submitted on time.

The Bottom Line

If you are looking for a career or trade school with multiple offerings and scholarship options, then Utah Valley University is worth considering. UVU's CTE department provides unique programs and very affordable in-state tuition. It is also encouraging to see a continued increase in program completion each year. However, admissions are not done on a rolling basis with two offered deadlines each year. Also, CTE statistics such as job placement, graduation rates, as it relates to enrollment, and others are not shared openly on the school's website. You may need to seek a meeting with an admissions advisor or a major advisor to learn more.

I attended UVU for my freshman year. I was in the honors program and had a few negative experiences with close-minded professors. I know that others have had much better experiences than I have - but that's what happened to me. I really like that most classes are available online.
