Founded in 2011, Duolingo is a language-learning platform available online or via mobile apps for Android, iOS, and Windows. It offers more than 30 language courses for English speakers, including High Valyrian and Klingon, for fantasy enthusiasts. In one account, users can work on multiple languages and keep track of progress.

Duolingo is the most popular app for learning languages and is the most downloaded app in the world in the education category. The Duolingo method focuses on bite-sized short, gamified lessons, with exercises that build and adapt to what you need extra help with. One of the company's main tenets is to make free educational opportunities, so Duolingo is free. However, there are in-app upgrades to add extras, work offline, or get rid of ads.

An initial placement test is offered, if you are a continuing learner, so you will have an easier time jumping right in. Additionally, the platform offers Duolingo for Schools (still free), so that teachers can implement Duo's platform to track students' practice and progress.

Duolingo was great when I first started using it years ago, but now it’s changed and it’s not as helpful. Duolingo doesn’t teach the alphabet which makes learning a language very difficult. I find that duolingo is more work than it’s worth.

Very entertaining and helpful. I love to use this app. However, sometimes it gets discouraging when I am trying to advance to the next level to achieve various goals and I have to be spending an unreasonable amount of time on the app to do so. I wish you wouldn't include achievements like that. I also wonder if I would be helped more if there were more opportunities to form sentences with out the helper words. I think it would test me more and help it get in my long-term memory a little better.

I used to use Duolingo and I thought it was a good program to learn Spanish until I took a Spanish class at my local high school and I realized how much I was missing out on. The app had correct information but it didn't explain why it was correct or incorrect. I wish the software was more detailed in the information they shared during the learning process, but it was very easy to access.

I like how it teaches you the basics about the language. My only complaint is that even if you can show that you have mastered the easy parts of the language, you either have to spend a bunch of time passing off the easy levels, or you have to pay to test into the harder part.

Annoying that it keeps sending me so many reminders, but good for beginners who have no idea what they're getting into. The programs are designed to be easy and teach a simple understanding of a language. I used this to learn Japanese but had to switch to a different program after the lessons started to get repetitive.

I love this app it is a lot of fun and I enjoy using it for language learning! I will say that while it's fun it's not the most efficient for actual language learning but it is something fun to do and can help when coupled with other language learning services.

Language learning apps are tricky. Will you learn rules, words, and structure for your new language? Yes. Will you learn how to speak fluently? Likely not. Duolingo has successfully gamified language learning, certainly, and to mildly successful results.

Duolingo has a great interface and plenty of languages, but I have found other methods of language learning to be more effective. Duolingo is, however, one of the most convenient and maybe the easiest software to use, which encourages consistency (which I think beats less consistent, though more effective, methods every time).

I used to use Duolingo before, but now that they added in the paid function it just isn't worth it. I use Rosetta Stone instead and paid the upfront 200$, but got so much more out of it. Duolingo is okay, but I don't think you can truly learn to speak a language through it.

I tried to learn spanish on this app and it never told me how to pronounce the words, therefore I always got the speaking sections wrong and sounded confusing when I spoke. It also doesn't teach conjugation when it would be most helpful, I didn't learn it on the app and eventually gave up, if I had learned conjugation it would have been helpful

Both of my daughters use Duolingo in conjunction with being enrolled in Spanish dual language courses at school. My 12 year old daughter has had better success with the program. I find it can be frustrating for my 7 year old daughter as it’s a little too advanced for her.

Duolingo is an OK app. I wasn’t very impressed with it, so I moved to Rosetta Stone which I’d begin learning a lot more quickly.I would say Duolingo is good if you already know the language and you just want to touch up some vocabulary.

Duolingo is a useful application in learning a new language. It encourages you to practice a little bit each day, starting out with fairly easy words and structure of a language. It can give you quite an easy understanding of the basics of language after only a couple weeks.

Duolingo is great for those starting out in a new language, but I don't consider it the best source. I'm learning French at school and learning it on Duolingo. I've found that many words taught on Duolingo are either incorrect or improperly used. It's great if you're planning a trip, but not if you plan on actually learning to speak the language.

well, you can't really learn a language with it, but it's nice to catch some useful phrases in other languages, cause you never know when you may need them!

Duolingo offers a pretty good range of languages and some fun, interactive lessons. It teaches you vocabulary pretty well but doesn't ever go into the grammar aspect of language.

I like duolingo, I learn quite a bit from it and get interested for a while, but I forget about it really fast and don't go on for ages, it's great fun. If you can stay interested.

This app is helpful to an extent when learning new languages. I use it for language practice and supplement. The app does constantly remind the user to be active on the app and that can get annoying, so keep that in mind.

There is quite a bit lost in pursuit of simplicity. It’s fine for learning Latin/Germanic languages but doesn’t teach alphabet or pronunciation very well for other languages.

I like that it gives the basics of a language. I just have a hard time transitioning from the app to real life so I feel like the actual application of the skills isn't great.

Duolingo is fun and keeps you motivated to learn a language and keep practicing. Nonetheless, when a user stops using Duolingo, there are countless notifications at least 4 to 5 times a day. Very annoying and distracting.

I liked Duolingo because it made it easy for you to get a streak and only have to do it for about 10 minutes a day, however I feel as if they don't teach you how to actually speak fluently.

It's alright. It's good for teaching basic vocabulary, but it doesn't teach you grammar and composition, which is really important. It does the bare minimum.
