Subaru is a Japanese auto company founded in 1953. The Subaru lineup includes hatchbacks, sedans, crossover SUVs, and SUVs. Subaru's headquarters are located in Camden, New Jersey. The company centers its mission on a "Love Promise" focused on corporate responsibility and community involvement. Customers and employees enjoy the benefits of Subaru's dedication to engineering reliable vehicles and contributing to the greater good.

Notably, all Subaru vehicles use a horizontally opposed engine design and symmetrical all wheel drive to lower the center of gravity and help with traction in all types of weather conditions. All Subaru SUVs have a ground clearance of at least 8.7 inches. This high ground clearance gives you options to explore new terrains and seize spontaneous adventures.

Subaru cars continue to gain popularity in the global market. Subaru’s most popular model in the United States is the Subaru Outback. On a global scale, the Forester SUV is the top seller with the base model starting at $24,495. The top trim level for the Subaru Forester starts at $34,595. The Subaru Impreza is the cheapest model starting at $20,000. Subarus manufactures a total of eight different car models; these include the following:

  • Outback
  • Forester
  • Impreza
  • Cross trek
  • Legacy
  • Ascent
  • WRX
  • BRZ

The Good

  • Customer Satisfaction
  • Vehicle Warranty Coverage
  • Special Design Features
  • Multimedia Technology
  • High Resale Value
  • Advanced Safety Features

Customer Satisfaction

Subaru ranks high for consumer satisfaction. In the latest American Customer Satisfaction Index Automobile Report, Subaru's score was among the top 4 companies out of 28 tested, in a tie for second place, and the highest ranked mass-market (non-luxury) brand. Subaru car reviews focus on the dependability, longevity, and safety of the vehicles.

Vehicle Warranty Coverage

New Subaru vehicles come with a warranty that covers three years or 36,000 miles. This is a typical warranty length for new cars. After this time, customers can extend their warranty with Subaru's Added Security plan. The extended warranty covers wear and tear, cause and effect, and special items-categories rarely covered in vehicle warranties. You have two options for the extended warranty: the Classic or Gold Plus.

The Classic Warranty

  • Plans options for 8 to 10 years or 100,000 to 120,000 miles
  • Warranty coverage for engine, all-wheel drive, transmission, towing, and car rental
  • Receive repair reimbursements for towing and rentals car

The Gold Plus

  • Option to transfer your coverage
  • Covers all the classic warranty parts and more
  • Additional coverage on air conditioning, electrical, steering, brakes, front suspension, and more
  • Access to genuine Subaru parts for vehicle repair

Special Design Features

Subaru vehicles are powered by a unique horizontally opposed boxer engine that provides even weight distribution and gives a lower center of gravity, allowing owners to drive with tighter control. The unique piston motion helps reduce vibration so cars run smoother.

Combining the unique engine and the special symmetrical all-wheel drive, which helps tires to get traction from as much of the road as possible, makes the Subarus handle easier and better in poor weather conditions.

The Subaru Boxer engine also maintains the highest fuel efficiency among dedicated AWD vehicles.

Multimedia Technology

Subaru creates seamless connections between your car and smartphone. The large multimedia screen makes navigating your in-car entertainment easy and accessible. Connect to the multimedia system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, or Bluetooth. Avoid distracted driving with large app icons and hands-free technology.

Subaru Starlink is a subscription that allows drivers to access additional safety features. Enjoy features including stolen vehicle recovery, remote services, automatic collision notifications, vehicle alerts, 24/7 personal assistance, and more. The Starlink Concierge connects you with a real-time assistant to answer questions, book reservations, or schedule maintenance. Subaru Starlinks is available on select 2020 Subaru vehicles.

High Resale Value

Subaru vehicles surpass many other car brands in resale value. According to Experian’s report, “97% of Subaru vehicles sold in the last 10 years are still on the road today.” Used Subarus are in high demand because they last longer than other vehicles and have low maintenance costs for the first five years.

Advanced Safety Features

Subaru innovates to bring drivers the best safety technology in the car industry. Released in 2013, Subaru Eyesight technology helps drivers anticipate dangerous situations and react in record speeds. Seven Subaru models use a special EyeSight Driver Assist technology, which includes:

  • Adaptive cruise control — Adaptive cruise control adjusts the car speed in response to surrounding traffic speeds. With Subaru Eyesight, your car will predict and analyze the car speed in front of you. If the car slows down in front of you, your car will automatically adjust to match the speed. Rush hour becomes more manageable when you have responsive technology on your side.
  • Pre-collision braking — Eyesight technology predicts dangerous situations faster than human reaction speeds. If you turn a corner to find a stopped car, use pre-collision braking to automatically bring your car to a full stop. This technology uses absolute accuracy to keep you and your loved ones safe.
  • Pre-collision throttle management — As part of the Subaru EyeSight, your Subaru can anticipate abrupt stops and changes by monitoring the car ahead of you. This feature helps to improve reaction time and safety in quick response situations.
  • Lane assist and sway warning — This feature watches the lines to notify you if you are swaying. You will receive a notification if you are drifting out of the lane without signaling. The lane assist will take over and guide you back to the middle of the lane if you do not self-correct. Feel added comfort knowing that your car keeps you safe when you unexpected distractions arise.

Along with the Subaru Eyesight, Subarus also uses a DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System to help drivers build safe driving habits. The system sends alerts if the driver’s eyes have left the road for too long. The drivers receive visual and audible alerts to bring their eyes back to the road. The Subaru car can also activate Eyesight technology to improve reaction time if the car detects distracted driving. These features are exclusive to Subaru models.

Additional safety options include a rear-vision camera (which is standard on all models); blind-spot detection; lane change assist; rear cross-traffic alerts; and active torque vectoring, which helps protect you in unpredictable situations.

The Bad

  • Low Subaru Reliability Rank
  • Lack of Electric and Hybrid Options

Low Subaru Reliability Rank

On the most recent 2020 JD Power Dependability Study, Subaru came in the lower quartile, at #24 out of 33 brands, which means that Subaru may not be the most reliable car brand when it comes to maintenance. However, Subaru ranks well in other areas such as brand loyalty and safety technology. Last year, Subaru received #1 in Brand Loyalty for the automotive industry from JD Power. This is the first time Subaru has outranked Toyota in brand loyalty.

Lack of Electric and Hybrid Options

Subaru is a bit behind the mark when it comes to updated electric model offerings. The brand doesn't have any current electric vehicles on the market in the United States. The Crosstrek hybrid was discontinued in the year 2017, but will be coming back as a hybrid in the 2019 model year; however, its release will be limited to California.

It may be 2021 before a fully electric vehicle is offered by Subaru.

The Bottom Line

Subaru has a cult-like following due to its unique internal design features, which create a safe, smooth, and more responsive driving experience. With this brand, customers can expect to be satisfied with their purchase and happy with advanced safety features.

If you are interested in purchasing a Subaru car, start by reading Subaru reviews from customers. Learn what model works best for your lifestyle. Research the various models and test drive them at a nearby Subaru dealership. Whichever Subaru model you choose, it’s sure to be a reliable companion on your next adventure.

great travelling car, we have been up and down I 95 for 4 years now and totally trust a well maintained and prepared outback for a road trip- we are planning to do I 10 for a few months and hope that the Subaru will be as reliable and comfortable as it was on the east coast. out west, how will heat and humidity or lack of affect the drive? We plan to replace our SUV soon and are torn between Subaru and another VERY reliable car brand. just have to do a little more investigation and see what is affordable.

I have owned 2 Subaru's. I am in my 60's and have owned numerous vehicles over my driving life of 48 years. Finding the Subaru brand was the best thing ever. I virtually spend almost no money maintaining this vehicle and it is safe you feel it when you drive it. The first one I purchased was a basic model and than when I bought my second I up graded with the eyesight. Very happy and I will not leave this brand.

We have owned three Subaru Foresters and are presently leasing a fourth. It’s comfortable, roomy, and gas mileage is excellent. We’re particularly pleased with how well the Subaru handles snow and icy conditions and are fans of the large back up camera and side warning safety features.

The sales manger, Bill H and salesman, Alan W, are both amazing eoe who know customer service. If you are ever at Riverside Subaru in New Bern NC, you will have the same experience!

Weve never owned a Subaru before. We bought a Subaru because of the brands name for safety and car reliability and based off some friends recommendation for a good family car. While no mechanical problems have arisen, we have had a couple electrical issues we uave come across in the short 8 month time span we have had our brand new 2018 subaru outback. One of the issues caused us to have to drive around for a month without the use of any features (back up camera, maps, music etc.). The company was having issues importing the parts to fix the issue and after some digging around Subaru offered us a 400$ goods coupon expiring in 1 yr. The issue was never addressed as a recall and never spoken about publicly by Subaru, to my knowledge, even though numerous other cars had the same probelm (according to the dealership and several others that i called anout the problem). This leads me to believe that they may not have actually reaolved the problem and put faulty parts back in my car for a temporary fix. Of course i will not know this to be true until my warranty expires and the part breaks once again. We were never given any explanation as to why this happened and any reassurance that this would not happen again. This surely made my trust in Subaru falter some and I dont necessarily see this vehicle as being as reliable as the older outbacks you see others driving around in still. I will most likely bot purchase a Subaru again and do better research on the quality of parts being put into my vehicle next time we purchase.

I have owned two subarus and loved both of them. I have owned my forester for eleven yrs and it has never left me on the side of the road. As far as improvement, I guess they can offer more amenities for less money. Honestly, I have not complaints or problems with my vehicle or the company.

The all-wheel drive ride is excellent, window frames are positioned for maximum visibility, car is reliable, really well-built, huge trunk on the Outback, retains its value, and doesn't break the bank. If you want to feel safe in icy conditions, this is the car

We own three Subarus. I love the all-wheel drive and the extra safety and confidence it gives us when driving in snowy conditions. The service department at the dealership has excellent customer service. They have a great line-up of models including the Outback and Forrester with higher clearance and the more sporty Legacy. My next car will probably be a Subaru as well.

Subarus drive like a tank. Very solid vehicle. There is a reason why you see so many in places like Utah and Idaho. I had an Outback for a while. It looks like a smaller SUV, but you would be surprised at how much space is in them. It sits at a nice height off of the ground and is so much longer than it looks. And it is just a durable car. You don't have to worry about taking it off-road.

I've been a Subaru owner for about 5 years now. And I will likely buy another Subaru again in the future. The AWD is almost an essential in the winter where I live. It definitely beats sliding around in semi-controlled drifts on top of the snow like I often had to in my previous vehicle, a Ford Mustang. The gas mileage is great, especially for an AWD. And sure, it doesn't have as much guts as my Mustang did, but that also has meant fewer speeding tickets.

Our 1996 Subaru Legacy Outback was our family car from the time before we had children to the time our three children finished their second year in college! "Little Red" turned 200,000 miles with many memories driving us safely along the paths of life. Sturdy, safe, reliable, and retired with her engine in tact (new struts, new clutch, new tires (of course), and various TLC maintenance visits)! This car was our "trusty steed"...Subaru does it right!

This is my first Subaru car I have owned. I bought the Tribecca model about ten years ago. I have heated seats, power windows and seats, three rows for a large group, large trunk space, good gas mileage, and never have I had a major problem with this car. I have been so pleasantly surprised with the quality of the vehicle. Now I am wondering which Subaru car I will purchase next.

Ok, so my current car is a 2013 Subaru Outback Premium 2.5L Engine, and IT IS AWESOME!! Like, for real! I can fold the seats down to make more room, it carries literally all my earthly possessions (haha... not that I have a lot), is very safe with the AWD. I seriously love my Subaru. The only con I can think of is that it burns oil pretty quick, but that's negligible to the myriad of awesomeness.

My wife loved mine so much we got her one! I have a Crosstrek and she has an Ascent. You cannot get a better car for the money and the dealership and company are so amazingly easy to work with.

Have owned a Subaru outback ultimately had to sell the car because the second row seating just was not big enough for my family however great gas mileage terrific car in the snow and wet streets very reliable. One drawback is when 1 tire needs to be replaced you must replace all four tires, which is expensive. Would recommend this car as a great small SUV

Great experience. Their cars are so safe!! Wish they were more roomy inside. There isnt a lot of space between the back seats and the front seats in at least the 5 different models weve been in. It's a tight squeeze with car seats in back and an adult in front.

We have owned a few Subaru cars and have loved them both. The only complaint we have had is the maintenance that must occur at 100,000 miles, but as long as that maintenance is taken care of, these cars seem to last really well! Overall, I would consider purchasing another Subaru car in the future and would recommend them to a friend as well!

When I was looking to buy a new car, a few people had mentioned the Subaru Outback. From the outside, it looked a little small (I wanted a car with a big trunk), but don't let it fool you. I have been able to move beds and couches with it. I have loved driving it. It seems like a very reliable car, and I now understand the hype around it

Subaru is a great company that makes pretty good cars. They last a long time and they get excellent gas mileage. I don't know much about the safety aspects of their cars but the Impreza that I drive seems pretty safe. The downside is that the car burns oil. It s a 2013 so hopefully they have fixed the problem by now but as you drive, somehow, because the way the car was built, oil is burned off which causes the oil level to drop and soon the oil light comes on and if you aren't prepared you are in trouble so I drive around with a quart of oil in my car just in case. It isn't a fluke either in just my car because it is written in the car's owner's manual as well. Wish I would have known this before but it is still a decent car and seems like it will last for a long time.

I just bought a 2017 used Subaru Crosstrek. It has been the perfect car for me so far! I just don’t like the the touchscreen up front doesn’t update when the song changes that’s playing from my phone. It shows the first song played in the car when it’s first turned on and then doesn’t change after that. Also, there needs to be more variety for windshield wiper speeds. You can make them go really slow or really fast, but there seems to be no in between speed. But overall it’s been an amazing car!

I enjoy most Subaru vehicles. They are very practical and their all wheel drive lineup is great in the snow. What I like least is the recall on many 2018 vehicles where the gas gauge would report incorrectly, and drivers would run out of gas unexpectedly as a result. This put myself and at least one other Subaru owner I know in a dangerous situation.
