CarGurus is an automotive marketplace for car shoppers use to find and compare new or used cars using proprietary technology and innovative data within its search algorithms, whether it's for a car guru with a plan to purchase a dream car or someone looking for great deals on a mediocre used car for college. With more than three million used car listings and over 450,000 listings for new cars, CarGurus provides a wide variety of options for car shoppers.

The automotive research and shopping website was launched in 2006 by Langley Steinert, former co-founder of TripAdvisor, the world's largest online travel site. Today, Car Gurus claims to get more average daily traffic than major competitors AutoTrader™, Cars.com™, KBB.com™ and Edmunds.com™.

The board of directors still includes the founder, Langley Steinert, along with Steve Conine, co-founder and co-chairman of Wayfair. The company recently became a stock option on the Nasdaq under the symbol CARG.

CarGurus.com prides itself on providing unbiased price transparency data to help consumers make smarter and more empowered purchase decisions when shopping for vehicles online.

For every listing, CarGurus shows vehicle data including the time on market, price history, a full local-market price analysis, pertinent information regarding pre-owned vehicles, customer reviews, and car dealers' expert reviews. Also, millions of new, used, and certified pre-owned cars are analyzed by the search engine on the website to rank the best cars available on price savings. If you are looking to find local deals, it'll match you with the best car prices in your area.

Over 15 million visitors per month shop for vehicles online at CarGurus.com.

Compare Prices and Features

CarGurus.com uses mathematical search algorithms to analyze and compare car prices and features on cars for sale. It claims to provide the utmost transparency during the buying and selling process by providing the data and information consumers need to make smart, empowered car purchasing decisions.

To use the auto finder, potential buyers simply type in a zip code and the desired car make and model, and CarGurus shows which vehicle listings to go for and which to avoid for the best local deals.

Whether you are looking for pre-owned vehicles, all-wheel drive, fuel economy, motor trend reviews, or other specs, CarGurus can find the perfect vehicle to fit your needs.

Search Filters

CarGurus' technology search allows users to search by:

  • Price
  • Mileage
  • Body style
  • Dealer or seller radius to a particular zip code
  • Transmission type
  • Trim
  • Days on the market
  • Recent listings
  • Drivetrain type
  • Color
  • Fuel type
  • Engine type
  • Vehicle history
  • Additional options (such as self-driving car, backup camera, utility package, etc.)
  • Sold by a car dealership or individual
  • Photos
  • Fuel economy
  • Price drops.

You can also add similar cars to your search or type in very specific text to help narrow your options.

Question and Answer Board

CarGurus' most unique feature is its question and answer board. This is an online community forum where car buyers can post questions on any auto-related topic. You have to sign in to the website to set up a profile to post a question, but the board is free and open to all visitors.

This is a helpful tool, beyond the search engine features, to help individuals find the latest updates on all things auto-related. The categories include:

  • Shopping and Pricing
  • Maintenance and Repair
  • Car Customization
  • General

This forum provides a prime opportunity to ask questions you would not otherwise be able to ask on the Contact Page of the website because you can receive help beyond car shopping customer service, which you can't always plan on to respond immediately. Users themselves can be resources for one another beyond consumer reviews and share practical, real-world advice without any marketing bias.

Plus, CarGurus staff, who are presumably car guru experts themselves, reply to questions on the forum as well. This feature seems more efficient for both customer and company because chances are your question is not uncommon and being answered publicly can help others as well. It also allows you to keep track of question topics that interest you by "favoriting" them.

Sell Your Car on CarGurus

Something else that resonates with CarGurus users is that the website allows you to sell your car through its site at no cost. Similar to Craigslist, you can post an ad on the platform to be seen by others. This makes the pool to shop from much larger than some other companies with specific seller requirements.

nother difference is that to upload your ad you have to complete a form with the following specifications:

  • Transmission Type
  • Exterior Color
  • Interior Color
  • Car Description
  • Car Photo

This method can definitely be a safer way to sell your car because you know exactly what specs to include instead of just guessing. And posting with a popular site like CarGurus.com gives you some semblance of legitimacy.

Vehicle Pricing Tools

The Cargurus IMV or Instant Market Value is a tool for pricing your car. It is a combination of a recommendation tool and a comparison tool. You can go to the "Sell My Car" page and specify the car, zip, mileage, transmission and options to see suggestions for the most competitive pricing and to determine the value of your car.

To help you determine if a seller is selling the car at a fair price, CarGurus also offers a trade-in value tool that analyzes over 4 million used car listings per day to deliver an accurate estimate of your cars Trade-in and private-sale value. In most cases, CarGurus innovative data analysis is superior to using your own metrics.

Mobile Apps

One final note: This is one of the few websites in its industry that makes its app easy to find and download for iPhone and other Apple products as well as Android. The CarGurus.com app has received solid performance ratings.

The Bad

  • Anyone Can Post a Listing

 Anyone Can Post a Listing

Being able to post your car for free on CarGurus.com is definitely advantageous for the seller; however, buyers should be aware that it may not be as advantageous for them. According to the website, if someone has a car he or she wants to sell, he or she can just post it on the CarGurus site and from there it will be included in the millions of used car listings it provides. All the seller has to do is have the car's color, transmission type and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and photo. Vehicle history information helps, but could in some cases be fabricated.

There doesn't seem to be a system in place to ensure that sellers are legitimate. This may be cause for concern if considering a test drive. When searching the used car listings, individuals should consider whether the car is being sold by an individual seller or a dealership or whether it is certified pre-owned or not.

Car dealerships are likely the safer bet, as they have a vetting process of their own and many car dealerships have already established an affiliate relationship with CarGurus. Through the "Find a Dealer" page, shoppers can find car dealers in their area with the best reputation.

The Bottom Line

CarGurus has millions of new and certified pre-owned cars to choose from, both from dealerships and individual sellers, and is competitive in the automotive marketplace industry. The company boasts many helpful technology search tools and extensive vehicle data, and users can find some great deals.

What really makes the site worthwhile is the community forum, where you can ask questions on anything car-related or find answers on already posted topics. Finally, CarGurus offers more structure and specifications than a platform like Craigslist.

However, buyers should be aware that there is no vetting process for direct sellers. Some recent CarGurus reviews warn of fraudulent activities from car dealership sellers as well.

If you want to buy a proper decent car that's over 7 or 8 years old, please please do not take cargurus car valuations seriously, only take them as a joke, specially if the car is low mileage, they have no idea how to value proper low mileage decent cars with full history, the valuation does not take into account whether or not the car has ten owner's or one, it does not take into account whether it has a full main dealership history or no history at all, nor does it take into account whether or not the car has been seriously accident damaged, nor does it take into account the overall condition, lets face it, a car that's advertised on cargurus may need a total respray, but it's not taken into account, so therefor how can they possibly advise the general public with their nonsense valuations, quite often their valuations on top condition Mercedes and BMW'S are as much as £4.000 - £5.000 away from the true valuation. I feel sorry for the naive shoppers who take advise from this company who claims its transparent, don't make me laugh, I am a expert in car valuations and have been in the same job for over 30 years, so i know what i'm talking about. Uploading photos, typing in comments, picking the year, etc., is easy Being able to pick options and things that make the car unique is very hard- most of all THEY are going to assign the price and if you don't like the price they assign, they give you a lower ranking like a "fair deal" or or lower. If you go along with their price assignment, but you don't buy extra enhancements from them, after two or three days they lower your rating to a "fair deal" or lower when absolutely nothing has changed with the car. For example, when I questioned them about why after the third day the car was listed they arbitrarily changed the value rating from good deal to fair deal, they closed the listing and marked it as sold! It's not like the service is free - if you sell the car you pay them, which is fair. But all the other bull crap is not Don't waste your time using CarGurus! I wish I had screenshots of my listing, you could see nothing changed but THEIR rating changed...I just don't think they are trustworthy

Over the past few years, we have used CarGurus.com to look at and find (once) cars to buy. When we wanted to list our good condition car, the process to list on CarGurus.com was pretty easy. However, the site would get 100$ if we sold our car through them. A price we were willing to pay. Once listed, CarGurus.com evaluated our asking price as a bad deal. We saw very comparably price cars of the same make that were priced similarly to our car and listed as fair deals. One car in particular was a base model version of our LTD model (both hybrids), the car had the same mileage and was listed for 5$ less and was deemed a fair deal. We don't understand how CarGurus.com can even use such language for their private sellers. We ended up removing our listing from CarGurus.com after 2 days, we listed our car on Craigslist.com and we received 2 inquiries within 12 hours from serious buyers. Do not support this bullying platform, it is a waste of time if you are selling privately.

We bought a car from Dallas Leasing Returns, Dallas, TX after making contact thru GURUS. We are now filing a complaint with Tx. The salesman told us the car was free of liens, and that the car was owned by the leasing company and that it had been a lease vehicle. They showed us a vehicle report that showed it was owned by a leasing company. They were slow getting us the title and gave us the run a round on why it wasn't being delivered timely. Our investigation with DMV confirmation revealed the car had a loan and wasnt' paid off until 33 days after we paid for the car, and the title was then made into the name of the leasing company from a private owner. This car dealership is not truthful. I have ask for my money back and I will return the car.

CarGurus has some good things that their competitors don't have like secure buying.Their website, however is an absolute trainwreck-consistently tells you cars are not available that really are. Several of the features haven't worked for at least a year and a half. I've reported these issues twice and both times CarGurus flat-out ignored me. They didn't even respond.

Every dealer I have gone to tells me there is some hidden fee on top of the price listed. So the price I saw was for the car but then there is some mandatory extra down-payment or some mandatory service contract. One dealer told me there is iTrax installed already and that price is not included so the $7,000 is without the added $1500 iTrax cost. In the end, expect at least $1,000 or more on top of the cost, in my experience, BEFORE adding taxes, plates, registration, etc. CarGurus, this should be noted on your site to expect possible additional fees on arrival to the dealership. The dealership did not have the used car they advertised. Instead it was all about selling me a new one. It was just a ploy to get me into their facicilty. And they advertised a no hassle one price. That wasn’t true either. The back and forth with the salesman and the sales manager was ridiculous. All the stereotypes you hate about buying a car happened here. Don’t trust CarGurus.

Would not allow posting a review of a bad experience. A Fl. dealer had an automobile had 2 collisions , electrical re-wiring with other engine issues and would not let a review be posted as the seller had previous issues selling wrecked auction cars. CG would take no more reviews for this seller. CG value guide are a bit skewed. Keep in mind CarGurus makes money from the seller side & need to maintain that relationship, not specifically with the buyer. Some experiences are good, but be diligent.

Compare this with other automotive sales search engines and it falls short over and over. I can't tell you how many simple extended filters I have put in and it returns 'no vehicles' -- Then I use the same criteria on another one such as Carfax.com and it returns many vehicles. It's really a clunky version and you can't even have a print version of the car you find.

It is a good site to find a car, however while looking I found a car I was interested and one of the important things about it was that it said there had been no accidents. I eventually ended up buying the car and when I went and had it serviced I was informed that it had been in an accident and as a result the wheels would never be 100% aligned. Having no accidents was one of the main reasons I bought the car and to find out that it did in fact have an accident really annoys me.

There is a real problem searching for new cars in hot models. The cars listed often have not arrived at the dealership, and just as often are already sold. In addition, prices are often not honored by the dealer. The lowball price seems designed just to get us to give them our phone numbers.

Experience thus far tells me many of the dealer listing are nothing more than click bait. For me, roughly 75% of my requests come back as not available, or “can’t find the vehicle you are inquiring about.” There is no apparent way to alert CarGurus, and sometimes *weeks*later, the bogus listings are still there.

Ok site, but don’t expect them to stand behind you after a supposed sale. The seller & I agreed to a deal, officially thru the site, then he sold it to another person after we agreed. You think Carguru’s would help or take some action? Nope, “that happens” was their response.

They continually put up false trim levels on cars and that causes people to believe the 'great price' moniker but it's false advertising at best and deceptive business at worst. If you use them, copy the vin, put it in Google and make sure you're getting the car you think you are. Don't waste your time.
