The Good

  • Graduation rate
  • Job placement
  • Federal assistance
  • Programs

Graduation Rate

A school that works to help each individual student succeed, and subsequently graduate, is a huge draw for most students. Of the students that start a WyoTech program, seventy-seven percent of them make it to graduation. There are obviously students who have to drop out of programs for financial or time constraints, but a majority of those who start at WyoTech are able to find a way to finish with a degree or certificate in hand.

Job Placement

The WyoTech platform is designed to help students land employment upon graduation. Their job placement services match students up with careers that match their area of study. Of those students that graduate from WyoTech, seventy-nine percent will be employed within the first six months. This rate is relatively high, especially compared to the other trade colleges out there.

Federal Assistance

Students can take advantage of both federal financial assistance as well as federal work for study programs. Federal financial assistance applies to students who qualify. These students can get federal grants and/or loans. Additionally, there are federal work for study programs that allows students to pay their debts back through work service.

Programs

There are five areas of study available to WyoTech students. These industries include: automotive, diesel, collision, motorcycle, and marine. Within each of these subject areas, students can specialize in a number of areas. In automotive, students can learn about applied service management, auto-diesel vehicle technology, high performance powertrain, light-duty diesel, motorsports chassis fabrication, off-road power concentration, street rod and custom fabrication, and trim and upholstery technology. Diesel specialties include advanced diesel, applied service management, DATE for mack trucks and Volvo trucks, diesel-auto vehicle technology, high performance powertrain, light-duty diesel, motorsports chassis fabrication, off-road power concentration, and street rod and custom fabrication. Collision specialties include applied service management, motorsports chassis fabrication, off-road power concentration, street rod and custom fabrication, and trim and upholstery technology. Specialities in the motorcycle program include applied service management, Asian concentration, European concentration, Harley-Davidson concentration, and off-road power concentration. Marine specialties include advanced marine concentration, applied service management, and off-road power concentration.

The Bad

  • Loan repayment default
  • Locations

Loan Repayment Default

Despite having the ability to obtain federal financial assistance, many students are still forced to take out loans to finance their education. While many WyoTech students are employed shortly after graduation, there is still a high rate of loan repayment default. Roughly 19 percent of all WyoTech students that take out a loan to pay for their schooling end up defaulting on their student loans. The rate, in fact, was so high that the U.S. government eventually had to intervene to help these students.

Locations

While at one point WyoTech had seven campuses, there are currently only three for interested students to enroll in. The three locations include Blairsville, Pennsylvania; Daytona, Florida; and Laramie, Wyoming. Students who do not live near one of these WyoTech campuses will not be able to take advantage of the programs the college has to offer. Limited campus locations drastically reduce the number of students that can take advantage of what WyoTech has to offer.

The Bottom Line

WyoTech has found a way to help students who want to further their career in the automative/mechanics industry. With a variety of programs to choose from, students are likely to find exactly what they are looking for in term of an area of study. That being said, these educational opportunities are limited due to the number of locations. WyoTech is a viable option for students hoping to start a career in auto-mechanics or other related fields of study.
