Extended StayAmerica was originally founded on January 9, 1995 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida by former executives, George D. Johnson, Jr. and Wayne Huizenga. The first Extended StayAmerica locations were built in South Carolina and Georgia before the company acquired the extended-stay hotel chain known as StudioPLUS. The goal of the Extended StayAmerica business model was to provide a standard economy service to guests traveling for long (or even short) periods of time. In 2004, the Blackstone Group acquired Extended StayAmerica, and it is part of the Hilton Worldwide family.
While Extended StayAmerica is owned by the Blackstone Group, it is closely associated with Hilton Worldwide and La Quinta Inns and Suites due to common ownership. Prior to being bought out, Extended StayAmerica operated 475 hotels. Since then, it has grown to nearly 630 properties with over 8,500 employees.
Despite including the word "extended" in the company's chain name, Extended StayAmerica accommodates guests regardless of how long they stay. Suites are designed to allow for long-term reservations, but it is not a requirement. Other benefits of booking a room at an Extended StayAmerica location include the following:
Extended StayAmerica also provides guests with the ability to choose the floor plan that best suits their traveling needs. Rooms with various bed sizes, sitting room arrangements, and kitchens vary from location to location. Upon making a reservation, guests can select which suite they would like to stay in. Costs will also vary based on that selection.
Extended StayAmerica offers increasing nightly rate savings the longer the stay with affordable weekly, biweekly, and monthly rates through its StayMore discount.
These discounts include:
What sets Extended StayAmerica apart is that its hotels are cat and dog friendly. At select locations, Extended StayAmerica has a pet-friendly policy. A maximum of two pets are allowed in each suite for an additional $25 plus tax per day with a per pet non-refundable cleaning fee. This fee does not exceed $150 plus tax per pet for the first month; each additional month, the cleaning fee does not exceed $50 plus tax per pet. Service animals, however, are exempt from this charge. Eligible pets for the pet-friendly policy must also be no longer than 36 inches and no taller than 36 inches.
Extended StayAmerica provides accessibility features for its guests with disabilities at its hotels. These features include, but are not limited to:
Extended StayAmerica is designed to benefit the long-term traveler. That means everything from the design of the rooms to the amenities offered are typically for those who plan on staying for longer periods of time. While those who only plan on staying for a short period of time can book an Extended StayAmerica room, they will likely be paying a higher price for amenities that are not necessary for their traveling purposes.
Since ownership has transitioned a number of times, the branding and expansion of the Extended StayAmerica chain has suffered. This can be seen in the following areas:
Extended StayAmerica has tried to rebuild their brand, and has successfully been able to do so in recent years. That being said, there are still some guests who have had poor experiences with the brand, which has damaged the company's reputation in the past.
Extended StayAmerica works to provide an accommodating environment that closely resembles what one would find in a traditional apartment or condominium. Rooms include more than just a bed and bathroom, but also feature kitchens and sitting rooms. Guests who stay for a long or short period of time at an Extended StayAmerica location can expect the following:
