Yahoo is primarily known for its search engines, but its websites are a force to be reckoned with, too. In 2013, for the first time since 2011, Yahoo surpassed Google for the number of visitors to its websites in the United States. In 2013, Yahoo reported 196 million American visitors to its websites. Monthly, worldwide, 700 million people visit a Yahoo website. Yahoo has been in business since 1994. For a while, Yahoo operated GeoCities, which offered free websites. Now, Yahoo has moved its users towards its small business web hosting. These sites are aimed to meet the needs of individuals and small businesses.

The Good

  • Many unlimited features including site pages and email addresses
  • Site design tools included
  • PHP and Perl programming languages

The Bad

  • Limited Options
  • Only Shared Web Hosting

Limitations

The only negative aspects of Yahoo's Small Business web hosting services were in the limited options available for its basic server package. With only 100 GB of storage and 1 TB of bandwidth per month, the basic package limits the resources that a small business owner can put online. Also, Yahoo Small Businesses web hosting does not offer more advanced administrative functions, such as Shell Access (SSH).

Only Shared Hosting Options

Yahoo offers only one hosting option which is shared, greatly limiting its customers' potential. We would like to see Yahoo extend its services to include dedicated, cloud, managed and VPS web hosting options. Yahoo customers would benefit more from customized plans that included these other hosting options.

The Bottom Line

We recommend Yahoo's Small Business hosting service for individuals or small businesses. We found that its templates and designs were easy for the small business owner and individual to manage. Yahoo Small Businesses ranks really high in usability, offering the best features for clients who owned and operated a website, either as individuals or as a business. We do not recommend its services to anyone who is not in need of shared web hosting.

I use Yahoo to host my business domain and have used them for the past 12 years. With all of Yahoo's privacy issues the past 3 years, I have abandoned most of their services but continue to use their web hosting. Besides, it's too much trouble to change.

I was with Yahoo Small Business for several years. When aabaco came into the picture things started to fall apart. Slow web service, trouble with WordPress and conflicts that made no sense. Transferred my name to another provider two years ago, canceled account. Billed the following year and had to fight to get money back. Closed account again last year and again billed this year. Just got off the phone with then to dispute charge and closed the account for the third time. Filed a fraudulent charge with PayPal and thinking about contacting the police to file a complaint. Keep your records with this company you will need them

Yahoo says you can have up to 500 separate email boxes with a hosting package, but that's blatantly false. Unlike every other hosting company on his planet, where the business creates email addresses and either forward the log in information to the the people assigned the addresses, or allows them to create their own logins, Yahoo bizarrely forces administrators to "invite" the people designated to receive the email addresses with an email to their personal email address. After they respond, they must then get a Yahoo email account to use joeschmoe@mycompany.whatever. And only one @my company.whatever email address is allowed per outside email and Yahoo ID.
