If you’re looking to buy a car from—or sell your car to— a trusted brand name, CarMax is certainly worth being one of the first options you try. The company’s first location opened in 1993 as an experiment suggested by executives at the Circuit City electronics corporation. The project, nicknamed “Honest Rick’s Used Cars”, was meant to expand Circuit City’s enterprise into other arenas. What became known as CarMax fulfilled that goal, growing rapidly across the United States through various acquisitions of car manufacturing real estate.

Currently headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, the company currently operates 195 used car stores in 94 markets. CarMax.com strives to offer superior quality used and certified pre-owned vehicles, as well as friendly service to its customers. The CarMax company has consistently been named as one of FORTUNE® 500’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” for 10 straight years. It has been serving customers for over 59 years, holding themselves to a high standard of integrity with their services and products.

The Good

  • Focus on Customer Experience
  • Quality Inspection & Guarantees
  • Transfer Used Cars to a Location Near You
  • Great Used Car Resources & Tools
  • Sell or Trade-In Options

Focus on Customer Experience

CarMax is the largest used car retailer on and off the internet, allowing customers to shop for vehicles the same way they shop for products at what they call "big-box" retailers-sort of like a Costco or Sam's Club for the car shopping and buying experience. This refers to promising car shoppers an affordable purchase price with a no-haggle price model, a broad selection of CarMax Quality Certified Pre-Owned vehicles, and superior customer service.

CarMax's car buying process is based on the results of a notable consumer survey the company conducted back in 1991. The survey asked everyday consumers about their preferences when it comes to the process of buying a car. The answers below are what define today's CarMax's shopping experience. What this means for you the customer:

  • Customers said they don't like playing games, so CarMax lets you know the price right away, not after hours of haggling and mind games.
  • Customers said they don't like their time being wasted, so CarMax lets you have one salesperson work with you from start to finish who won't make you drive all over town to find the right car.
  • Customers said they want security, so the company inspects and reconditions all cars and backs them with a CarMax 30 day warranty so you don't have to worry what will happen when you drive off the lot. They also come with a free AutoCheck vehicle history report.
  • Customers wanted more fun and less pressure from car salespeople, so CarMax employees are trained to offer assistance without being pushy.

Quality Inspection & Guarantees

CarMax has a sizeable listing of used cars (new cars as well) that support its promise to offer security to customers. Each used vehicle has to be CarMax Quality Certified, meaning every used car must pass a Certified Quality Inspection.

Each used car sold also comes with a 5-Day Money-Back Guarantee, as well as a 30-Day Limited Warranty (and a 60-Day Warranty in Connecticut, Minnesota and Rhode Island and 90 Days in Massachusetts and New York).

Additionally, each used car buyer has the option of purchasing a MaxCare Extended Service plan covering the following:

  • Climate control
  • Cooling system
  • Drivetrain
  • Electrical systems
  • Electronics
  • Engine
  • Steering
  • Suspension
  • Transmission

The extended warranty is offered through MaxCare, a third-party warranty company. Deductibles start at $50 per visit. Customers who purchase the extended warranty will also receive emergency roadside assistance and rental reimbursement. The website provides a free coverage estimate based on how many miles you drive, your type of car, and your desired deductible.

Transfer Used Cars to a Location Near You

CarMax can transfer any used car you are considering to a local car dealership near you, so you can test drive it at your convenience. Transfer fees may be applicable, but oftentimes this service is free.

Consumers are encouraged to ask a CarMax sales representative about this nationwide transfer service and any possible fees ahead of time.

There is no obligation to buy the car once it is transferred.

Great Used Car Resources & Tools

There are plenty of resources at CarMax.com to help you find a vehicle. Read thousands of research articles, ratings, and reviews on the CarMax website.

For used car shoppers, this car retailer has a nice array of tools like a payment calculator to calculate and compare monthly payments and overall affordability.

What's unique, however, is their Tax, Title, Tags, and Fees Calculator and their MPG Savings Calculator. The Tax, Title, Tags, and Fees Calculator helps you figure out what sales tax, title, and tags fees you will need to pay, according to what state you reside in. All you have to do is select your state and vehicle price range and hit the Calculate button. If you're unsure about what fee rules and regulations apply to your next auto purchase, this is a perfect car shopper's tool.

The MPG (Miles Per Gallon) Savings calculator allows you to see how a vehicle's fuel economy will affect your bottom line. It actually allows you to compare two cars at once to see how they stack up against each other. This is a great tool to determine long-term maintenance costs for car ownership. To find out how much you'll save (or lose), locate the desired car's gas mileage on the Carmax vehicle profiles you selected, then fill in the average MPG of two cars you'd like to compare and hit "Calculate Savings."

Sell or Trade-In Options

CarMax.com will also buy or trade-in your current vehicle no matter what condition it is in. An owner can get a free written offer that is good for 7 days at any CarMax dealership location. If you choose to sell your car to CarMax, you will receive a bank draft on the spot that may be deposited in your bank right away.

Another unique component for consumers is being able to sell their car to CarMax. Although CarMax is not the only car buying service site doing this, it is the only one that offers a unique appraisal process to see what your car is worth. The appraisal process looks like this:

  • Fast and free—your appraisal can take as little as 30 minutes and you're welcome to watch while you wait.
  • No obligation—CarMax will buy your car even if you don't buy theirs.
  • No appointment needed—bring your car in for an appraisal any time they're open.
  • CarMax appraisers—specially trained to evaluate the cars they buy.
  • The written offer—it's good for seven days at any CarMax location.
  • Fast payment—upon selling CarMax your car, you'll receive a bank draft on the spot!

The appraisal process is Step two in a streamlined, no-hassle, three-step selling process—the result of the code of conduct based on consumer's preferences previously mentioned.

  • Step One is to bring in your car to one of CarMax's dealer locations. Making an appointment is optional, but you'd probably be better off making one—especially if you have a busy schedule.
  • Step Two is to get a written offer. This comes after the appraisal process and is good for seven days.
  • Step Three is the final step where you have the option to complete the sale transaction, trade it, or think it over. CarMax will buy your car regardless of make, miles, or condition.

The Bad

  • Issues with MPG Savings Calculator
  • Spread Out Locations

Issues with MPG Savings Calculator

CarMax has a lot to offer used car buyers and sellers with only a few inconveniences. For example, the MPG Savings calculator is a great tool-it would be even greater if you could just find out the miles per gallon savings on one car instead of having to compare two. When searching the site, if you're only interested in one vehicle, you can't use the tool.

Spread Out Locations

Another inconvenience is that if you are not living near one of CarMax's locations, taking advantage of 'sell to CarMax' or trade-in process may not be viable. As store locations are so spread out and possibly in a state other than your own, you may need to make travel arrangements or you may be unable to afford the trip either time-wise or money-wise. (This is where the Tax, title, tags, and fees calculator comes in handy).

gavel

The Bottom Line

CarMax offers lots of tools to help people with buying and selling cars, trucks, and SUVs. What makes CarMax so massive is that, unlike many online auto companies, they are not just an internet business. The company has brick-and-mortar car dealerships around the country—although very spread out.

Getting to one of their locations may be an issue, but since CarMax will buy your car regardless of make, miles, or condition, if you plan on selling your car or are looking to buy one yourself, their website is one worth exploring.

Leon Thomas Cary, NC

I made a purchase at CarMax on 1/12/22. Originally I had given them a great review, that was until I had to deal with the failed inspection and their incompetence when dealing with their service department. I have had this vehicle for 2 1/2 months and have had 5 service appointments and not 1 time did the mechanics repair my issue. I totally do not recommend purchasing a car from the Carmax in Raleigh NC. The sales group did a nice job getting me into the car I wanted, but they clearly didn’t inspect the car before selling it to me. I had a busted speaker that took almost 3 months for them to order and replace, now I am dealing with squeaky breaks. Ive had to go to the shop 3 times for breaks and rotors. I went to the shop today for the break problems, this is the 4th time in 3 months that I have had to take off work to address this issue. Shortly after leaving the service center I hear the same breaks squeaking that I brought the car in for. So now I have a 5th appointment to get breaks repaired. Sad but true!! Do not purchase from this dealer. I also filed a complaint with the BBB, CarMax hasn’t even responded to the complaint. SMH!!!

My husband and I have purchased cars from Carmax and nowhere else since 2008. Although prices on vehicles are slightly higher than other places, we've been loyal to carmax due to outstanding customer service in the past. Our experience this time with Capital Blvd Raleigh location was extremely bad. So bad that Carmax has lost our loyalty. We needed to buy two cars and had plans to buy both at Carmax. We noticed the process has changed a lot so it seems like Carmax has streamlined to reduce cost of manpower causing extremely bad customer service. The sales manager lacks care to our concerns and just wanted us to complete the transaction so that he could push us over to someone else's responsiblity (service). Not only did he not hear our concerns and did not address them, when he handed us off to service area, there is some kind of communication disconnect there as well. They kept the car after we had already purchased to "check out" the concerns. We got a call three business days later to come pick it up so when I got there, no one in the service center knew about my car being there to be checked out. I had to have them go find Kejuan the sales manager for them to find my car. Kejuan came and said that he had told my husband about all the items they addressed so I took his word for it. When I got home, my husband asked me if they fixed everything and I said that Kejuan said he talked to him so that's why I didn't ask anything. My husband said Kejuan did not tell him anything. We discovered a lot of items not taken care of after looking at the car again. We called the carmax corporate number to complain and the person there was great. We were contacted quickly by Kavon the service manager who gave us the customer service attention that we had experienced in years past and that we are used to with Carmax. We emphasized that we do not live that close so wanted to limit how many times we drive there to get serviced since it is adding miles which takes away from our maxcare warranty. He scheduled our appointment to service it and we agreed to 8am on a Friday morning so that he could get us in and out as soon as he could that day and he said if we needed a loaner while we waited that he would help us with that ...but when my husband showed up at 8am that morning, Kavon was not working and the ladies that were there said that Kavon did not tell them we were coming at 8am so they refused to touch the car until 10 and he sat in the waiting area and had to hear them talking and joking making him feel uncomfortable and not happy about how he was being treated. By 12pm, my husband followed up on the car and they said should be done soon. By 1pm he inquired about a loaner because he can't sit there all day and the response was absolutely not. By 2pm he inquired again and pushed harder about a loaner since this is taking so long and was told no again and magically the car is "ready". They give him the car and only some items were addressed while all the other items that Kavon said would also be taken care of was not. We are so upset because if we wanted these items fixed then we have to come back out for another service visit. My husband called the corporate carmax number again saying we don't want to have to drive back out here to have the rest fixed and wanted them to keep the car and give us a loaner until they resolved it all. The corporate number called the Capital Blvd Raleigh branch and called him back saying that branch won't do it unless the car was not driveable due to a safety concern. So now we are just so upset that since we are in the 30 day return window, we wanted to return it just due to the extremely bad customer service. We cooled off and due to not wanting to do too much to impact my credit history, I've decided that we can keep this car but are now no longer loyal to carmax. We have purchased a second car from another dealership that is not carmax since this experience due to the loss of our loyalty. The Capital Blvd Raleigh branch has made it clear that maintaining our loyalty to Carmax is not important.

It is best that one does his homework before buying a car from CarMax. Their prices are non-negotiable and are on the high side compared to private party sales and other car dealers. If you purchase and finance a car with lenders in its network, the interest rate is nearly four times the rate of that offered by one's own financial institution. CarMax does not let you check out the car with an outside source before purchasing it. The sales persons are not honest and reliable. Thus, it is not recommended that one buy a car from CarMax. Only one with money to burn and who don't mind being ripped off and taken advantage of would buy a car from CarMax.

What? ---- no zero star rating I can give CARMAX? I am so stupid for not reading reviews before I went with check in hand to buy a car! (They have terrible reviews.) They got me in the door with a lie that had me pay "Shipping" for a car to be delivered to my area (KOP). Lorrain G emailed to ask if I have any questions about the vehicle. Yes, "Does, it smell like smoke, Lorrain? NO, no smoke noted." Pretty straightforward question and answer. Well, it smelled like a stinkbomb of smoke odor. The light-colored leather back seats had two large, ugly very rusty "rail" marks from a child seat placed there. I was supposed to pay $25 grand for a piece of filthy crap? Yes, according to them. No one had even looked at anything in that car, much less inspected anything. It was such an easy sale, but they had to lie and claim everything's great! After taking it home for the 24 hour to see how bad it was, we returned the car. I emailed Lorrain G about the smoke issue and somehow, she is not to be heard from again!!!! Oh, Lorrain, Lorrain - you have no intention on answering me after I politely called you out on your "incorrect" answer to my question. Why am I polite to LIARS? What a SCAM. I am an oldster who does not have money to pay for fraud. DO NOT BUY from CARMAX - DON'T EVEN Look At the Cars online, they lie on anything they feel like. Their ad for this car said new tires, well, when we pulled out of the parking lot, the car skidded all over. I don't drive cars with crappy tires so they would have to be replaced even though they were listed as "New". What a waste of human space - and a giant waste of time. I cannot think of enough insults to describe this place. I really thought they might be different and if they are the best of used car buying, that's telling you something - or nothing! I feel for everyone getting bamboozled by CARMAX. Out the money I can't afford, who cares, certainly NOT "CARE-NOT" CARMAX. Better find another way..., or you'll be very sorry. You don't the have time or the heart to have to write a review like I've had to do. Try somewhere else.

I wouldn’t work at Carmax Winston Salem location for all the money in the world! They had me wait for an interview on Thursday at 2pm. I waited and never got the call! I will make sure this is reported and posted all over the internet. After reviewing this company its a Sorry location and its reflected everywhere. The scam work thats hidden on their cars and parts installed from junkyards are a disgrace. Read all reviews across the country. Winston Salem and Greensboro are awful! Thank god they never called, its a high turnover job and if you look they are always hiring. I visited the Winston Salem location and I could see the trash they covered up now that I know what to look for from past and current employees. They even spray paint the carpets.

I recently traded my car to Carmax Lithia Springs, GA for a 2019 Jeep Cherokee that would not accelerate on the highway. Carmax failed to conduct an adequate assessment of this vehicle before selling it to me putting me and my family at risk for an accident. When I returned the car less than 24 hours later, the manager refused to return my trade and advised that if I wanted to keep my GA trade in tax credit, I would have to buy another car from them. I searched the Carmax site for a week looking for another Jeep comparable to my original purchase, but didn't find any with both a clear title and a clean Carfax report. Needing a car asap for medical visits and other essential travel, I purchased a car from another dealer and subsequently lost my opportunity for the GA tax credit. I later discovered that Carmax could have and should have returned my car upon request but didn't . At the time of purchase, I was informed that I had 3 days to return the vehicle, but was never advised that I couldn't get my car back. After weeks of broken promises, wasted time, and being lied to, Carmax refused to make this right by providing compensation for my loss. I have made multiple unsuccessful attempts to resolve this issue with the location's General Manager Greg F and their customer care team member Kay. I believe I have been taken advantage of after reading several Twitter post describing similar unscrupulous aquisitons of trade-in cars from other consumers.

Scheduled a test drive 2 days before driving 2 1/2 hours to Omaha Carmax dealer, arrived on time and had to wait, salesperson was just sitting there did not help us. Sat down and we told them a cash sale no finance. At that point the wheels fell off, had to see all proper insurance which we had, then only 20 minute test drive, they went to get car and it was filthy, got inside to drive vehicle was dirty, leftover food in car, still were going to buy the car, then wouldnt except check, then they wanted to see how much in account, then that wasnt good enough, I said you are really trying for a bad review, The salesman said i have had plenty. This was probably the worst experience I have ever had at a dealership, and my daughters worst too. We will never go back!!! Drove to different dealership found comparable car and purchased without the huge headache from Carmax

The way car buying should not be. We found a car online at carmax and sent a request. In a little while someone texted me from Carmax. We chatted for a little while and decided to reserve the vehicle for a test drive. I was told that it was reserved for me. I specifically asked again if it would be available when we arrived. I was assured that it would be, it was reserved for me at 7:15 Friday evening. Friday evening the traffic was heavy, it was raining, we drove 45 minutes to get to Carmax. Within a few minutes of speaking with our sales person we were told that the car was being transferred, there was nothing they could do. The sales person saw our conversation on the screen and my specific question about availability. Apparently the girl did not reserve it or the system failed. We were pretty irritated and swore never to use Carmax again. We cooled off, found another car at Carmax. We decided to try again. Carmax shipped a car in for us to NC from PA, no charge due to the mixup. Anyway when it arrived it is supposed to be detailed and checked out. We went down to do a test drive, it was raining again. We wanted to do the 24 hour test drive but since we didnt have our complete insurance declaration we could only do a 20 min. drive. We liked the car, we decided that we would purchase it and if we found something later we could return it. We traded our car and gave them 5k cash and financed the rest. The next morning once the car had dried we found multiple scratches all over the car, looked like from shipping. We were pretty let down. This should have been found by whomever checked it in. We contemplated returning it, the navigation system locked up frequently, it idled rough and had all the scratches. We called Carmax and they asked us to bring it down to look at the scratches. The service manager asked my wife to drop it off on Sunday and assured her they would go over the car with a fine tooth comb. They would detail it and fix the scratches. No worries. We drove down again on Sunday, dropped off the car, now 3 trips 45 min away. Monday they called and said the car was ready, then changed it to ready in an hour and a half. We told them no rush, take your time we want it done right, we will be there on Tuesday. We went down on Tuesday now 4 trips. We went in and got the keys, went to get the car. None of the scratches had been fixed, it was covered in a powder I am assuming from trying to buff out the scratches and it had not been detailed. Of course we had to get the service people out to look at it. We were told, Oh Im sorry, we will get it now, might not be able to get the big scratches and we will run it through the wash. What ? We were very irritated again. Of course we had to see the same service manager again, who told us not to worry, he told us the scratches were too big, they didnt meet some criteria for something. Our options from him were to accept it or return the car. We returned the car right then. But we were only given a check for our trade in, they said the cash would come in 7-10 days. We were down one car because we traded it to them, now they were keepin 5k of our down payment for 7-10 days. We dont have our full downpayment for another car, but they have our trade in and cash. So Carmax dropped the ball several times at our expense. I have to say smiling and being nice the whole way. I cannot recommend them. We went out of our way to make it work, but in the end were worse off than when we started, down a car, down a down payment and 4 trips - 45 min each way. I sure hope the guy who started this company because his daughter had a bad experience at a dealership knows what is going on at Carmax now.

You would think that with a fixed price on the car you would not have used car salesmen games. You would be wrong. We walked into the dealership with a pre-approved loan from ally through the CarMAX website. 'Hugo' SEEMED NICE. He was not. He runs a check to see if he can get us an offer with nothing down. I ask him 'will we still have our existing offer'. He says' yeah we will just run it again the offer should still be there. He extends to us a criminal offer of 12 percent interest. We say no. He runs it again (we've been there waiting for 2 hours now Typical used car salesman ploy) We wait and wait and wait, finally I go to get my daughter some food. Low and behold when I get back he cant get my original offer to return. Why????? If you get an offer extended from CarMAX, it nullifies your original offer through the CarMAX website. Now let me ask you a question...What do you think the odds are that a guy who does this everyday, knows that the system is setup to do that? Did you know that CarMAX sales guys do get a commission? Since the price is Haggle free.....care to guess what that commission is based on? Hugo knows we've driven hours to get there and knows we paid to have the car shipped from another dealership. In short he has us over a barrel. He sees how bad my wife wants the car. In the end we get new very reasonable financing external to CarMAX. We buy the vehicle. Long story short.....Dont think for one second you can trust CarMAX. Also VA Beach CarMAX charges 400 dollar processing fee.....They make you pay 400 dollars to sit and wait while they play games.

Carmax does not sell with integrity. They will advertise like they do and talk like they do but when it comes down to it they do not. We were interested in a car we test drove that had a sticker price of $24k and when we sat down to buy the car we were advised it was the wrong sticker for that car and the car we test drove and were interested in was $28k. They would not honor (operative word of our point) the $24k price tag. We understand mistakes happen, but please own your mistake and rectify it. We did not even get a "sorry" for the 3 hours we wasted. Disappointed to have to part ways with the car and Carmax. Please do better, and the right thing, for the next client that walks into Carmax. Regards.

First time experience with CarMax in Draper, one of the worst. Greg W, the general manager needs to be trained by his own Sales manager/customer sales rep with customer service. I do not trust this company after finding out that their corporate offices send out pay off checks via snail mail, not even certified mail. No one was able to provide a routing number to track the check down. CarMax has had my car since November 19th and my bank has yet to receive a pay off check. Just in time for the holidays so, very appreciative for that. I guess "my hands are tied too" is this when I call the police since you guys have property and have yet to pay for it?

I do not recommend dealing with Carmax under any circumstances the local sales team is great but the people in Richmond and the accounting people are cheats. They are are disconnected and arrogant. We purchased a car through Carmax and thought it was a done deal. Unfortunately to our surprise 60 days after the deal was done, and The original contracts were signed Carmax hadn’t deposit the letter of credit from the bank which had a 30 day expiration. When they did finally decide to deposit the letter of credit to purchase the car the bank said it was past the 30 days and it was no longer valid. Carmax refused to cooperate with the bank to do another contract and threatened to have the car repossessed If the bank wouldn’t extend the original payment . Now I don’t know how many of you have tried to work with banks but they’re not real quick to want to help customers. Even though the customer did everything right. So now were in a position because Carmax didn’t do what they were supposed to do we have to get the bank to make a new contract otherwise they’re going to repossess our car. of course now the interest rates have changed because the original contract was a month ago so do yourself a favor do not buy a car through these people I’ve already got the attorney Looking into them for fraud.

CarMax offered to buy my car even if I didn't buy one from them. I found that taking them up on the offer was more trouble than it was worth. My situation was the following: 1) I am the trustee of my deceased parent's trust 2) I have all of the trust documents, probate court decree, death certificates, EIN number, that are legally required for me to sell my parent's car (owned by their trust) 3) I took the car to be appraised by CarMax 6 days before taking it to sell it to them (appraisal was valid 7 days) 4) The trust did not specifically list the car (by VIN number) as a trust asset. CarMax claims that the VIN number must be in the trust document (I can't find an attorney who agrees). If you are trying to liquidate the assets of someone else's trust, I recommend you steer clear of CarMax. After expending two hours of time, I still hadn't been able to meet their demands for documentation (including notarized proof of survivorship). They had taken copies of part of the trust document, death certificates, and took my driver's license. I finally decided to sell the car privately. The car is in great condition (luxury car with 5,700 miles). No accidents and no damage. I'll get more money selling it myself and will likely spend less time than I wasted on CarMax. If you've read this review, you have been warned. My conscience is clear. Good luck selling your car another way! You will be glad you did.

Unfortunately, this was an absolutely horrible experience. From the time I went to purchase this vehicle in Davie, FL (4 hours away) on 2/9/2020 until now. I have driven the car less than 2 days! I was lied about the condition of the vehicle, what would be done to fix it, and god only knows what else. When I went to purchase the vehicle, I asked how much damage was on the car. (Rock chips, scratches, dents, dings, etc) I was told by the sales lady Teri at the Sanford location that they did a walk around and stated no issues. (She later stated it was impossible for a 2014 to not be damaged) which we all know is an IGNORANT response. When I arrived in Davie, FL at the CarMax there I met with a salesman John R. who seemed rather nice (Toooo nice) and wanted to speed through the process. (Redflag 1). The car that I WAS PURCHASING was in the dark, not washed, and looks like it was done on purpose. The first thing I noticed was the headlights being foggy, then hairline scratches underneath the clear coat. I know this kind of damage can't be repaired by buffing but I bring it up to John who states he would have it all fixed (including headlights) when I arrive back in Central Florida. He assured me and over and over that it went through the 125+ point inspection and it was a GREAT CAR! I asked him again about the vehicle as I need something dependable to take my mother to cancer treatments etc.. Upon going over the car, there were a few other things and he stated the same thing. Great, as much as I'm peeved by it, I have been wanting this M235i for quite some time. After the paperwork was done, I walk outside and they drove my car through a carwash tunnel vs handwashing it and detailing it. (Talk about lazy!) I was told by John that CarMax was cheap and they got rid of the detail department as a whole. He was not lying! They had to aim headlights at my car from another vehicle so they could see it to dry it! Glass was still dirty, the interior was disgusting, it was a mess and there was no offer to get it detailed. Fast forward. The following day I am on my way home from picking my mother up at her treatment. It was at this moment I have one of the scariest moments driving a vehicle. We are cruising the speed limit when the vehicle immediately loses almost all of its power and goes into what they call limp mode. The car goes from around 65 miles an hour to 40. Scarier yet is I have a fully loaded dump truck behind me which almost slams into my mother and I in this car. Now, I would have possibly survived with severe injury by my 70-year-old mother would have been hurt critically! Scared the he** out of me! Immediately following this I reach out to my sales lady Teri in Sanford and tell her what happened and asked when service would be open? She doesn't give a da** if we are okay, how my mother is, just that the service center is open at 7 pm. So, I share some words with her and then take the vehicle in at around 7:30 am the next morning. Around 2/3 hours later the service advisor comes out and tells me the charge pipe was destroyed and it was common. I asked her if it was so common, why did they not check it as part of the 125 point inspection. She hinted that they should have but didn't put the dealership into complete liability mode. Now, as I have 7 days to return it I reached out to CarMax and it's the executive team to see if they could help locate me a car that has actually been checked. I had several people reach out and none of them would help. Enter the CARMAX EXPERIENCE. During the time that I am reaching out to them, they advise me that since they are helping me with this car that they would not help locate me another car. Then in one email, I was told they WOULD help me with finding a car then 1 paragraph later told they would not. (I can provide the email). They then agreed to fix the car properly (body work) etc... so I went to pick up my vehicle. LOW AND BEHOLD my car was damaged on the rear deck lid, front right wheel, the headlights they were supposed to repair they did a horrible job, I had scratches on the door handle and side of the car, and WAIT FOLKS - IT GETS BETTER (They had wet sanded and BURNED BY PAINT) trying to get the hairline scratches out of the paint! To bad I can't provide my YT to see the videos, its hideous what they did. I asked the sales manager to take a look and he refused to take a look at it. He was a complete ***. I immediately send the video and photos to the service manager who stated he would fix all of the issues, have this in email. The car is now at the body shop where it's been since last week. I also received a call the next day after dropping it off. They had pulled the underbelly off and oil poured out all over the place from various points on the car.

I bought a car 3 months ago thru CarMax autofinancing. 2 weeks ago i had a accident and my insurance company has stated car as total loss. They gave me 2 option, to keep the vehicle and to pay CarMax value of car before accident - salvage value = 3221$ Or they want pay to carmax 4500$+ and they keep the vehicle. I choosed the option 1. But talking with CarMax about a option to use that check of 3221$ to repair the car, they told me that if i want to keep the vehicle i have to pay 7000$+ (remaining balance of the lease) When i asked them where is that stated in the contract, that they are allowed to request full amount in upfront if i have any damages on car, they put me on hold for 1h30min and transfered me over 2 departments in that time. At the end i was talking with "supervisor" and she "explained me" that it is stated in their internal policy which is not available on their website neither do in my contract/paperwork that i got from them. She said that i never signed and never was awared of that, and i dont need to sign something like that but i cannot get access to my car if i dont pay 7000+$ in upfront. Now i have to hire the lawyer and to go on court with this company while my car is not in my possession and im still paying monthly rate for car and for insurance. Im using my car to work for UberEATS, DoorDash , PostMate. I cannot work , and i have to pay car in one week! Again, i never was awared that they are allowed to request payment in upfront remaining balance if i have ANY damages on the car, even if that is a total loss (i have already ordered parts to make car drive able) I NEVER SIGNED SOMETHING AS THAT, I NEVER WOULD! These information are not available ANYWHERE on the date 20. February 2020. ! I dont know how that can be legal ! Im considering this as heavy fraud ! ontracts about buying a car are long, but there is NEITHER THE ONE section talking about that they have law right to do this. I dont understand why they acted as this in my situation because i would keep paying my monthly rate and after my lease is over, title of the car would be mine as the car ofc. So it is not really matter for them in what condition car would be. But i cannot accept that there is some "INTERNAL POLICY" where customer is not awared of anything what is in there and it is affecting the whole contract that i have signed with them. Why we are signing the contract anyway ?? when they can write whatever they want in their "INTERNAL POLICY"

I truly hate having to give a negative review on any one Company but this one Company ( Carmax ) really seriously deserves it. To begin my journey at Carmax on the first day ever when I first walked in, I test drove 5 cars I was interested in. Out of the 5 cars I drove that day, 4 cars were in need of desperate repair, ( what are the chances of this possibility, 4 out of 5 cars being bad, WOW ). One car would not start even when jumped by the salesman. This car was a 2018 Lincoln Navigator priced at $34,500 and would not even make a sound when being jumped. The second car that I test drove was a 2018 GORGEOUS! Honda accord. The car truly was stunning but the WORST was just about to let itself be known! The Automatic transmission was not engaging in third gear and we had to pull over and turn around and drive 10 miles per hour to get back to Carmax. Well, to make a long story short. I did purchase a 2017 Limited Kia Sorento at $27,300 only because my Wife begged me to,,,,,,,she said their Customer service was excellent ( she was correct about that ) but the cars they were selling were poorly sellected by their buyers. The Kia Sorento has had more service than all of my cars put together in the past 28 years. Their SLOGAN in the commercials says " We buy cars,,,WE BUY ALL THE CARS " and they truly are not exaggerating,,,they buy ANY and ALL THE CARS, weather good or ABSOLUTELY going bad!! If your thinking about Carmax as a possible choice, please look elsewhere or at least pay a license mechanic to inspect the car or truck your interested in from Carmax. Shop around and you'll notice that they are the HIGHEST priced dealership anywhere. To make matters worse, the HIGHEST priced and with the absolute worst mechanically conditioned automobiles around. Save yourself the HUGE expense and time of visiting repair garages time and time again to keep your Carmax purchase running!

Over the years I had heard that Carmax was a trusted company that I could depend on, so when it came time to buy a car I went to them first. I was not ready to purchase a new vehicle and I was aware that they inspected their cars before offering them for sale. I went in and was shown several options and ended up setting on a Toyota Matrix. I had owned Toyotas and they were always dependable. At signing I was notified that I would want to take care of the airbag recall after purchase, which I have done. within a week of driving off the lot I notice the car had began to shake when braking. I scheduled an appointment with their service department and they examined the brake and told me nothing was wrong. I left for work unsatisfied and continued to drive the car and the shaking got so bad that it literally rattled my teeth. I went back in and had the same results. Nothing is wrong. They acted like I insane. I wrote to corporate and never received a response. The 30 days lapsed and I was no longer covered by their warranty. I went to an independent garage and was told that all four drums were shot and that the front brakes needed replacing. I had this done, obviously for safety, and sent corporate another letter through their portal. Again nothing. I have sent a total of three letters to them informing them of my experience and if their lack of response is any indication, I can only assume that they do not care. I would strongly urge anyone considering doing business with this company to reconsider. In my experience there is little to no difference between them and most other used car dealers out there. I am sure that most of the cars they sell are OK, but if you are one of the unlucky ones to get a car in the condition that I did, do not expect them to do the right thing.

Absolutely terrible experience with Carmax and their home delivery method. Took over two weeks to complete a transaction, that took only 4 days with Carvana. Asked upfront to have the vehicle inspected and make sure there were no issues or smells from smokers. After have 3 different people asking for different items and some of the same items, it finally was set up for delivery. Was buying the car for my daughter. She was really excited! It shows up and car looked great, BUT as soon as she opened the door, she gasped back and was shocked at the smell. I went to see if it was something fixable, an NO, there was no fixing the unbelievable smell that came from this car. After waisting my time working thru their inconsistent and awkward process for 2 weeks, setting up a loan and getting a certified check and insurance policy in place, we have noting to show for it or the disappointment in my daughter face. Absolutely a terrible experience and Carmax should be ashamed they even showed up to my house with a car that stunk so bad of smoke. Will never do business with them and will refer everyone to Carvana.

I would like to inform you all of the horrible customer service I received from the business manager at the Tallahassee location. I spoke with the office there to cancel my warranty. He was ok, but seemed unsure of the knowledge he was giving me, as if he were very new to the job. I then asked to speak to his manager so that I can just be sure that the information was indeed correct. The manager then get on the phone and immediately was irritated as if i interrupted his day. I asked him to verify the information that i had been given from the previous person and he gave me some very different info. He was very passive aggressive, condescending, rude and abrasive. He informed me that I will need to drive down to the office (after I told him several times that I live in GA not FL and it's a 4hr drive) and fill out the paperwork. I said thats was not be possible for me to do and he then said "well that's the only way we do it and there nothing I can do for you, soooo." I insisted that there must be a way around that since I live in another state. He Then became even more obnoxiously rude while stating "well that is the only way, we cant help" (several times, each time more rude than the last). I then simply asked him for his name, he said "Cliff". I asked for his last name, he said "I dont have to give you my last name" (with a nasty tone to say the very least). The I said well,  ok, may I have you last initial, he said "no, I dont have to give you anything". Then I said well with you being the business office manager you should be able to provide me with your office contact number. At that point he said "LOOK, Im not giving you any of my information, thats too personal, you no getting anything outta me!". I was beyond hurt and horribly offended by this. I felt he was the most unprofessional person I had encounter in my life and I have not even met him in person. I simply informed him that he would hear about this later and he hung up on me. He even then sent an e-mail to me with a picture of a written note (so that I could not get his information in the signature of the email) I will attach a picture of that in this email or a separate one. This was a very petty and childish move on his part and he is failing this team and Carmax as a whole with his actions. There in no telling the numbers of people he treats so poorly. I truly feel sorry for any one who has to work with this person and a customer, employee or co-worker. There needs to be corrective action immediately. I had such a great experience with Carmax until this very moment. I have friends and family in the Tallahassee area who are looking to purchase and I definitely would not recommend them or even a stranger too that place. I will also be leaving a complaint on the BBB, Google and everywhere else I can to warn people about that "Cliff" person and to be ware of dealing with him. I am so sad to even have to take time out of my work day and type this long e-mail. But this is how upset I cam and I will go out of my way to make sure this does not happen to any other customer.

2016 Chevy traverse Lt I purchased the vehicle January 16 2019 .after 1 week driving the vehicle the A/C unit went out , I made appointment with carmax, they said the easiest appointment they have is in March for the repair. So the repair was made, now in August my check engine light is on again ( P0496 code) emissions problem now with sign on the dash low tire pressure have a hole on the side wall of the tire. So now I scheduled appointment again. The service rep said the easiest available appointment they have is 3weeks out again. Of course I said I will take it 9/3/2019 . At that time the service rep said, it's now out of warranty, and they can't help me with anything. With only 5000 miles my wife but on the vehicle sense we bought it from Carmax. With a bad experience with service center please read this before you buy a vehicle from carmax. I think wrong vehicle from the wrong place. NO HELP FROM CARMAX MURRIETA. MY LOSS THERE GAIN!

NEVER NEVER NEVER AGAIN! Got sold a prius. Bad fuses, bad wheels, needs maintenance within 2k miles after getting it, I've spent more on repairs on this POS before my first payment was even due!!!! Where was Carmax? wouldn't return my calls, their service dept is CRAP from start to finish, if they even picked up their phone or hell, even call you back! Good luck with that! I'm now stuck with a parked care making crazy payments on it. You want a car that doesn't work/needs work and you have to spend more than you paid for the car on top of the car price, go to CARMAX where they pretend to be fair only for you to find out they were raping you from the start! Never again! I got better and more honest treatment from a hole in the wall dealer!

BUYER BEWARE—Tampa Short story version- Never again, CARMAX . Have had my 2016 suburban for 6 months with close to $6,000.00 or more worth of repairs since purchase. 1)Radio unit-replaced twice — original unit shorted out, Carmax vendor replaced and then apparently damaged the first replacement as it never functioned properly..started shorting out just like the first unit-we suspect he either pulled the unit, already damaged, from a wrecked vehicle, or damaged the new unit during install. Brake vacuum assist failure Rough idle from the start that Carmax told us was within normal range. Told us to have this newly purchased $40+K car towed to Carmax should it die on us. This turned out to be 2 bad fuel injectors, 2 damaged hoses, and bad engine mounts fixed, in order to get the problem corrected, through Chevy. 2 bent rims High Frequency antenna —water intrusion, shorting out. We bought a 2016 Suburban LTZ November 9th of 2018. When we got it home we noticed that the radio unit was malfunctioning. GPS would “glitch” us out into the ocean, and would stop working in the middle of driving somewhere leaving us scrambling for exits. Carmax agreed to replace. It took weeks for them to get the radio unit in, but I drove the 1.5hrs back to Carmax. I was less than a mile away when they called to let me know that the radio vendor did NOT in fact have the unit and they would need to reschedule me. SO I turned around and went back home. It took another couple weeks to get the unit in and I went back down and the vendor installed it. When he left the car there were scratches on the plastic around the radio, a large gap behind the moveable valet/radio area, and the inside of the valet box was completely cracked. I was upset, but had to leave to go pick up my child. I sent my service advisor an email with pictures of the damage their vendor had done. She told me she would have the vendor fix the damage. This took more weeks of waiting, and they offered to have him come to my house to do the repair rather than make another trip to carmax. He came out and replaced cracked valet box, but not the scratched/damaged area or fix the gap behind the unit. Within weeks of him replacing the valet box this “new (?questionable)” unit started shorting out in the same manner as the original unit. We finally took this to the Chevy dealer to have it fixed/replaced after having HORRIBLE lengthy repairs done at Carmax. —The brake assist light came on the first time just past our 30days repair period with Carmax, so we took it to the Chevy dealer (also not wanting to risk driving that far on potentially faulty breaks). This was approx $1400 repair. —From the start we noticed an unusually rough idle once the engine was warm, and while stopped at stop lights. Carmax said that the idle was within normal limits.. After expressing concern to my service advisor about it feeling like it was going to die at stop-lights she told me just have it towed back to them if it did die. The idle became much worse over time as the weather and the engine warmed. I also noticed a clunk when changing between gears at lower speeds. At this point, we decided to start having the Chevy dealer look at the idle issue, because I didn’t want to be stranded somewhere along the freeway with children. They first tried to do a fuel injection cleaning to see if that would fix the issue. It did not. $300+bill. They found 2 bad fuel injectors, 2 damaged hoses, and bad motor mounts All those plus another radio unit replacement (an actual NEW one this time), and a replacement antenna came to $4600. Chevy rotated my tires because they noticed a lot of road noise on the test drive before returning the vehicle to me and they found 2 bent rims as well My husband has been in touch with Car max multiple times during this whole process. The first time he contacted them, was when the break assist went out, and they were trying to figure out what was wrong with the idle. They agreed to pay that $1800 bill, and sent us a check. Now that we know the extent of all the repairs, they are saying they will only reimburse us for the cost of the second radio unit ($695) but not for labor costs, nor for the fuel injectors, hoses, antenna, (motor mounts were the only thing under manufacturers warranty). They believe we should have continued to bring the car back to them to fix, despite us giving them MULTIPLE chances to make things right. We told them their shoddy service/vendors/workmanship is what kept us from bringing it back. I m still hopeful that they’ll make it right. There is ZERO excuse for all the issues that have happened with this 3 year old, expensive vehicle. There also doesn’t seem to be any way that this car was inspected in the manor that Carmax claims to infect all of their cars before selling.

After many months of searching for a Mercedes E350 I had located one at my local store. I went to the store and met with a sales representative and was very satisfied with what I found. Per his instructions I went home and placed a hold on the vehicle so that my wife could see it at a letter date. Once I placed the hold I immediately received a call from a sales rep. who stated that he would take me through the purchase process. We set an appointment for a few days later. When I went with my wife to make the purchase we found that the car we had looked at was gone and a hold was placed on a different car. The salesman checked and found the vehicle that I looked at had a transfer pending on it and basically there was nothing he could do about it. Needles to say after months of searching for a vehicle that met my criteria I was more than pissed. Based on my experience and the fact that the manager never left her desk to offer any type of assistance I would never do business with this company nor recommend them to any friend.

I will NEVER do business with CarMax again and I suggest you think twice before you do. The return period policy is much too short. In my case I co-signed for a loan with CarMax to help my son get a car. The return period policy did not allow enough time for his insurance company to get back with him with the new premium amount. Once it did and we discovered that it would be prohibitively expensive, we were forced to return the car. He had the car for 30 days (we had first brought it back after a much shorter time) and we are being charged over $2,000 for his having had the car for one month. I feel like I have been robbed, no really violated in a most inappropriate way. So my caveat is that one go into such a transaction with eyes wide open because you are going to get royally SCREWED like I did if you have to return the car after 5 days. I used to have some confidence in this company, but no more. I am on my way to the dealership now to receive the proverbial rubber glove treatment. I will be advising all of my friends and family from now on to avoid CarMax.

DO NOT BUY MAXCARE!! Purchased a vehicle in 2016 with 14k miles on it. Was pushed to purchase the policy for my vehicle even tho my car was under manufacture warranty. Car sales guy told me it would not take effect until AFTER the manufacture warranty expired giving me an additional 60 months and 15k miles of coverage. THIS IS A LIE! He also told me I would be able to get a refund for the policy if I didn’t use it. I sold the vehicle in 2018 and have been working with HORRIBLE customer service giving me the run around for 3 weeks. Still NO REFUND!! Yet, The car sales men make A BONUS is you get the policy. When you call customer services the person you speak to will only be there for one week. I’ve spoken to 4-5 different people all telling me something different. DO NOT PURCHASE MAXCARE POLICY!! Waste of money and HORRIBLE customer service. BAD BUSINESS POLICY. DONT FALL FOR IT!!!!

In early June 2018 the car was totaled. Nationwide Insurance Agency finally got a check to Carmax to pay off the vehicle in August 2018. Carmax began calling me in September 2018 stating that I was behind on my payments. I explained the situation and they stated that the check had been returned, not paid. I contacted Emily Gates at Nationwide and she provided Carmax with the cleared check. Carmax contacted me again in October, stating the same thing. I said the cleared check had been sent. They said it had not, though Nationwide showed me where it had. So I contacted Nationwide again, I also asked Carmax, while this is under investigation to not report this to the credit agencies as they over and over again said it looked like an issue on their end. Nationwide sent another cleared check and sent me a copy as well. The cleared check is quite obviously stating the bank has paid the amount in question. I had never missed a payment in 4 years. Not a single one late or short. In fact, I paid extra each payment. Carmax has since reported this, resulting in my credit dropping 77 points. It's 60 days overdue. Carmax just keeps telling me every three days that they are 'looking into it'. They have made no resolution, yet keep reporting this to the credit agencies. I had to buy another car when that one was totaled, I am not able to make extra car payments until this is settled, since Nationwide has settled it. They have paid the car, the funds left their bank and Carmax is fighting and saying the check was returned, but has no proof of this. Meanwhile, Nationwide has a CLEARED check. We have both asked Carmax to provide documentation as to the 'returned' check, they will not do so.

AVOID CARMAX ON ALPHARETTA HIGHWAY IN ROSWELL GEORGIA AT ALL COSTS!!!!! My Kia Sportage died a few weeks ago which forced us to buy a new and larger family car sooner than anticipated. We immediately jumped to carmax since they could bring a car in out of state for us as well as be rest assured the car was mechanically sound. We purchased outright via check a 2016 Ford Expedition el. Although the purchase process went very smoothly we hit a brick wall upon having the car inspected. We took the car to our local auto shop and had them give us a good once over so we could tell carmax what had to be done (if anything) for no cost via their 30 day auto service policy following a purchase. There was no major work to be done however the tire life was questionably close to the required pierce stage gone requiring carmax to put new tires on the car for no additional cost. My husband made the appointment and dropped the car off. The appointment was at 8am and we were told the car would be done by 1030 or so. Jon called from work, now the car would not be ready until 1230. No problem. He called again, car would not be ready until 230, this continued with no explanation until 430 when Jon called and said he was coming to get the car done or not. Upon arrival no customer service was given. No straight answers as to why a few things (alignment, tire balance, new windshield wiper) took all day long even with repeated calls. To our dismay the tires also measured just over the required sale tire life. Josh, the manager in the service department was called in and told Jon he would give us the tires at their cost price to make amends for being jerked around all day. Jon was to wait for a call the following day (Friday, a week after purchasing the car). Jon waited, no call. He called at 6pm while we were on our way to dinner. He was informed that josh was on his way out the door. Jon told whomeever picked the phone up that he was angry, had been forgotten once again, and if they wanted our continued service josh better pick the phone up and answer his questions. After rudely being put on hold josh answered. Jon reiterated that he had waited for a call all day, and now once again he was forced to chase carmax around for an answer. All we needed to know was the cost of the tires and when to expect them in. Josh told Jon he would leave a message for another manager in the service department who would coordinate with Jon Monday morning. Jon specifically asked if josh could confirm someone would call him given their already horrible reputation for not returning calls. Josh confirmed "not to worry". Monday comes and goes. Jon called once again on Tuesday demanding to know what is going on, demanding to talk to a higher manager. No customer service has been offered to us since leaving their store with the new car. The store manager Kenny G talks to Jon and apoalgizes and tells him that the tires will be taken care of. He will contact him Wednesday. We have had it. Today is Wednesday. Today Kenny G has told us the best he can do is give us a $500 credit toward the tires. At this point we cannot take them at their word for anything! We didn't expect free tires. We were happy to pay their cost as originally agreed to. No one could get us Jose numbers or order the tires. Well now we want free tires and to never work with them again! Even after Jon told Kenny G that we will no longer purchase cars from them ( Jon needs a new car come October and has purchase in full with cash two other cars in the past from the same location). Kenny G is willing to lose a lifetime customer over a few hundred dollars, a horrible customer service. What is he willing to do next? He is a terrible manager and should be removed. After all of this, Kenny G did nothing else but hang up mid sentence on my husband. What kind of store manager does that?! Avoid carmax on Alpharetta highway in Roswell ga at all costs. They only want your money and then drop you at the wayside when it comes to upholding their end of auto service for 30 days free.

I purchased a Fiat Pop from them that was supposed to have a clean record, I got it home and the next day there was an error that effected the emissions test. I brought it in, they turned off the error, so I took it to the mechanics and found out that the car had been in an accident and had at least the bumper rebuilt. They are neither trustworthy nor honest

CARMAX is a big buy here pay here store. If you are considering buying a car from CARMAX beware....get every detail in writing they have memory loss issues. Read all the reviews on Yelp and Consumer Affairs. If I had read them before I would have bought elsewhere. I will never buy another car from CARMAX Clearwater or any other on the planet. Not Trustworthy in my opinion.

I bought a 2011 VW Jetta, in 2017. In addition, the extended warranty they push you to buy. However, my car, still under warranty, had trouble with the transmission, and needed a clutch. I had to pay my deductible for the transmission, which was from a junkyard, and they DID not cover the clutch, costing me $1400 out of pocket. Do not purchase the extended warranty, it is not worth it! You are better off buying a brand new car, with a full coverage warranty!

I would never buy a car from CarMax over charging people for cars that's been in car accidents overcharging them in finance CarMax is a mess they are liars they're not a good company at all and I suggest that you find another company to buy a car from. I would never recommend CarMax for anybody and I mean anybody

Its almost like they don't want too sell a customer a vehicle. They say I need proof of residency. I have E statements with address, Pay-stubs with address, and my drivers license with The Matching address, and it's not accepted as proof of residency. So continuing else were.

Terrible company! They tell you no fees are added, car is at rock bottom price. This is all lies! They charge double the interest even with a perfect 800 credit score and add extra crap! Ridiculous and a huge waste of time, terrible staff!

After obtaining an offer from our car from CARMAX via Edmunds online service. providing all of the information CARMAX requested and arriving at out appointment, CARNAX refused of honor the offer. They are a fraud.

Waited over 90 minutes for someone to take 90 seconds to do the paperwork to sell a car to CarMax on a Tuesday evening. The quality and service of Carmax is the worst I have ever seen.

Prices jacked up for their certification but they shove the warantee down your throat and those prices. you can go new cheaper if you're flexible on features. I worked with them on a couple possibilities and walked away.

I have tried to reserve cars on CarMax's website, sharing my phone number and e-mail when I do so. CarMax has never once contacted me about the car I wanted to buy. I won't be trying again.

Went looking for a car and no one seemed knowledgeable about the inventory or how to find out when a vehicle listed would be available. They have cars listed but aren’t available. New employees need mentors to help them gain customers.

I recently used CarMax searching for a particular vehicle, make, model, color, trim, package, cost, miles, location. I wanted a specific car. As with other online car search platforms, you get a lot of vehicles that you are not interested in and don't meet your requirements. It seems you are limited to just their vehicles.

The salesman broke his promise to me about the way interest would be charged and the car ended up costing me double what it was worth. I will NEVER buy from there again!

CarMax is very easily the highest priced car finding site. While they advertise some desirable cars, their prices are completely ludicrous!

The price assessment provided by CarMax for used cars was lower than other dealerships, in my experience. The waiting time was also extremely long. Will not choose CarMax.
