The Good

  • Great entertainment options
  • Discounts and deals available
  • Vacation protection

Entertainment Options

Carnival ships contain high-energy entertainment options, from Las Vegas styled revues to glitzy casinos, live bands and comedy shows. You can work out in the fitness center or take a run along a jogging track that encircles the outer portion of the ship. Families can watch movies on a giant outdoor screen or head to the waterpark. Tons of activities are available for children of all ages. Shopping includes themed stores for kids including a candy store.

Discounts and Deals

The Carnival Cruise's website offers features to help you plan your vacation and find the lowest prices and discounts on upcoming cruises. Senior discounts, military discounts and other incentives are available as well. If you find a better Carnival advertised deal somewhere else within two days of booking a cruise, Carnival will give you 110 percent of the difference in onboard credit.

Vacation Protection

Carnival tries to protect their guests when making a reservation through their cruise lines. They understand that some may need to utilize travel insurance. Carnival's Cruise Vacation Protection protects you with a 100 percent cash reimbursement of applicable penalties for cancellations due to specified reasons, such as:
  • Someone in your immediate family has an illness or injury, even if they aren't scheduled to travel with you.
  • You become ill and can't travel.
  • You are involuntarily terminated or laid off by an employer.
  • A severe weather watch or warning is issued and affects your travel to the port of embarkation.
  • A common carrier delay due to inclement weather causes you to miss more than 50 percent of your cruise vacation.
  • Or, if you must cancel for any other reason, our new "Cancel for Any Reason" feature will provide a future cruise credit equal to 75 percent of the applicable penalties.

Amenities

Carnival Cruise Lines feature six dining options on their ships which include seafood, burgers, steakhouse, Italian cuisine, Mexican cuisine, and a themed restaurant for kids called Dr. Seuss Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast. A jogging track encircles the outer part of the ship. Spa services, hair salon, and fitness center services are also available. Standard amenities on each Carnival ship also include:
  • 24 hour room service and room steward
  • Soft cozy linens and bathrobes
  • Nightly turndown services
  • Telephone and Television
  • Individual Climate Control
  • Personal Safe for Valuables

Destinations

Carnival Cruise ships travel to the Caribbean, Bahamas, Mexico, Europe, Alaska, Canada, New England, Hawaii, Bermuda, and Australia. Dates and times for when these cruise ships depart depend on a number of contributing factors. Pricing information for some of these destinations are broken down as follows:
  • Alaska: $697-$829 per person for a seven day trip
  • Caribbean: $159 per person for four days
  • Mexico: $169 per person for two days- $879 per person for thirteen days
  • Europe: $749 per person for eight days - $1,599 per person for thirteen days
Transportation to and from the cruise ship (back to the airport) is also included. Transportation from the airports in New York, Los Angeles, Orlando, and others are available. Cruises are available all year long and can extend anywhere from three to fourteen days.

The Bad

  • Not a relaxing environment
  • Other fees can stack up
  • Babysitting not included

Not for a Relaxing Getaway

For those who are looking for a quiet and relaxing getaway, Carnival Cruises may not be the ideal choice. Large crowds and boisterous entertainment options are ongoing throughout the length of the cruise. There are areas of the ship that are private retreats to get away from the bustle, but most options available on the ship are geared toward kids and teenagers and create loud noises that may be disturbing for those wanting to relax.

Other Fees

Offshore excursions cost extra and can be a bit pricey for families seeking an affordable vacation experience. Some of the activities onboard cost extra as well. It is too easy to rack up a large vacation bill with the extra costs involved. Most children's activities are free, but late-night party program fees and video game charges can add up quickly. On top of regular rates, other costs may include:
  • Taxes, fees, and port expenses range from $42.38 to $324.27
  • A $50 change fee per guest will be assessed for ship and/or sail date changes made prior to final payment due date.
  • Gratuities cost $12 per person per day and covers dining and room steward services

Babysitting is not Included

Because of the large number of people on board the cruise ships, individual attention may lack on occasion and it may be hard to get the attention of attendants should you need anything. Babysitting is available, but it costs extra. The rate for babysitting is $6 per hour, and $4 for each additional child. For those with infants, you will be required to provide staff with diapers and wipes for children under two years old.
gavel

The Bottom Line

Carnival cruises are designed for families seeking a high-octane and affordable vacation. Carnival Cruises is perfect for those seeking colorful and boisterous entertainment options in a laid-back party-style atmosphere. If you are looking for luxury options or personalized attention Carnival Cruises may not be the best choice for you. All in all we recommend Carnival Cruise Lines for having a great get-a-way experience.

This is a rust bucket. We went with them july 7, 2018. There was lots of rust everywhere you looked even on the mechanism that lowers the life boats. . Sewage backed up I KNOW into rooms on deck 7, deck 6, deck 10. The rooms were hot the AC system did not work as it should have. Someone came into our room to check the AC and told us that Carnival's policy is that the AC is working fine at 74 degrees'. Go into a small room with NO air moving at 74 an you will be sick...................... Customer service lied about excursions even printed lies to sell them making false statements about what was included in each of them.. Some of the liars there names are Luis and James who works at excursions desk, they even clamed to be managers.... Nikola who claimed to be manager at the customer service desk lied about them. Alexandau and Alina lied when we ask for a refund due to NOT going to a coral reef which was printed in the sales pitch and Nikola told us in person the morning of the excursion there was in fact a stop at a coral reef. Alexandau and Alina told us we would get refund the first thing the next morning..... They gave us the runaround for 36 hours before saying there would be NO refund due to the excursion went according to plan.... I GUESS THEY PLAN TO LIE AND CHEAT FROM THE BEGINNING... I mention that I could get many more that went on the excursion to tell them we DID NOT GO TO A CORAL REEF. Luis said he did not care if I took 100 people to speak to him he was going to charge my credit card for it anyway... Luis, when I told him I would stop payment with my credit card company said "they (the CC company) will call Carnival and they will tell the credit card company things went as they should have" ................ I wish I had have looked at Carnival's reviews before we went because I saw others where Carnival stole from them also in the same way they did us... I knew we were in trouble when I saw all the rust on the ship that Carnival was and is BOTTOM OF THE BARREL when it comes to cruise lines....... Tell all of your friends to stay away from Carnival anything............ I guess that is why the are a little bit cheaper that other lines........ Remember the Carnival that stopped cold dead on a cruise and had to be towed back to port that took a week or more with NO power people sick throwing up, burning up.........

I was a die hard Carnival cruiser until my last cruise on the Valor. The food was sub-par, not the wonderful food from the past (overcooked lobster?). All the food places would shut down early and all you could get was a short list of sandwiches. The entertainment was sub-par, Several clubs were just sitting empty (was told there is a Jazz club, not!), three out of the four comics were not very good, piano player was monotone and all songs sounded the same. Were told we could not bring a drink, just bought, into a 35+ mixer where 16 year old girls were allowed to sit and drink alcohol that was bought for them. I was embarrassed for promoting Carnival over other cruise lines to my first-time cruiser friend. She was unimpressed and will never cruise again. If this is the current trend for Carnival, I doubt very much I will be cruising with Carnival again.

We sailed Sept 25, 2015 on the Carnival Valor and it was the worst cruise ever. The ship was dirty, a sewage smell on the boat, the food was cold and lousy and the workers were rued and our ship director and entertainment stunk. You contact guest care for Carnival with your complaints and concerns and all you get back from them is I apologize and we will look into it, piss poor if you ask me. Please research your ship before you book it and be aware if they switch your ship. The Valor is not what we booked for. I have since read the reviews since we have been home and let me tell you, they are terrible week after week. So Carnival does nothing to change things.

We have cruised with Carnival 3 times. Our first 2 cruises were fun, food was good, enjoyed them. Our last cruise became pure hell. After getting to the final check in to get our cards (we were gold members), they realized after going through 3 check points we were at the wrong ship. After escorting us to the right ship and assuring us everything would be ok, our luggage never made it. We were going to Jamaica and Grand Cayman, with no clothes except the jeans and t-shirts we had on. After pitching a fit we were called to the principals office the next day to get our hands slapped and told if there were any more problems we would be put off the ship. We were offered a 20% discount in the gift shop which doesn't even carry bathing suits and a free laundry coupon, for what laundry I still don't know. We were also told we could dress casual in main dining room. Needless to say our first stop in Jamaica was not the beach but to find bathing suits. When we arrived back in Miami as we were disembarking we were held by staff till 2 officers came up to us wanting us to sign letters stating we would never cruise with carnival again. We laughed at them and told them to send it to our attorney. The officers were rude, and we then had to wait for them to find our luggage after we waited for over an hour in port. Good thing we had booked 2 days in Key West upon our return. We would love to give Carnival another shot, but are very skeptical.

They do have some ups & downs on any cruise lines. We have been on 5 cruises with Carnival. The first one was on the Liberty. The crew was great, activities director was always around meeting & greeting , but could not go on to many excursions because of medical problems . Next cruise had people offering me pot to smoke on deck 10. I thought where is security. Another cruise we were able to smoke on our balcony & now you can't all because someone was careless with ashes. I always had a empty bottle with water in it for ashtray. Another cruise was nothing but gamblers. If you wanted a machine you had to get on it by 6:00 in the morning and couldn't leave or you would loose it . What they need is more for the handi-capped. Got off the Breeze and they were loading about 20 video games for the kids & redoing the teen area.

I have to say that this cruise is NOT FAMILY FRIENDLY AT ALL.....It is only for those cruisers who are out to drink and party the whole cruise away. As for kids programs, if you are there to party and just have your kids babysat, then this is the cruise for you. If you are a family who is hoping to have family activities together, DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY OR YOUR TIME. The only thing onboard the cruiseship to do together with your child is swim, and use the water slides. When a parent tries to go to the child area to participate in an activity, they forbid it. Really....this is ridiculous. For example, let's build a volcano for three days and watch it erupt, but parents can't be part of that. The only family activities with the kids club was the digital scavenger hunt and the Beary Cuddly activity (which is extra). The thing that really worried me about the kids program was even though they are supposed to check the kids out when they leave, they tried to send the wrong child to the desk for me when I went to pick mine up. Just think, if my child was too young to speak or had trouble speaking, it could have been a HUGE PROBLEM. :( Yes she went back, but I pointed this out to the staff. If you have an older parent with you who is in a wheelchair, forget having easy access to anything. Even the hot tub did not have stairs for them to get into, even in the adult serenity area. The pool had no access at all for them. Even when I asked about shore excursions I was told that nothing was wheelchair accessable. GUESS WHAT, WHEN I BOOKED THIS CRUISE THIS IS NOT WHAT I WAS TOLD. :( You have to go way out of the way to get an elevator to go to dinner or get anywhere else on the ship. Forget wanting to play put put golf with them, because guess what, no elevator to the sun deck. One good thing was the Seuss at Sea program, but even this was only three activities during the week which lasted only about an hour each, and one of the programs was an additional charge. The water onbard the ship tasted like they obtained it from the toilet bowl, IT WAS AWFUL. The food was hit and miss with the best thing onboard being the hamburgers and the ice cream. The pizza was like cardboard with no taste. Even the sit down dining area left much to be desired with the quality of the food. My husband ordered prime rib and it tasted like rubber bands and had more fat than meat. The sad thing is that other cruise lines like NCL and Disney have family acitivites where the whole family participates and there is a different show every night. They have wheelchair accessable programs and excursions every place that they go. The only two shows on this cruise were presented on two nights out of the whole cruise. Every other night if you don't drink or gamble, forget it, nothing to do. Let's just say, carnival will never get my money again. NCL AND DISNEY, I SHOULD'VE KNOWN TO ONLY GO WITH YOU. The last time my husband and I sailed Carnival was probably the last time we will sail them. We took a Caribbean cruise on Carnival Liberty in May, 2013. We booked a junior suite and it was very, very spacious but we were disappointed that the sofa was covered in cheap vinyl and had the overall appearance of a motel 6. Our biggest disappointment was the staff. We normally get to know our wait staff in the dining room and have tons of fun. The staff on this cruise talked among themselves and ignored the guests. I had to repeatedly ask for simple things such as silverware. No one ever brought my coffee after numerous requests. I tried to be patient and kind but we were ignored. The overall attitude of the crew seemed to be "just do the minimum and get these people out of my face" rather than being the usual friendly folk they are. I attribute this to management. There is nothing wrong with Carnival ships, they are Vegas glitzy and made to encourage fun. The fun we had on this ship was that we made for ourselves. I hope that the attitude of the crew has changed on Liberty. I would love to go back one day but with so many other wonderful lines to choose from, maybe not.

We took Carnival Splendor June 17th 2015 because last year we were on this ship and it was wonderful.. This year was not so great and a lot of people we met on the ship had complaints. My first issue was with Bradley at the front desk. If there was an award for the most rude and nasty of the ship, Bradley would have won. Also Eduardo when getting of at the islands talked to guests of the ship as if they were 3 years old. Myself and a few others had to put him in his place. On the Lido desk they ran out of food and you had to ask 3 or 4 times for them to bring more of an item out. My thing is when you see something getting low refill it. Common sense. For breakfast in the dinning room, the staff they had in the morning really didnt care to be there. You order something like egg and they bring you a bagel, ask for ketchup they bring you an ounce.. This was our third cruise with carnival and the First one was bad and now the third one. I guess you get what you pay for. We most likely will not be cruising with this cruise line again!

Took our First Cruise with friends that was on their fourth, On carnival Ecstasy, The Porter (Ivan) was great, I'd give him and his staff a10, however that is only a small part of the cruise. The food was ok, when you could get it. Long lines and then picked over. One night we had Shrimp and lobster, Great, but a guy sitting next to us had no less than 10 lobster tails. the next morning a lady ask for extra bacon for her friend at her table and the server would NOT let her take anymore, excuse me but I didn't realize we had a pig shortage. Couldn't get anything to drink at the inside buffet except tea or lemonade, passion fruit / OJ, was out side but not inside. The ice cream machine (ONLY ONE) aboard ship was always out or was melted to the point of chocolate milk. The entertainment, Spike Davis was OUTSTANDING, he was the best part of the whole thing. the excursion was Bad. we did the electric bikes, snorkeling. the bikes where junk, my back tire was about to fall off, and our friends bike took off when the key was turned on. Our guide for the excursion took real good care of us and was a great guy, the snorkeling was GREAT, but only about 15 - 20 minutes in the water, Our cabin was on the Rivera deck and we had extra furniture in our room, with cramped quarters anyway this really made things tight. If you ask me if I'll take another cruise with Carnival? I don't know. I talked to them about these and other complaints and all they wanted to talk about was booking me for another cruise, I doubt I'd do it again unless they make good on the nightmare one we just had. we left port in Miami June 15 - 19th, 2015, on Ecstasy.

We took 2 Carnival cruises. The first was not too bad and we had fun with our friends. The second was horrible, even with the same friends. The crew was rude and walked away when asked a question and refused to help load up the wet towels. Dinner was a horror show. Food was aweful and it took an hour just to get my salad. The entertainment was not existent and we will never do Carnival again. However, we are getting ready for our next cruise. It will be our 67th cruise on Disney and we will NEVER stray again and are booked with Disney thru cruise #70. Carnival is NO comparison to Disney. They are the best on the 7 seas.

My very first cruise ever. A two year cancer patient and in remission not quite a year. So I treat myself with my two grandsons with a Carnival Victory cruise. Very costly for the three of us. Supposed to have 2 twin beds and a trundle bed or whatever. To my dismay, we had 2 twins beds and a 2 seated couch with a mattress on it. I'm 5'3" and I wouldn't fit on it. Went through it for 3 nights of my 5 day cruise with neck hurting and ask our guy taking care of our room for a bed. He was helpful and brought us a roll away bed. We were climbing over top of one another to get to the restroom. I called Carnival about it and they want to give me 15% off next cruise which I doubt I would ever take with them again. Or $245. refund! I paid approximately $2400. for the cruise. Something don't add up and I have pictures of what we endured. They don't want them. Sadly, I talked to another lady on the cruise from Australia and she was done the same way. How many people do they do this to????? Very upset!!!

we had a very bad experience,we took a cruise,or should i say we booked a cruise for that date ,we got on the ship 3days later(mar 30th,we were suppose to get on mar 28th) .. due to plane departure, and carnival cruise lines,we purchased transfers, when we got to miami ,we called and they said they would send someone and never did, about a half an hour later we got a taxi, we were 3 minutes late ,After extensive travel ,getting on 7 planes ,we finally got on.some at our expense we got on ship at Domonic Republic on tues, which made it a 5 day instead of 8 day, we bougt insurance.we only got back 500 apiece, which was our out of pocket we expences, We contacted carnivale .they would do nothing, we have traveled carnivale lmany times,we probably wont ever again! We didnt expect a full refund, but we at least thought, they would offer another cruise at a discounted price,

Took 6 carnival cruises last year....the Liberty is the best! However, the changes to the gold level have left us less than pleased. First as a reward for multiple cruises we were gifted with a drink, with limited time to use it, we managed. That was taken away and we were rewarded with a bottle of water instead. This was in addition to the cocktail party to which we were invited. Now the party has been taken away and we are back to having a "free" drink with stipulation that it be used on the last evening....what the heck, it wasn't great using the first drink as it had to be morning or seaday brunch, and now that the drink is back and the party is gone, we have only one evening in which to enjoy the drink. Think the bottom line is getting in the way of customer service and encouraging returning guests.

Our experience with Carnival?? I will NEVER take a Carnival ship again!!!! We are 4 star mariners with Holland America--did they change when Carnival bought them??? Yes, the entire cruise line changed. No more personal experiences with the crew, no more Holland nights, nothing personal as before. When we cruised with Carnival?? One cruise we would not even go to dinner due to the mess of teen agers on the cruise. Another cruise we could not even get into a bar due to the under age kids drinking in the bars. Holland America we love and cruise 2 x a year---do we like it as much as we did when we first started cruising with them?? No, not since Carnival cheapened their style, we will stick with Holland and never ever cruise on Carnival again!!!

Our experience was not a good one by far. Our room was located right above the engine motor of the ship. It was Latino week which we know nothing about their heritage. We should have been told of this. The shows were so bad. Two different shows(musicals) same performers almost identical shows! The food was not at all like I expected. We were so happy our 7 days were over!! I must say our first cruise was great but this one fell way below our expectations! No more Carnival for us!

We went on Carnival Valor out of Port Canaveral. This is an old ship, not attractive, not fun. Hated the pool and spas in the adults area. Being on vacation was great, but the shows were mediocre, food was great. We got the cheers program, but our drinks seemed weak. Most days we drank at least 10 drinks and never got drunk... kinda of weird. This boat is the kind of ship that should only be used for 3 and 4 day getaways for a really cheap price.

Sailed on the "Splendor" last week. The ride was great, the food so-so, the crew members (except our cabin steward) were mostly not helpful. The mattress in our cabin looked like a walrus had slept on it for a year - it needed to be replaced some time ago. The interior decorations were the ugliest I have seen on any of the 16 cruise ships I have been on. The morning of our return to New York found all of the coffee machines to be down with the exception of 2 with de-café coffee.

I was on the Carnival Victory August 31st -Sept 5th, if was the worst cruise that I have ever taken. If was eleven of us, we asked for our rooms to be close together because we were traveling with teenagers, well that didn't happen I was so disappointed, we also asked to be downstairs at dinner, that didn't happen, the housekeeping was terrible, I could go on and on, but every time I think about my vacation from HELL I still get angry. we spent too much money for what we got, The Victory is a OLD ship, I was not happy at all.

Dining room service was awful. Raw steak, no dinner for some guests , incorrect items, wait staff left. This happened on many occasions. We were unable to get pool towels or chairs because there were not enough towels. On several days I gave up trying to get lunch because of the crowds. Tables were dirty. There was not enough staff to accommodate the large number of people. My children never want to go on another carnival cruise. Servers were rude 75% of the time.

I hated Carnival. I was lost so many times it was disgusting. Other ships I was on you were able to walk from the back of the boat to the front on the same floor and this you could not, you had to go to another floor to get where you wanted to go. I will never go on carnival again.

I enjoy cruising with carnival. My husband and I have sailed 14 times with carnival. We enjoy the food, entertainment, relaxing, and the ports are good. However, recently the debarkation "STINKS". Vip was not given priority, people that paid to leave early left first.. I heard that one person missed their plane flight due to the mess.

The only thing I can say about Carnival is that they cater to a younger crowd. Last time I took a Carnival cruise, the music in the theater hurt my ears, and the screaming children irritated me. Cruised with Carnival many times but the last cruise was a night mare . Boston Canada in 2012 Haven't cruised Carnival since. It started with transfers to the ship waited at the airport 3 hours. Got to the ship just in time for muster station. Went down hill from there. Never again.

The food was NOT GOOD ! There was nothing to do but gamble. The one and only time I have been on a cruise and it will be my last.

Carnival Sunshine is the worst ship I have been on in the Carnival fleet. Overcrowded, bad food choices in the dining room.

Las Vegas on a boat. If you want a drunken party this the the cruise for you. If you have a family, don't be swayed by the cheap prices, you get what you pay for...
