We own our first Kia right now and I love it. The next couple of cars we own, I would like to be Kias. I love the screen and android auto/car play feature and all the features on the steering wheel. It's a fun little car to own and has been great for the couple of years we've had it. I'm looking forward to getting a new one in the next year or two.

I’ve only had bad experiences with Kia. We had a car that had unknown electrical issues that became dangerous to drive and nobody knew exactly why. Probably will never get a Kia again.

I bought my Hyundai from my grandparents who bought it back in 2010. I’ve had it for about 4 years and have only had a problem with the gas cap leaking which was a quick and inexpensive fix. I have been very impressed with how long this car has lasted!

Hyundai has many unreasonable prices for useless vehicles. A manager tried to sell a car to my family with such useless reasoning, and is talked all nonsense. When being a manager, try to manage better in the future.
The Final Word
Vehicle Lineup (Winner: Kia)
The Korean car brands offer a wide variety of vehicle options. In the 2021 lineup, Kia offers 15 vehicle models with additional electric and hybrid options. Kia is known for its sporty and sleek vehicle lineup. The Kia lineup consists of SUVs, vans, sedans, hybrids, a hatchback, and electric vehicles.
Hyundai offers 11 base models along with hybrid and electric upgrades. Hyundai’s vehicle design tends to be more conservative and clean compared to Kia. Hyundai offers several SUVs, sedans, hatchbacks, hybrids, and electric vehicles.
Neither automaker currently produces pickup trucks. However, Hyundai recently announced that the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz pickup truck will be manufactured later this year.
Since Kia competes has a wider selection than Hyundai, Kia wins the vehicle lineup category.
Vehicle MSRP (Winner: Hyundai)
Whether you choose Kia or Hyundai, you can select from several affordable models that fit your budget and family size. Both car brands offer some of the most affordable options while still maintaining overall quality. Vehicle MSRPs are comparable to other inexpensive brands including Toyota and Honda.
The most inexpensive Hyundai model is the 2021 Hyundai Accent that starts at $15,395 MSRP. For a top-of-the-line, SUV model, you can expect to pay close to $50,000 for the Hyundai Palisade. The Palisade SUV is Hyundai’s most expensive model.
Kia’s most affordable option is the Kia Rio sedan starting at $17,045 MSRP. Kia’s lineup includes more expensive options such as the luxury Kia K900 model starting at $59,900 MSRP.
According to our new vehicle MSRP estimates, Hyundai has a more affordable lineup.
Luxury Options (Winner: Hyundai)
Hyundai has its own luxury vehicle division called Genesis. According to the Genesis website, J.D. Power ranked Genesis as the #1 Luxury Brand in Initial Quality in 2020. Genesis is also the only car brand to earn the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award for all its sedans. The car company offers four luxury vehicle models to choose from.
Kia does not offer a separate luxury vehicle brand. Instead, the automaker offers a few luxury vehicle options within its current lineup. For example, Kia offers two luxury sedan options including the Kia Cadenza and the Kia K900. Kia is relatively new to the luxury car market and may continue to make luxury models in the future.
If you are seeking a luxury vehicle, Hyundai has more options available through its luxury division.
Vehicle Warranty (Winner: Tie)
Kia and Hyundai have an identical vehicle warranty. Both automakers offer one of the most competitive car warranties in the industry. New Kia and Hyundai vehicles have a 5-year or 60,000 miles factory warranty and a 10-year or 100,000 powertrain warranty. New cars also come with emergency roadside assistance.
The Kia and Hyundai warranty options are almost identical in length and coverage.
Reliability (Winner: Kia)
When initially introduced in the United States, Kia and Hyundai models experienced a lot of maintenance issues. Kia and Hyundai have worked to improve their brand reputation by creating reliable vehicles.
According to Repair Pal, Kia has a reliability rating of 4.0 out of 5.0. This puts Kia in third place out of 32 car brands. These scores are based on customer data detailing annual repair costs, the number of unexpected repairs, and the severity of repair needed. Based on an average annual repair cost, the Kia Rio and Kia Soul are the most inexpensive Kia’s to maintain. Almost all of the Kia models are below the industry average for repair costs.
Repair Pal also gives Hyundai a 4.0 out of 5.0 rating. However, Hyundai ranks just below Kia in fourth place compared to 32 car brands. The Hyundai Elantra and Hyundai Tucson are the most affordable Hyundais to maintain. Coupled with the Hyundai warranty, drivers can feel added confidence that their Hyundai model will continue to function with minimal issues.
Based on Repair Pal’s reliability ratings, Kia has a slight advantage in offering reliable and affordable vehicles.
Customer Satisfaction (Winner: Hyundai)
Hyundai ranks above Kia on BestCompany.com. Hyundai currently ranks in eighth place while Kia ranks in tenth place. The two brands are close competitors with only a few points difference in the overall score.
According to BestCompany.com customer ratings, Hyundai outperforms Kia in customer satisfaction.
Fuel Economy (Winner: Hyundai)
Kia and Hyundai offer hybrid and electric vehicles with impressive fuel economy. The best way to determine which car brand has the best fuel economy is to look at each brand’s most fuel-efficient vehicles and their corresponding EPA estimates.
The Kia models with the best MPG include the 2021 Niro Hybrid with a combined city/highway average of 50 mpg. The 2021 Niro Plug-In Hybrid gets a combined city/highway average of 105 mpge. Mpge stands for miles per gallon gasoline equivalent. These models are ideal for individuals wanting to save on gas and reduce carbon emissions.
In comparison, the 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid gets a combined city/highway average of 52 mpg. The Hyundai Ioniq was named one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles of 2021. The Hyundai Ioniq gets a combined city/highway average of 59 mpg. The Hyundai Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid gets the best fuel economy with a combined city/highway average of 119 mpge.
Compared to Kia, Hyundai has superior fuel efficiency on its top competing vehicles.
Car Dealerships (Winner: Kia)
Dealership frequency needs to be considered for purchasing and maintenance convenience. Kia is headquartered in Irvine, California, and has around 750 dealerships across the United States. Hyundai has close to 600 dealerships nationwide. Since both car brands offer a long warranty, drivers need to live close to the respective dealership to maintain the warranty. If you decide to move during the warranty period, you may want to consider the dealership location.
Kia is a better choice when looking at dealership quantity and proximity.
Kia vs Hyundai: Which is best?
Kia and Hyundai have experienced significant growth within the last 10 years. Both automakers innovate to produce reliable vehicles that customers love. When comparing the two car brands, Hyundai outperforms Kia in areas of affordability, luxury, customer satisfaction, and fuel economy.
If you are searching for a new car, determine your desired size and features. Once you have a few models in mind, head down to a Hyundai or Kia dealership to test drive available models.
