Verbling is an online language learning platform founded in 2011 and based in San Francisco. It matches language learners to online tutors.
The platform includes more than 7,500 teachers and more than 60 language options. Each teacher sets their own price, and you can even book a free 30-minute trial to try out a teaching session.
You can browse through teachers' profiles, including ratings on several different skills, like Great with Beginners, Grammar Expert, Great for Medical Professionals, Tech Savy, Goes the Extra Mile, and Accent Reduction. Profiles also include how many sessions the tutor has completed, how many students they have worked with, their professional resume, a video introduction, and specialties like AP test prep, interview prep, or speaking practice.
Verbling can be accessed on desktop browsers or through Android and iOS devices. Users have the option to sign in with existing Facebook or Google credentials.
Verbling also offers a program for businesses.
Signing up with Verbling is a straightforward process. All you need to do is give your first name, email address, and specify which language you want to learn. Or you can easily sign up by using your Facebook or Gmail credentials.
Once that's complete, you'll be redirected to the Find A Teacher page. From here, you can scroll through the available teachers and find one that suits your learning style and needs.
As a student, finding a teacher on Verbling is simple. Where most people have trouble is finding a teacher that meets their exact needs. Luckily with Verbling, you can set and change the teacher filters to whatever you desire.
You can filter your results by the following standard categories:
Or you can also filter your results by teaching specialties, such as the following:
This is an excellent feature as it allows you to narrow your search results. Instead of searching through thousands of teachers, beginners can easily pick someone who will help them learn the basics, while intermediate and advanced students can find someone who can help target problem areas.
While other online learning platforms may require you to give out your phone number, email address, or additional personal information to your teacher, Verbling has an online classroom that's built directly into its website.
Here you can read messages from your teacher, view assigned homework, and access classroom materials.
Working as a language teacher with Verbling has numerous benefits. As a teacher, you set your own hourly rates, teach from the comfort of your own home or other location of your choice, easily manage your availability, teach full-time, part-time, or every once in a while, and more.
However, there are a few things Verbling requires of its teachers.
All Verbling teachers must have previous experience teaching in their target language. Candidates who don't have a certificate or verifiable teaching experience will not be accepted. While you do not have to be a native speaker, you are required to be a level C2 of the language you wish to teach. C2 is the highest level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
According to the CEFR website, CEFR C2 speakers can understand almost everything read or heard with ease, summarize information from various sources into a coherent presentation, and express themselves using precise meaning in complex scenarios. Currently, Verbling only allows its teachers to teach one language.
Candidates can expect to hear back from Verbling within two weeks of submitting their application.
When compared to other language learning sites, Verbling's teacher requirements are a bit middle of the road. For example, the qualifications to be an italki Professional Teacher are much more strict. italki requires applications to be certified to teach or already teach a language (professionally). You must then submit all certifications and licenses to italki, where they'll review your information and determine whether you're allowed to teach on the site.
However, if you compare the requirements to be a Community Tutor on italki, it's significantly less strict than Verbling. All you need to do to be a Community Tutor is be a native (or near-native) speaker and at least 18 years old.
Verbling's terms and conditions state, "All purchases at Verbling are final and cannot be refunded to the original form of payment. Purchased classes can be canceled and refunded as Verbling credit."
Additionally, all Verbling lessons expire six months after the purchase date. If you want to reactivate an expired lesson, you'll have to contact the Verbling Support Team.
Many students are drawn in by Verbling's free trial lesson. However, not all teachers on Verbling participate in the free trial. If the teacher you want doesn't offer a free 30-minute trial lesson, you'll have to pay $6.
We recommend Verbling to those who are serious about wanting to learn a new language. The language platform makes it easy to find and connect with certified teachers from all over the world. Verbling also offers an Online Classroom so students don't have to hand out their personal information.
Verbling is probably not the right choice for you if you simply want a more passive learning experience. Once you purchase a lesson from Verbling, you cannot get a refund.
We're on a mission to empower consumers to make the best decisions and connect confidently with companies that deserve their business.
