The Good

• Easy-to-use platform

We liked many of the different modules of UltiPro. This platform makes it easy to manage all of your payroll talent management, and HR under one cloud solution. Your business will have great-automated benefits if it selects the UltiPro system. Here are some of the features that were included in UltiPro:

• Human Resources
• Payroll Admin, Tax Management, and Compliance.
• Benefits ramped up to handle Obama's ACA.
• Talent Management to keep and attract workforces.
• Reporting, Workforce Analytics and Powerful Business Intel Tools.
• A great time clock, that is included with the UltiPro system.
• Recruiting, Onboarding, and Performance/Development.
• Mobile Solutions

We felt like UltiPro was the total package. The mobile solutions with the company were pretty great, even if we didn't get to see them demonstrated. With UltiPro mobile, you and your team can:

• Record met personal goals and achievements within your organization.
• View pay and pay history.
• Browse a timeline of work history with the company.
• Check retirement contributions.
• Integrate your contact information with social media.
• Clock in and out of shifts if your company has UltiPro Time Management (a digital punch).

With all these functions built into the mobile app, which is available on Android and iOS, we would like to see a bigger screenshot of the app, however. Another great feature of this platform was the ability to keep talent within your company. This is where the talent manager comes into play with UltiPro. Part of the importance of this product comes with its ability to:

• Let your managers assess performance and gather 360 feedback year round.
• Let employees develop the skills needed for personal growth and continued drive to excel your company's success.
• Understand retention risks for low-performing individuals and identify individuals who are vital to your company.
• Compel your employees to create flexible, personal development plans so that they have incentive to stay with your company.

There are also some powerful reporting features with UltiPro. Unfortunately, we didn't get a chance to see the type of reports in a screenshot or a demo. Here are the features that we read about on the UltiPro website:

• You can see your turnover trends and benefit costs as employees become eligible for healthcare.
• You can access commonly requested reports, including number of employees, recruitment, and average/mean salary.
• Get instant dashboards that are customizable.
• File signature-ready forms to meet legislative requirements.

Finally, we liked the partnerships that Ultimate Software has forged with third-party providers to bring us better solutions. Here are some of the things that we liked:

• Equifax, to determine past income and credit background of potential new hires for critical positions.
• Businesssolver, to help enhance benefits solutions with UltiPro.
• Cash Cycle Solutions (CCS), to better understand payroll cash flow.

We also had a few big customer names come up in our review of Ultimate Software:

• The MLB Network: This company, a sports entertainment network, needed to change its approach to payroll management and business process automation.
• Blyth, Inc.: This company, a direct seller, needed a full-range payroll provider to manage its exponential growth so that it could process payroll in a timely manner.

The Bad

We did have some concerns with Ultimate Software's UltiPro package. While we liked the modular approach to the application, we were missing real-time demos and screenshots of the application. Here are some things that we wanted to see:

• The type and format of the reports that managers within the organization can access.
• The functionality of the user interface.
• Employee retention tools and goal setting features.
• The function of the bulk editor within UltiPro's payment processing platform.

Also, the search feature of the site is a little bit clunky. We wanted to be able to search a support nexus on the website without pulling up website content. We also desired a dedicated support page and FAQ to help us find answers to our questions. Finally, we were looking to find prices for UltiPro. During our website visit, we were unable to find pricing information for UltiPro. We also wanted to know if we would be able to buy individual modules, much like Sage and Kronos lets its customers do. We wanted to know more about the document sharing and e-signature potential for the UltiPro talent management system, too. How much storage space does each user get? Can we share large PDFs of manuals, as well as performance reviews? Is it possible to e-sign certain documents before your first day of work? These are all questions that still remain unanswered.

The Bottom Line

We recommend Ultimate Software as an HR and payroll solution for small- and medium-sized businesses. They offer modular solutions that are also scalable. Your company might not need the entire UltiPro package and can pick from the different packages that are available. We feel like Ultimate Software delivers a great solution because their founder was originally with ADP, one of the major players in the HR software business. The third-party integrations make this platform work great. There are many tools, such as Equifax solutions, that are integrated into UltiPro to make it perform better for your business. We found that our biggest pet peeves with Ultimate Software was the lack of a demo, open and upfront pricing, and a clear understanding of the pricing structure per module within UltiPro.
