Zipcar began providing rental cars with hourly and daily rates in Boston, Massachusetts in 2000. Zipcars are now available at hundreds of US locations in 43 states and Washington DC. As an alternative to owning a car, a sharing program is a step up for those who want more autonomy than provided by ride-shares like Uber and Lyft, and the ability to keep to their own schedule and avoid the crowds on public transit.

To join, each Zipcar member must pay a one-time application fee and choose between the option of a per month or per year membership fee. Drivers must be 21 or older unless joining a university-affiliated program at one of 570+ US campuses where college students age 18-20 will also be accepted. A valid driver's license and approved driving record are also needed.

Once you receive your Zipcard in the mail (in 3-7 days), you can start reserving and renting vehicles. Hourly and daily vehicle rates are available and vary per vehicle. Occasional trip and commuter options, as well as one-way rentals, are offered.

Availability

Zipcar is one of the largest car-sharing companies in the world. Zipcar currently operates in ten countries and 43 U.S. states. Within the United States, they have vehicles available in 350+ cities and on 570+ college campuses, making it easy to rent a car for an appointment, trip, or errands. You just pick it up and drop it off in a specially marked Zipcar parking spot at an appointed lot location. This service is convenient for college students and those who are looking to avoid the costs of car ownership, whether for financial or environmental reasons.

For example, in Los Angeles alone, there are approximately 18 Zipcar rental locations. In each of these locations, there are 1-25 cars in the lot available for use.

View Car Sharing Providers By Location

Reservations

Drivers can reserve Zipcars for a minimum of 1 hour and a maximum of 14 days. Customers can drive Zipcars for a max of 180 miles for every 24-hour period you have the car. For any miles traveled over the 180-mile cap, there is a $.45 per mile charge.

With this sharing service, it's easy to reserve a car when you need it in advance or at the last minute. Book online through your account or via the free iPhone or Android apps. Once you go to find your rental car in one of the designated parking spots, you simply use your Zipcard to unlock the vehicle by holding it to the card reader on the car's windshield.

Insurance

Members receive insurance coverage as a part of their membership and fees. The coverage is a little different, depending on your age and when you joined.

All members under age 21 are covered by the minimum financial responsibility limits for the jurisdiction where an accident occurs.

For members age 21 and up:

  • Members who joined August 1, 2018, or later will receive liability coverage up to the minimum financial limits in the state where an accident occurs.
  • For members who joined March 1, 2015, through July 31, 2018, a 100/300/25 plan is in place. Members will pay $1,000 deductible fee in damages per incident. The main insurance coverage Zipcar provides is (100/300/25) third-party auto liability coverage:
    • $100,000 in bodily injury per person
    • $300,000 bodily injury maximum coverage
    • $25,000 for property damage
  • Members who joined prior to March 1, 2015, receive $300,000 combined single limit coverage per accident.

Features & Fees

Zipcar is part of the new "sharing economy" that is becoming widely popular and looked at by the media. Zipcar's fleet is available for use 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Users, if located in a service area, will be able to receive help and make reservations at any point in time. When you become a Zipcar member, the fees cover gas (via a gas card), insurance, and 24/7 roadside assistance at 1-866-4ZIPCAR for customer service if you have a problem.

Zipcar also offers a 30-day trial for new customers. If you decide the service is not for you, they refund the membership fee (but not the application fee).

The approximate price for service in participating locations breaks down as follows:

  • A one-time application fee of $25
  • A membership fee of
    • $7+ monthly fee for the aptly named Monthly Plan, or
    • $70 annual fee for the Occasional Driving Plan, or
    • A special pre-paid Extra Value Plan is available in certain cities, offering a prepaid amount each month towards your membership and vehicle rental fees.
  • Vehicles cost about $9+ per hour or $73+ per day to rent. (You can reserve for as little as 1 hour or up to 14 days.)
  • Late fees start at $50, plus another $50 for every hour you are late.
  • If you drive more than 180 miles during a 24 hour period, you will be charged $0.45 each for additional vehicle miles traveled.

The Zipcar mobile app was named one of the 50 best iPhone apps for 2011 by Time Magazine. Today, many people find the app easy-to-use, but a little plain.

The Bad

  • Additional Fees
  • Limitations

Additional Fees

As a non-traditional car rental service, if members need to use a Zipcar frequently for entire days, the price can get expensive. Additionally, if you go over 180 miles in one day, they start to add on charges by the mile. The overall costs have kept some from using Zipcar.

If you are planning on renting a car for a full day or an extended trip, the rates may exceed standard car rental rates available from a daily rate rent-a-car company like Avis Budget, Enterprise or Hertz.

A Zipcar membership allows you an easy rental process and way to unlock the car that traditional rental companies don't have. So, you will have to decide whether the ease and familiarity with your Zipcar carshare are more important than the full-day prices available at other companies specializing in full-day rather than hourly rate plans. You may just want to double-check before leaving on a week-long trip.

Limitations

When you use Zipcar, the only features available include:

  • Gas
  • Roadside Assistance

Zipcar offers a variety of brands and models to drive, but that doesn't mean a customer will be able to rent them. The styles they offer include convertibles, cargo vans, hatchbacks, compact, minivans, suburbans, hybrids, luxury cars, and other premium vehicles. For instance, in L.A. there are 34 models that you can choose from whereas other cities have fewer options. If you want to drive a specific make or model, you can use the site or the Android or iPhone app to browse by model or style.

gavel

The Bottom Line

With Zipcar's wide reach in the US and easy vehicle accessibility with the Zipcard membership card, allowing you to skip the rental counter, purchasing a membership is a good investment if it is available in your area.

As well, if you are able to commit to an annual membership payment plan, you save about 15 percent by paying up front.

Locals who occasionally need to drive for errands or a commute will definitely benefit from using the Zipcar app. If you are interested in car sharing, we definitely recommend Zipcar.

I have used Zipcar many times in the past and enjoyed the service, even though the prices were sometimes steep and the quality of cars was declining. However, I had a bad experience this past year which has prompted me to cancel my membership. I took out a car in June 2020 to drive around town, no problem (or so I thought). In late August 2020 I receive a bill for over $300 from Zipcar and an email explaining I received a moving violation. Digging into this, it seems I was charged for a photo enforced moving violation which was incorrect (the school zone speed limit was not in effect at the time). Zipcar received the violation in June, paid the fee without consulting me, and then waited over TWO MONTHS to charge me. At this point I was no longer able to contest the incorrect ticket with my local government (I tried). When I contacted Zipcar's customer service representative, they were overall confused and offered no idea what I could do, as my credit card had already been charged. I was told they would escalate and get back to me, but I never heard anything again. I contacted Zipcar again, and got no response. First, this is against their stated policy. They need to notify customers of these violations when they receive them (as their online policy says they will) so that the customer can contest and/or handle the fee directly. Second, this situation is absurd. Why did it take over two months to notify and charge me? Third, their customer service is non-existent. Why tell me you will escalate and then not do it? Why not respond to customers reaching out? Why not even offer an apology or understanding, let alone try to make this situation right? I feel that Zipcar has completely disrespected me. They took my $300 already, so they have no incentive to listen to me or to try to understand what I am saying. Without any leverage, they don't care about their customers at all.

Conciergement Dallas, TX

I initially signed up with ZipCar back in 2015, with the Dallas, TX pick up location closest to me being at a train station, easily accessible. Since then the quality of cars, availability and customer service has declined drastically the past four years. My original pick up location has gone months without cars and then when there was a (one) lone vehicle to reservice, it was damaged and dirty. The next closest location (not as easily accessible and further away) the cars are ALWAYS filthy! I've taken pictures of everything from masks, food, grime, trash, dirt and more left in the vehicle. I've repeatedly for the past 3-4 years asked for someone to contact me regarding service and have yet to hear back from a Dallas representative. Nowadays, I refuse to refer anyone to ZipCar due to extremely poor service and low quality vehicles. I use ZipCar for the convenience and if I'm lucky enough to get a vehicle when needed, I spend the first 10 minutes of the reservation sanitizing the vehicle because based on the vehicles in this part of the Dallas market - sanitation is not being done! I'm writing today because I'm at my wit's end after receiving notice my reservation location has been moved! No prior notice to ask, just that the reservation has changed and if I have an issue, call in. WTH??? If you know in advance, then ZipCar, where are you market representatives who should be re-routing vehicles when necessary or at least contacting customers prior to changing a reservation location? Why would you assume the location would be accessible to the customer? Why would you assume the customer would want THAT particular location? The two stars only come because the customer service reps (poor souls) who have had to answer the calls from my being upset and explaining to them it's not their fault don't deserve to have to deal with situations that should be handled from another department such as an escalation team. Even UBER has a dedicated team that handles customer loyalty based on the number of trips you take. Why won't ZipCar offer better customer service to long-time customers and work on improving the customer experience?

I signed up for ZipCar a while ago and I've never used the service. The times in which I needed to rent a car, they are not available. It's likely I could have gotten these with a reservation weeks ahead of schedule, but I don't often need a car and when I do I don't have days to plan the trip. I would not recommend ZipCar in Seattle (at least not in Queen Anne/Belltown); cars are only available when no one needs 'em. Also, I was never given a warning that I was paying for this service for 2 years that I've never used. A company of this size should be a bit more customer focused. I get that there's a financial incentive to having inactive customers pay annual fees, but that's a poor way to treat customers.

Where do I start? I’ve taken some punches from Zipcar in the past - dinged up cars I’ve spent 10 minutes documenting before leaving the lot so they don’t pin it on me, dirty cars, very low gas, paid for gas because there is no gas card and then not reimbursed. List goes on. But this one takes the cake. I have about 4 hrs between checking out of my hotel and jumping on a flight home from LAX. Happens to be my Step-Mom’s 80th bday and I’m in town so I call the night before to say I’d love to take her to lunch while I’m in limbo waiting for my flight. She says that would make her day and I book my Zipcar near LAX. Get to Avis rental lot where Zipcar says Ira (my car) would be parked and there is no car where the pindrop indicates. Actually, there is no Zipcar lot - just a twisted area of linked fences, concrete barricades and apparently it’s an Avis employee lot of cars. Had to ask an Avis guy where’s the Zipcars. He says they moved lots and points 300 yards across the Avis lot. Would have been nice to have the right location but I pushed honk on my app at this point just to be sure he’s not wrong. A message popped up saying the previous driver had not yet returned the car. No worries - will take me some time to navigate a labyrinth of bumper to bumper parked rentals, bustling Avis shuttles and abandoned construction areas as I’m walking in the indicated direction. I was alerted that I shouldn’t be walking in this area by a nice Avis guy who gives me a lift in the Avis car he’s taking to the wash. I tip him $5 when he gets me to a Zipcar looking lot (barely) and I jump out. Side note - he says no one ever tips him. He deserved it for at least making that portion of my story the most customer service I received all day. During my commute I called Zipcar and was placed on hold for 15 mins. Once I’m at the correct lot I honk again and try the unlock button on the app. Nothing - same message. Finally a Zipcar agent answers my call. She says nothing can be done but the driver says he’ll be back soon. At this point it’s been 1/2 hr and I tell my Step-Mom I might not make it. 10 minutes go by. No car. I get on the Avis shuttle and decide I’ll just head to the airport. About a minute on the shuttle and I’m notified that my reservation has started and can’t be cancelled. I ask the shuttle driver if I can get off, which is ironically right where I was first directed by Zipcar where my car would be. I walk the 300 yards back again. This time there is no nice Avis guy around to give me another ride. Finally get to the car at 50 minutes after the reservation start time. Hustle to my Step-Mom’s to have a quick 30 minute “bite” instead of a long lunch to catch up. Return the car on time and get to the airport where I settle in and check my Zipcar account. Here is the kicker. . . Zipcar charged me for my original pick up time and says I returned it 2 hours late. Charged me those 2 hrs and a $100 late fee. I almost had to laugh because I did try to extend my ride a 1/2 hr to have a little more time at lunch but they said someone else had booked it. No one got in the 15 minutes I was waiting near by at the shuttle stop so things went wrong on many levels. Wish my customer rep was more on it and empathetic. Wish Zipcar would update location lots when they move then 300 yards away from the spot they mark on the reservation. Wish I had a 64 Impala.

I had ones of the worst customer service. My initial booking was at one location, But the car wasn't in the location when I reached there. I waited for a while before calling up the customer care center to give the person some time to return their car. The customer care person I spoke to after having waited in line for 15 mins offered to change our reservation since the car hadn't arrived. But since no one could confirm the arrival of the car , the Zipcar representative offered to change the reservation to another location. All this happened , and it was none of my fault but I was ended up charged a non-refundable 1 hour charge because of this mix up and the reservation was postponed 1 hour. I called up the customer care as soon as I received the invoice asking about this and the rued representative told me that she will open a ticket/ complaint regarding this issue and that I would be contacted shortly. But I was not contacted regarding this till now , even though I called twice and spoke to the rudest of them after my initial complaint and every single time I was told a new ticket has been opened. Its been 1 month since this incident and I haven't received any response their side. This is the worst customer service I have ever witnessed and for something that was 100% out of my control especially after what they have put me through to demand for the money that belongs to me.

Was a member between 2013-2017 and would say during that time it was a 5 star company. Was happy with it and a satisfied costumer. Got a car in 2017 and cancelled my membership. Fast forward to October 2019 and my car has been sold so I thought I'd once again go back to Zipping. HUGE Difference. Prices here in Toronto have more than doubled in just 2 years. Literally MORE than doubled and the helpfulness of the call center is about 1\5th of what it was. Very very disappointed. Will be cancelling my membership for good after this month. Too bad. Was a great thing once upon a time.

Poor customer services, speaking to a call centre (who knows where). Can't answer basic questions without following a script of questions. The website is unclear about whether a zip car member can use the zip flex scheme under the same membership. I was charged for a new tyre despite the damage occurring before my reservation. The car is frequently no in the bay designated and I've ended up searching out the car in a new location. Difficulty parking the car back in its designated bay (particularly if this was a temporary position).

Very disappointing. I booked a luxury car only later in the day to be emailed that it was not available and a totally different car( undesirable) was available 1hr& 30 mins away from my destination! - that would add three hours both ways on to my rental.. if I did not have to drop off my belongings at my home and drop off a kid at destination it might have worked?? What happened to the original business model - it worked this is rubbish!

Zipcar is good for the convenience and lack of hassle that the major car rental companies put you through. However, the cars are often dirty on the inside (i.e. food crumbs, dirt, leaves, etc.) Because they don't clean them often or after every use).

With about an hour still left on my reservation, I was accused of having overstayed the reservation. Accordingly, the car was time locked, and I could not open or enter it. I am now awaiting a promised tow to get the car returned.

My first experience, the car had a broken windshield wiper and the knob with the controls fell off. The inside of the car smelled musty and the seats were stained. However, ti was easy to apply and find an available car.
