ICANN Fees

Some domain registrar companies add on ICANN fees at the checkout while other companies didn't mention whether or not they had those fees included with the price. Wix follows the latter. They do not indicate any ICANN fees whatsoever. Since every domain name registrar has to pay an annual fee to ICANN for each domain name registered through them- 18 cents -, Wix appears to have some transparency issues in this area. Two of the biggest domain name sellers disclose this through a small print notice at the bottom of their home pages, but Wix does not. However, there is no increase in the purchase price, so one possibility is that Wix includes this fee in their annual $14.95 domain name price.

Bulk Price

Due the fact that Wix offers a maximum of 32 Top Level Domains, there are no discounts for those seeking a discount on bulk domain name purchases. Typically, bulk discounts are offered by companies serving a least 100 domains or more. Those companies have a competitive advantage over Wix in this area.

Simple Domain Transfer Policies

Wix's domain transfer policies are standard protocol. This means, according to ICANN rules, you have to wait for 60 days after purchasing the domain before you can transfer it. After that, if you follow the procedure outlined on Wix's website, it will take 7 days for the domain to transfer. Wix does not charge any fees for this. Some registrars may hold your domain name hostage, making it difficult to switch registrars if you become dissatisfied or may charge inflated fees or create delays to avoid losing business. Despite it being procedure, customers are affected adversely by this policy which forces them to have to wait a total of over 2 months to transfer a domain they purchased-in some cases for that very purpose. It appears Wix has purposely made purchasing a domain name with them solely for the purpose of using their website hosting. Getting a domain name alone appears unfavorable.

Customer Support

Customer support for Wix has a few deficiencies. One, there is no telephone number for customer support. (Telephone support may be only available for paid annual plan subscribers). Secondly, Wix lets you email them an inquiry through windows mail. They should have an email listed openly on their site rather than having to click on a link. This is also inconvenient since many users do not use windows mail. Wix appears to want to dissuade customers from direct contact by 'encouraging' them to visit the Q&A page. Third, Wix does not offer Live Chat-a very convenient feature where you can communicate with a customer service representative during off-peak hours using instant messaging. Wix.com does, however, offer a comprehensive Help Center page where many common questions and topics are already answered. For example, if you want to know how to transfer your domain name, you can click on the topic and find the answer there. At the top of the page is a question search bar where you can ask any question and find the answer you need in their database. They also allow you to submit a ticket through their site if you have an issue that needs to be resolved. Outside of the thoroughness of WIx's Help Center, when compared to domain providers who offer phone support, a company email address listed openly on the site and Live Chat, Wix falls short in this area.

If you are an avid mobile user, Wix has several highly rated Android and iOS apps that allow you to shop and communicate on their hosted sites. If customer service is a crucial component for you, Wix is not a favorable choice. They do not have telephone support to walk you through the purchasing or setting up process or to help you navigate a problem or crisis. If you are a do-it-yourself type, Wix works well, with comprehensive online resources with common Q&A pages to guide you along the way. They also have earned an A rating for successfully resolving customer complaints.
