The Good

  • Environmentally Friendly
  • Awards
  • Travel Insurance
  • Rewards Program
  • On-Time Percentage

One great thing about Sun Country is their impressive efforts to reduce their carbon footprint. In fact, according to their website, they are one of the most environmentally friendly airlines around. Here are some of the ways Sun Country is going green: -Over 90% of the food served on Sun Country flights is from Minnesota, which saves resources typically used for shipping food -A paperless airline, Sun Country significantly reduces waste by allowing travelers to print their own tickets and itineraries -Sun Country flies Boeing 737-800's, which have the lowest carbon emissions per seat of any aircraft in its size class After 33 years in business, it's clear they have had practice addressing issues and doing their best to make things right for consumers. According to their website, Sun Country has been listed as one of the Top Ten Domestic Airlines by Travel+Leisure magazine for five years in a row and Conde Nast Travelers magazine for three years in a row. Sun Country offers travel insurance, called UFlex, that allows passengers to make up to three time, date, destination and name changes on their flight itinerary without paying change fees. The only fee that may be accrued is the difference between the original purchased ticket and an upgraded ticket. This impressive package is available for only $30 per passenger. The UFly Rewards program is another great feature offered to Sun Country customers that allows members to earn rewards for points earned rather than dollars spent. Points can be earned from plane ticket purchases, First Class upgrades, Sun Country Airlines Visa Signature credit card purchases, and partner purchases (LifeLock, Hertz and 1-800-FLOWERS.COM). Benefits of UFly Rewards include:

  • Pool your points with up to nine other UFly members
  • Redeem points for one-way and round-trip tickets and upgrades with no blackout dates or capacity controls
  • Remain an active member of UFly and your points will not expire

As if that wasn't enough to get you all warm and fuzzy at the thought of flying with Sun Country, reports over the last two months (May 1, 2015 to June 30, 2015) show an on-time percentage of 86% with only 2% of flights being excessively late.

The Bad

  • Destinations
  • No Wi-Fi

While people seem to be pleased with their Sun Country experience, the reality is the airline doesn't offer service to very many locations. With only around 35 destinations across the United States, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, many sought-after destinations are not yet available. The fact that none of their planes are currently equipped with Wi-Fi capability is a notable ding on a passenger's idea of a convenient, comfortable flight experience. With the increased demand for Wi-Fi availability, Allegiant hopes to offer this feature to customers in the near future.

The Bottom Line

Overall, Sun Country is an excellent choice when deciding which airline to travel with. They are environmentally friendly; they have excellent ratings and recognition, they arrive and depart on-time with great consistency. Offering fair prices and great customer service, there is no reason to doubt that Sun Country will meet your traveling needs.

Arrived for my daughter's flight about 55 minutes ahead of the departure. Their sign said the desk closed 45 minutes prior to departure. We, luckily, found a supervisor who after initially defending the closing, realized the error and she proceeded to check the luggage and print the boarding passes. She was great.

A death in the family and Sun Country won't refund tickets... I find this crazy. My wife and I were planning on taking a vacation when her father passed away a few days before. As I'm sure anyone would understand you deal with the loss above anything else. That being said we still called Sun Country to inform them of our loss and provide a death certificate as soon as possible. Sun Country's response was it was a $90 change fee with another $100 fee for something else (couldn't remember as I was a bit agitated) and had I called sooner they could've provided a credit against my account. The tickets were $200 total. It's unfortuante the compassion most airlines have (we were flying United out and they refunded the tickets no question) is lost on my hometown airline. Either way we felt people should know that Sun Country in the most extreme circumstances still won't refund ticket fares.

Sun Country offers a good variety of flight options at reasonable pricing. They are particularly good for someone looking for connections to smaller airports. Their customer service is good and the on-board experience reflects this.

I’d never heard of sun country before and the reviews scared me but I had a positive experience flying with them. I didn’t have any layovers but all of my bags made it and the customer service people were fairly helpful.

Terrible - 71/2 hours in flight delays departing from Minneapolis to Anchorage - missed my connector flight to Kenai and cost me $300 for hotel room - sent letter to CEO & Customer Service asking for reimbursement for hotel room - never received any reply !

A great budget airline--you can get flights for really cheap, especially out of MSP, which is awesome! I love that they have such good flights to Florida and Arizona.
