Founded in March 2009, Uber is one of the big names in the new field of peer-to-peer ride-sharing. With an easy-to-use app and huge coverage areas, Uber allows users to get a ride at any time with a few clicks on a smartphone.

Uber has grown to offer services throughout the United States and in 58 countries worldwide, helping to change the way we view the ride-sharing business model. It also has fed the craving for customized service that is so prevalent today.

Below, we look at some of the main concerns about Uber’s ride-sharing services, including price, speed, safety, and user-friendliness. Keep reading for pros and cons, plus Uber reviews from real customers.

The Good

  • Availability
  • Price Estimates
  • Usability

Availability

Uber is undoubtedly one of the most widespread ride-sharing services, meaning that users can rely on Uber offers in more locations than other services. Uber is available in 58 countries and more than 260 US cities. Additionally, that the mobile app is easy to use, and riders have more control over the type and size of vehicle that picks them up. Here is a breakdown of different fare options:

  • uberBLACK: Private high-end black car rides for 1-4 passengers, with professional drivers.
  • uberPOOL: Uber's carpool matching option. You can carpool with other riders going in the same direction for a cheaper fare.
  • uberSELECT: Private high-end luxury rides for 1 to 4 passengers with high-rated drivers.
  • uberSUV: Private luxury SUV rides with professional drivers for up to 6 people.
  • uberTAXI: Private rides in local taxi cabs.
  • uberX: Private rides for 1-4 passengers in a comfortable sedan. The basic Uber ride option.
  • uberXL: Private SUV or van rides for up to 6 passengers.
  • uberWAV: Private rides in wheel-chair accessible vehicles with drivers who are certified to safely assist people with disabilities. Currently testing in Chicago, Washington DC, New York City, and Philadelphia.

Price Estimates

While prices fluctuate by location, time, and car preference, Uber always allows you to get price estimates before you commit to your trip. These estimates are based on the expected time and distance of your ride. Tipping is also available through the app, but there is no required tipping fee. On average, the cost to use a basic car (UberX) is as follows:

  • Cost per mile of $1.48
  • Min. Ride fee of $1.70
  • Safe Rides Fee of $1.00
  • Cancellation fee of $10

Usability

Uber is designed for usability. Since reservations, ride information, payment, and reviews are all in the app, riders have a hassle-free experience. Additionally, the app now offers a "Split Fare" option, making riding with others easy. To use Uber, download the app on your device and register. After registration, simply open the app and enter in your destination to request a ride. Users can also choose their preferred driver and car. When a driver arrives, users will get a notification on their device. After the ride, pay in-app and review the experience. On average, Uber riders wait 4 minutes and 16 seconds for their driver to pick them up. When reserving a ride, users receive an Estimated Time of Arrival for their convenience. Uber has a reasonable wait time (an average of about four minutes) and all payment, driver rating, etc. is available through the app. With such convenience, it's no wonder more and more people are choosing Uber over traditional taxicab services.

The Bad

  • Surge Pricing
  • Independent Contractors

Surge Pricing

Of course, with the good comes some bad. Uber is notorious for their surge pricing, which raises the fare for rides at certain times of the day or during periods of high demand. While this is good for Uber drivers, who are independent contractors, it can be inconvenient for riders looking for a cheap lift.

Independent Contractors

There have been riders who have complained about their driver and their qualifications. It is also important to remember that users have the ability to rate and view the ratings of their drivers. As of Spring 2016, all drivers were independent contractors rather than direct employees. As such, Uber reviews applicants for the following:

  • DUI or other drug related driving violations or severe infractions
  • History of reckless driving
  • Fatal accidents
  • Sexual offenses
  • Violent crimes
  • Hit and runs
  • Resisting or evading arrest
  • Gun related violations
  • Driving without insurance or suspended license charge in the past 3 years

During the screening process, the following tools are used:

  • National Sex Offender Registry screen
  • Social Security Trace (a lifetime-long record)
  • County courthouse records going back 7 years for every county of residence
  • Federal courthouse records going back 7 years
  • Multi-State Criminal Database going back 7 years
  • Motor Vehicle Records (past and present)

The Bottom Line

Whether you live in one of the cities Uber covers or you are just visiting, you can enjoy fast pick-up times and cheap rates.

The widespread availability and the customizable user experience have helped the Uber app to become one of the big names in ridesharing, offering customers an alternative to the pricey and inconvenient taxi industry. Users can choose a ride that emphasizes their needs: number of seats, cheaper price, or luxury experience.

I've used Uber pretty much exclusively for over 6 years and now will be switching to Lyft. I was quoted ~$30 for a trip, which I agreed to but then Uber charged me over $55!! I disputed it on their useless "help" email and they claimed it was because it was a high demand time. a) it was 8:30pm on a Monday night so BS and b) it doesn't seem legal to just change the charge with no actual rationale. I didn't change the destination, there was no wait time for the driver, and there was no traffic. Obviously I'm disputing this through my credit card company and blasting this review everywhere I can think of.

My rating is 4.84, I’ve been with uber over 3 years and I am a platinum member so the fact that I am not able to get a ride pass and or real discounts considering how often I ride with uber and how expensive the rides actually are I am disappointed and saddened with this company. It honestly makes me feel like this is a company that only cares for money solely. If you look at my history it is seen how often I use the app and how much I am spending. The ride pass is for selected customers in my area. Also uber does not keep up with their drivers. I have been in dirty cars and have been in one incident with a driver and another almost hit a cop car!!! Every time I get in a car it is almost always something honestly and it’s tiring having to always reach out, it seems like they’d accept anyone to work for them. Then the drivers never come to my exact location and they blame the app, always. If it’s the app why isn’t it fixed yet? I’ve been using the company religiously for two years with the same address, it doesn’t make sense.

An Uber driver picked me up at Yankee Stadium last night to take me to Westchester. The app showed a fare of $119. When I got to my destination, the fare was over $400. Uber said this was because it was a time of hwavy traffic - which it was - but the ride still was only an hour. Uber reduced fare by 25% but still seeks to charge me 2X what the app said. Class action coming...

I was a big fan of Uber over the years with the amount of traveling I do. Pretty upfront, timely, etc. Now, I'm a little jaded in the company on how it practices its business and your ability to contact. A big concern of mine is that Uber uses its own GPS mapping systems. Utterly useless. My last three rides couldn't even get to my locations, but of course you are charged for any inconvenience a driver may have. I haven't had a ride yet that the estimate wasn't even remotely close. It's seems like they gouge you for every little thing. Maybe I'll start using a taxi again...

So I've ridden on several Ubers and Lyfts. There's just so much drama with Uber. In school I've read several business cases on HR issues, harrassment, unethical treatment of drivers, poor conditions for drivers, underpaying and overcharging. I'd say as a whole, Uber drivers in my experience have been less happy and would actually complain about Uber as a company, whereas Lyft is a very different story, but I'll leave the rest of my thoughts on that for my review of Lyft. Maybe things have changed since, but all I know is that Lyft did not have anywhere near the same trash in its baggage. I'd probably only take Uber if I couldn't find an alternative like a Lyft within a reasonable distance.

I have had many negative experiences with Uber drivers, to the point where I emailed the company and was given credit for future rides due to the unprofessional nature of some of the drivers: once, my driver pulled over to write down the license plate of a pickup truck with people riding in its bed, once for the driver cancelling my ride due to my age (even though I had a student account), and once for a driver contacting me after the ride to convince me to become a part of her health and fitness business. Overall, I’ve had more positive experiences with the drivers I’ve met, but some of Uber’s employees are quite unprofessional. I do appreciate their compensation, though.

Uber is great until you need some immediate support. My mom left left a bag of medication in the back of a canceled Uber ride and it took two and a half hours just to find a phone number to call someone and another two hours for them to get hold of the driver. Just pray you never need to get help from Uber.

I normally take Lyft, but two different times my Lyft app hasn't had any drivers available so I've used Uber. The first time was in san fran and my driver ran over a median and almost hit a trolley. It was scary and we just went separate ways after... could've been a huge bummer if someone got hurt. The other time my driver got pulled over for an illegal u-turn and I was 25 minutes late to my brother's graduation.

The app was easy to use and the car came at the time expected. However, I would have liked the driver to open the trunk and put my luggage in the trunk rather than me doing it.

You'll make it to your destination, however the drivers can sometimes be very inquisitive. There's been numerous times I've felt pressured into saying where I'm going and why. Maybe they consider that to be friendly? Also, the Uber drivers usually take longer than expected to arrive which is inconvenient.

Getting in touch with drivers has been a pain, especially if something is left in the car. I also recently had login attempts and tried to chat with customer service. I looked online, found a number, but overall, seemed way more hassle to where I just gave up. Step your customer service game up please.

Idea is good and I have had great experiences, but one time i think my driver was drunk. It took too ling to get to where we were going and had to pay more for that. Gave him a bad review but I dont think anything came of it.

I used this in Las Vegas and it took 45 minutes for the Uber to arrive but the ride back to our hotel was fine since the driver had a good playlist and a charger for me to charge my phone. It's a little sketchy though since all the cars kinda look the same so make sure you can easily identify cars

One time after a Beyonce concert I had to walk five miles in order to get an Uber. By God's great mercy, one found me at a Jack in the Box. That was a weird trip.

only used service once but my driver was late, dirty car and marginal personal grooming. Probably a good service and the price was reasonable but I'd only use it in an emergency going forward.

Uber used to be one of my favorite transportation apps, but I noticed that I would get fraudulent activity from outside of the country through this app. Also, the rates have gone up a significant amount even for short rides.

My Uber driver speeded all over the road and continued to aggravate my head ache with loud music even after I asked him to lower the volume. Although the company is strong they have no real control on the employees.

On my last vacation I was in a different county and it said there was Uber close I could use but the app kept not working which meant we couldn’t find a driver and so we had to use the taxis there.

In my opinion Uber is overated and expensive. In my experience the drivers have been rude. I think Uber should lower their costs especially when the service is less than impressive
