Carpool technology company Carma was founded in 2007 as Avego in Cork, Ireland. As a peer-to-peer commuter-matching carpool app, the company collaborated with local government agencies to launch local carpool communities and HOV incentive programs in California, Washington, and Texas.
Currently, Carma has shifted into the field of corporate rideshare with an app called Carma Share, solely available for its new rideshare partnership with Toyota in Plano, Texas.
As a rideshare partnership for employees at Toyota headquarters in Plano, Texas, this pilot program has a lot of things to admire, one of which is security. By partnering with Toyota, all Carma Share users must sign in with their pre-existing company email address and password. This means that even if you don't personally know the co-workers in your upcoming carpool, they are verified company employees. This lends a certain accountability to riders and drivers, where other car sharing apps are lacking.
Another security feature is the DMV check for drivers. Users scan their drivers' license for an official DMV check. Although you are submitting this for approval, it doesn't necessarily mean that you need to wait a full day before you can drive. Drivers can be approved in less than one minute.
The Carma Share experience comes with several amenities. First, the actual vehicle to be driven is provided. You won't be riding in someone's personal minivan with its possibilities of Goldfish crumbles and McDonald's trash strewn around. This helps to ground the program in a professional way. Another way that drivers are put at ease is the onboard WiFi and power outlets available for your trip. This makes the ride into a mobile work environment, if you need to use that time to catch up.
Along with these benefits, your purchase includes fuel, tolls, and insurance.
Currently, Carma Share is the company's only product available for download. This is a corporate rideshare program for Toyota employees working at the Plano, Texas company headquarters. If this pilot program were adopted by other companies and government agencies, it would clearly be a benefit.
Carma Carpool has several different technology platforms to be used for carpooling, tolling, and rideshare. The new corporate rideshare partnership is promising.
Currently, the app isn't available for new adoption outside of the Plano, Texas Toyota pilot program.
