Southwest Airlines is a large US airline headquartered in Dallas, Texas. In fact, it is the world’s largest low-cost carrier. The airline was established in 1967 and adopted the name "Southwest" in 1971. It offers over 4,000 flights a day with 90+ destinations in the US and ten additional countries.

Southwest is one of the largest Boeing operators. In fact, it only operates 737s. Southwest has over 550 737s in service, with each of them getting around six to seven flights per day.

Southwest is not without controversy. Recently, the company got into trouble with the government for offering a quoted rate on its website that was not actually a real fare for any seat on a flight. Also, in July 2014, a customer and his family were asked to leave a flight because he was not allowed to board a flight early as an A-list member. He tweeted his dissatisfaction and was kicked off the flight and told to remove his tweet.

The Good

  • Low Cost
  • Two Bags Checked Free
  • On-Time Flights
  • Amenities and Entertainment

Low Cost

Southwest is a low-cost airline. Ticket prices are some of the lowest on the market. On top of its low prices, Southwest offers many discounts and promotions on their website. The rewards program is also beneficial and easy to use. It is clear to see how to earn a free flight through Southwest. These different promotions and specials available can help ensure that Southwest is the lowest price available for many domestic flights.

Two Bags Checked Free

Southwest has a generous checked baggage allowance—two free checked bags per passenger.

Many other airlines charge for more than one checked bag and some airlines don't allow any free checked baggage at all. This makes Southwest one of the top airlines for checked baggage.

Any checked bags (after the two free) cost $75 per bag.

There are size restrictions for baggage on Southwest Airlines. Bags need to be less than 50lbs and have dimensions (length + weight + height) of 62 inches.

Overweight items (51lbs to 100lbs) and oversized items (63 inches to 80 inches) will also be accepted at a fee of $75 per item.

On-Time Flights

Southwest Airlines has a very high on-time percentage for most of their flights: roughly 85% on-time, 6% late, 2% very late, and 4% excessively late (information according to Flightstats.com). This is higher than a number of other top airlines. However, some of the most-active routes received low ratings. Top flights include:

  • Burbank to Oakland (3.2 stars, 87% on time)
  • Phoenix to San Diego (3.2 stars, 85% on time)
  • Los Angeles to San Jose (3.2 stars 83% on time)

This shows that even top flights are barely receiving three stars. Southwest's lowest-ranked flight is Dallas to Austin, receiving only 1.5 stars and being on-time roughly 70% of the time. Many other top airlines have a large number their most active flights in the four-star range. Compared to this, Southwest does not compare as well as some other top airlines.

Amenities and Entertainment

Southwest offers many of the standard amenities when it comes to in-flight services. As a low-cost airline, some in-flight services are lacking when compared to those that other top airlines provide. Check out some of the airline's in-flight amenities:

  • Entertainment: Southwest allows passengers to use personal devices for their entertainment and provides free live and on-demand television. This includes 19 live channels and up to 75 TV episodes from popular series. There are also more than 25 current movie choices available for purchase on flights. Southwest does not have other means for entertainment besides passengers personal devices. Most other airlines have some sort of screen provided and many more options for media.
  • Food and dining: While a number of the major airlines offer meal options on their flights, this low-cost airline does not. However, complimentary drinks and snacks including pretzels and peanuts are available. Many other low-cost airlines do not offer any complimentary items like this.
  • Wi-Fi: For $8 a day, passengers can access wi-fi services on personal mobile devices to browse the web, check emails, and explore social media sites. This is also how the in-flight entertainment is streamed. This is a very affordable option that not every airline provides. However, not every flight with Southwest offers wi-fi. Passengers can check amenities with flight information on the Southwest website to check if their flight will have wi-fi or not. Flights without wi-fi service do not have other options for entertainment.

The Bad

  • Boarding Process
  • Open Seating Policy
  • Ten Minute Rule
  • Limited Destinations
  • Government Action
  • Limited Aircraft Comforts

Boarding Process

The boarding process on Southwest is slightly different than most other airlines. Instead of having passengers choose a seat with some type of interactive map during purchase or check-in, Southwest does not assign any seats. It gives a group (A, B, or C) and a number (1-60) to assign the order of boarding.

Open Seating Policy

Southwest uses an open seating policy so passengers can sit anywhere that is open once they have boarded the plane. This would make the boarding process less smooth than airlines that assign or let passengers choose seats beforehand.

With an open seating policy, passengers may be confused as to where to go and may run into more problems or potentially take longer to be settled on the plane.

Ten Minute Rule

Passengers are suggested to be ready to board the plane 30 minutes before departure time and must have their boarding pass and be at the gate at least 10 minutes before departure time. If they have not arrived at least 10 minutes before, Southwest will cancel the reserved space and the passenger will not be eligible for the denied boarding compensation.

Limited Destinations

Southwest flies to 90+ different destinations (mainly domestic), although international routes are available to the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America. This is a small number of destinations when compared to other airlines, such as United which flies to 300 different destinations and many more internationally.

Keep in mind that the 90+ served destinations cover most of the United States. For passengers that need to travel domestically, Southwest would most likely be able to serve in their desired destinations.

For passengers who want an airline that is able to take them to both international and domestic destinations, Southwest would most likely not be able to serve them the best. Looking at just the number of destinations, Southwest would be considered a small airline.

Government Action

There is an alert for this company because of a government action which was recently placed against them in 2014. At that time, Southwest advertised $59 flights to certain destinations. However, after an investigation, it was shown that there were no seats available to any destination at that price.

The airline was fined for their deceptive advertising. This false advertising is a red flag for how Southwest has in the past conducted business.

Limited Aircraft Comforts

We also felt like the Boeing-driven fleet reduced some of the comfort creature features for customers. Generally, Airbus planes include bigger and better seats, with more seat pitch and width.

gavel

The Bottom Line

We recommend Southwest wholeheartedly. It is difficult to beat its prices. The Rewards points system is also great. Points don't ever expire, but you have to accrue points or keep your card active for 24 months. There are no blackout dates for your frequent flier points.

This airlines offers free checked bags. However they don't assign seats. You can pay extra for the early bird seating which guarantees you seating within the first 60 seats. However this doesn't work if your connecting flight is late, then they herd you on the plane like cattle and you and your traveling party will be separated and you will sit with strangers. They ruined our returned flight on our Honeymoon. Looking back I should have not even boarded the plane and made them put us on another flight as it was not our fault our connecting flight came in late. The flight crew does not care about listening to your concerns. Very insensitive people. Would not use them agaib.

We choose Southwest because they had direct flights from Baltimore to San Diego International. We Drove 4 HOURS to get this flight on April 26th ( we booked it Dec 27 2018) We booked a hotel at the airport who let us check in early... After we put the hotel on a credit card, our flight was cancelled an hour later.. Our confirmation number was OBDF4P. We literally had to book a another flight which had 3 stops. I could have done that from our Airport in Wilkes Barre which is 20 30min from my house...Sorry Southwest, An Airline of your reputation could have done better.... We lost the money for the hotel...

Hi, I travel usually with a backpack and a carry on. I asked for help from a flight attendant to help me put the carry on in the bin above. She looked at me and said mam you can check it in. I then said forget it. And I had many passengers got up to help me. Unfortunately I'm short. Like really short and I can't really teach the bins. If the carry on was too heavy I understand, but she didn't even ask. She just assumed. I am more concerned with passengers safety. I don't want to have myself alone to do it but I just needed a hand and she seemed reluctant to help. I found this a little disturbing. Thanks for contacting me.

I recently took a flt from boston to Jacksonville, florida. We had a layover in nashville but devirted to Dayton due to weather. When we finally arrived in Nashville later that night all 143 passengers scrambled for the reservation desk to re book. Well after almost 2 hrs in line , because only 2 workers, and being skipped over twice in an effort to help others in back of the line we were told to come back at 4 a.m. to try for stand by spots. It being midnight at this point we sat up all night in the airport to make sure we were there on time {4 am}. Well representative didnt show till almost 5 am so it was another scramble to get a flight as there were many more of us back there with only one representative to rebook us. Horrible customer service!

We have flown Southwest for many years - love the free baggage and the ability to change flights without a change fee. However, our last THREE flights were delayed for HOURS. The first time we got to the airport at 6 a.m. for our 7 a.m. flight. Found out at 6:30 that our flight would be delayed five hours while they flew in a part from Baltimore. The part was for the co-pilot's seat (the co-pilot on the last flight the night before should have reported the problem but didn't). We were all given $100 vouchers for our next flight. Fast forward to June - we use our $100 vouchers toward flights to Ft. Lauderdale (from Hartford). We're almost to our runway when the pilot announces there's a problem and we have to return to the gate. When we get back to the gate he announces that he has been up all night! because he ate "bad sushi", and that he thought he was better, but just had "another incident" and didn't think he should be flying. If he had been "up all night", shouldn't he have called in sick in the first place? Another four hour wait while they sent in another pilot from Baltimore. Also, another $100 voucher for our next flight! Now we're leaving Ft. Lauderdale. We arrive at the airport to discover that our flight has been delayed (three hours? four? - I can't remember). Couldn't they have sent us an e-mail so we could have gone to the movies or gone to dinner instead of sitting around the airport? We were able to scramble and find another flight (with a connection which I try to avoid due to vertigo) and got home within two hours of our original flight. I'm convinced the vouchers are just a scam to get us to book another flight (can't fly too many places for $100!).

We were delayed by three hours before even starting our flight, this made us miss our flight out of Atlanta, GA and Southwest put us up in a Hilton Hotel for the night once we got to Atlanta. We were told that this included complimentary breakfast and were given vouchers for lunch. The Hilton does not have complimentary breakfasts and it is expensive ($9.00 for oatmeal), they also do not have free wifi. We ended up using our lunch vouchers as well as complaining to management who then did cover our $39.00 breakfast. We arrived one day late to our destination and had only two days remaining to spend with our ill mother and this was more than likely our last visit to see her, she is not expected to last much longer. The whole situation was just heartbreaking for us and while the delay was beyond Southwests control it was very stressful for us. Our future flights we will look into other airlines before booking with Southwest.

I had a bad experience with a cancelled flight. Things happen, and I understand that flights get cancelled, but I received ZERO help in finding an alternate route, and had to run around in circles and call customer service quite a few times before I could find someone to help me, and even then, it left me stranded and sleeping in the airport for 18 hours.

My flight from John Wayne to Seattle November 1st with a stop in Sacramento was marred by the woman who had an anxiety attack and required the need for four on board nurses. You couldn't get up to use the facilities or nor did they have any on board services. I felt for that poor woman but an apology or some sort of relief would have been nice instead the crew just stressed everyone else out.

Southwest is a great airline, but not fond of seating at all. My thoughts are that seat the passengers without carry on baggage first, then the others, it would expedite seating much faster. It is very annoying to stand and wait to sit, with people that are trying to get over sized bags into the overhead storage. Also with the current seating, chances of sitting with your spouse is minimal, which your on vacation with and would really like to be with them.

I USED to LOVE flying southwest when I lived on the east coast. They were the best airlines to fly with. I lived on Long Island and used to fly to Florida at least 3-4 times a year. Their prices were Great and their customer service couldn't be beat.I now live in Arizona and they have NO DIRECT FLIGHTS to NY. BUMMER. I would Love to use this airline if only they would make it easier to get to NY from here.

I travel a lot on Southwest Airlines but, they have broken the wheels off my new luggage. Then I have to purchase new luggage and they still destroyed the New one. What do they to do my luggage? This is my only complaint. But it is a big one. I have watched them toss the luggage in the plane and they do not care. plus they did break the handle on my luggage.

We flew from KC to Seattle to begin an Alaskan trip. The flight attendant served everyone and then started to visit with attendants who were flying to a conference. She leaned into the seat, with her rear out in the aisle, didn't move when people wanted to use the restroom and made it so that people bumped my husband trying to get by. This went on for about 45 minutes. She was having a marvelous time laughing and joking with the 2 attendants. She didn't ask people if they needed anything and this was a long trip. I've never witnessed anything like it before and we fly SW a lot!

I fly to New York 2 times a year maybe more from FL. My last trip I drove because it got to expensive it use to be about 250.00 to 300.00 round trip now it is around 600.00 to 800.00 which is ridiculous when they made the seating tighter and closer together and very crowded. Then there are the wheel chair phonies at least 25-30 each flight that get on first the walk off the Miracle flight. I will fly other airlines they are cheaper and roomier. I have been using Southwest for over 20 years.

We had to pay a total of $100 for our luggage. We weren't aware of it and came as a huge surprise. It did not help that they seemed short staffed at the counter resulting in long lines and many disgruntled passengers. During our flight from Miami to New York in June 2018.

Southwest Airlines is alright, it's not my favorite. They're cheap, but that's about the best I can say. I have to fly at least once to twice a year, and I just don't enjoy it very much. I don't like how they pack so many people on. It makes it very uncomfortable to be in such a tight space.

Southwest Airlines has pretty bad customer service. When we were barely late for our flight (Plane was still there, tunnel was still connected) they would not let us on even though they obviously could have. Then they gave us horrible options for another flight the next day! We could not make it work and ended up having to buy another flight from Delta who offered one 30 min. later. Southwest was very unhelpful and not understanding.

The last two flights I have booked with Southwest were cancelled because of weather. I get they can't change the weather but they sure were not helpful when trying to switch or find other flights. One time called the customer service line and waited over an hour to try to rebook a cancelled flight. They should really have a different number for customers with cancelled flights.

I love that they provide cheap fares, but don't like not having an assigned seat. The worst part is lining up before you board. The quality of the seats and cleanliness doesn't compare to other airlines either. For sure not my top choice for an airline.

Southwest Airlines doesn't do assigned seats. Your seat is based on how early you check in. A good system in theory but aggravating in practice. If you are traveling with someone but check in a little late, you will have trouble finding seats together. There are also no seat back computers for movies or games. Fly another airline if you can.

I am not a fan of all of the extra fees or boarding process if you do not pay the extra fee to choose a seat in advance. Just build the price of the seat into the price of the ticket. It feels like there are fees for nearly everything which makes you wonder is the price of the ticket really as competitive??
