The Good

  • Search for discounts
  • Comparison tool
  • Great website

Search for Discounts

Trivago.com delivers hotel information and these results can not only save money in lodging, they can offer travelers peace of mind or allow them to research rates to make sure that a previously booked room is truly the best priced option available. Many of the discount travel websites have some sort of price guarantee. This requires the traveler themselves find a lower-priced option online and report it within a relatively short window of booking the reservation to the site. Many times, this price guarantee is unused or goes without investigation due to the hassle of doing the legwork. Enter Trivago.com and searches are a breeze!

Comparison Tool

The most useful tool available on the Trivago platform is their hotel comparison tool. This tool allows users to quickly compare a number of information points in an effort to minimize time spent on the research portion of travel booking and maximize savings through discounts and featured rates. The comparison tool will break down the following criteria points for users:
  • Hotel star/guest rating
  • Nightly rates
  • Proximity to popular attractions/sights
  • Accommodations (such as continental breakfast, pool, workout facility, etc.)

Great Website

Additionally, Trivago.com offers travelers a clean and concise website with graphical interfaces that make the site feel more "fun" to filter search results. Even though the database of hotels which is included in Trivago.com's search is over 700,000, the search results load quickly and the comparisons are easily spotted. Each property comes up in a segment of the page and the prices for other booking sites load with the property, making it easy to spot the best deal. Trivago's ability to aggregate data and pricing information is one of the best resources/tools available to its users. They pull information from over 250 websites. After pulling in this data, users are able to input specifics regarding their upcoming travel and find the right solution for their lodging needs. The Trivago "Top" widget can be found directly on the homepage. This feature allows users to search through frequently traveled cities and/or destinations. These "Top" results are based on what other travelers are currently booking and provide users with additional ideas and insights into what is happening in the world of travel. This section will also provide ideas regarding attractions and other activities to take part in while on vacation.

The Bad

  • Limited bookings
  • Not as comprehensive

Limited Bookings

Even though Trivago is one of the largest hotel booking sites available online, there are still some areas of concern for prospective travelers. While Trivago may be the resource users want to use to book their lodging accommodations, that is essentially all that can be reserved through this platform. Rental cars can also be reserved, but on a limited basis. Reservations that cannot be made on the Trivago platform include:
  • Airfare - users will need to go through another booking site or the airlines directly for airfare reservations
  • Vacation packages - all-inclusive vacation packages are not available for booking
  • Cruises - since Trivago specializes in hotel booking and not necessarily "travel," cruises are not featured on their platform

Not as Comprehensive

Trivago.com requires an additional step to book your reservations and is not as comprehensive as other discount travel sites because you cannot get information on airfare, cruise prices or car rentals. This creates the need to go to another site or two to book airfare, rooms, etc. Being that one of the reasons for using a discount travel website is to save time, this can be a turn-off for some travelers. Trivago.com does not operate a customer service department per se in the sense that they are an information engine.

The Bottom Line

Travelers could benefit from using Trivago.com to plan their booking beforehand or to verify that they received the lowest price possible and apply for and receive the best price guarantee promised by other sites. It's a good idea, but other sites are able to offer more to their customers. Those that use Trivago for their travel booking needs can expect the following from the platform:
  1. Largest hotel search - comprehensive and complex breakdown of lodging providers
  2. Advanced technology - data collected from hundreds of sites to provide accurate search results
  3. Discounted rates - deals will be found on Trivago that are not found anywhere else
  4. Hotel comparison - tool that compares the rates of featured hotels
  5. Limited rewards - occasional promos and discounts available
  6. Basic mobile app - standard features, but free to download
  7. Limited booking options - only hotels and rental cars available to book

I am giving Trivago.com a 0 star rating due to: 1) Fraud and False Advertising, 2) Lack of any sort of Customer Services, and 3) Overall horrible experience dealing with this Company. I saw a hotel advertised on trivago.com in Downtown Chicago for a great deal. Trivago took me to hoteling.com to complete the transaction. However, when I finished booking my hotel on hoteling.com, it told me I had booked a hotel in a different location that was nearly 15 miles west of Chicago. I immediately cancelled my booking, but was charged a fee equal to that of my reservation. $400 dollars in the hole for this transaction, and I am still trying to receive a refund from hoteling.com and trivago.com. They have not been helpful to say the least. Both companies have a non-existent customer service desk (hoteling does not have any customer service hotline at all and trivago.com has one that is never monitored and prevents the opportunity to leave voicemails). What is more - both companies are unwilling to admit and process a refund for a mistake that is clearly a prevalent error with their services due to mapping issues and broken links between trivago.com and other booking websites. So beware of booking with trivago.com! Stay far away!!

I haven't been as succesful using Trivago as the commercials on TV have promised. I have found more luck and better prices doing my own searches on other search engines.

Great way to find a hotel. It is super easy and shows you if there are any deals. Had everything booked in less than 20 minutes.

I like how the site offers side by side rate comparisons. I just wish the layout wasn't so cluttered.
