JetBlue Airways is one of the leading American low-cost airlines. It is headquartered in Queens, New York, with another corporate office in Cottonwood Heights, Utah.

Founded in August 1998, JetBlue is a relative newcomer in the airline industry. Several original employees had previously been with Southwest. JetBlue has a lot in common with Southwest, being a cost-affordable carrier.

Although a low-cost carrier, it strives to provide quality amenities, including in-flight entertainment, TVs in each seat, and satellite radio.

Over 90 destinations are available in the Americas, with lots of domestic US options, as well as destinations in The Caribbean, Bahamas, Bermuda, Barbados, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Mexico, Peru, and Puerto Rico.

The Good

  • Discounted Fares
  • Wi-Fi and In-flight Entertainment
  • Baggage Protection

Discounted Fares

JetBlue does a really good job of providing discounted fares for customers. JetBlue does more for its customers than some larger carriers.

We really liked that JetBlue was one of the companies in the industry that didn't have a refundable/non-refundable fare option, meaning that if JetBlue cancels a customer flight, the customer doesn't lose their fare. We found that this was an issue with other carriers, such as Virgin America. If your flight gets canceled, JetBlue will let you change your flight without the flight change fee.

Another thing that we really liked about JetBlue is its policy honoring lower fares. If a customer requests the lower fare 14 days after they purchased their ticket, prior to the date of departure, they can receive the lower fare. However, effective June 30 of 2015, there is a fee based on the fare option selected on tickets exchanged 15 days or more after the date originally booked. These fees are:

  • Blue: $70
  • Blue Plus: $60
  • Blue Flex: $0

Wi-Fi and In-flight Entertainment

We also liked that every JetBlue flight has free basic Wi-Fi, as well as a television at every seat. JetBlue's Wi-Fi is more reasonable than the service offered by Gogo, which charges for basic Internet service. JetBlue has a FlyFi program that lets customers get basic Internet for free, but after that, the Internet costs $9/hour for their premium service.

Baggage Protection

JetBlue has a good baggage protective policy. With smaller carriers, such as Virgin America, we found that the baggage limit liability was not quoted in an exact dollar amount. Some carriers even suggested that their customers should purchase travel insurance rather than guarantee protection for a bag.

The Bad

  • Customer Complaints

Customer Complaints

Customer feedback focuses on individual customer service experiences as well as the updated baggage policy, which charges $25 for the first bag, which used to be free.

Some customers reported issues with flights being changed on short notice and some cancellations and delays associated with plane mechanical issues. Some customers reported delays when calling the JetBlue customer service line.

The Bottom Line

We recommend JetBlue. We found that their in-flight Wi-Fi is better than some other carriers, such as Delta. We also liked that the insurance coverage and baggage liability was similar to some of the higher-end airlines in the industry. Additionally, the company's flight cancellation policy is very fair for a budget airline.

I am a long time customer of Jet Blue, so it is unfortunate to write this horrific experience. It began at the JFK terminal. I showed up an hour before my "red-eye" flight and got directly on the security line which was overwhelming, but I figured I have an hour! Forty (40) minutes later I was barely half way through the line! Thankfully someone from TSA walked through the line asking for people for the LAX flight. When he took us (10 other passengers) to the front of the security line, there were only two lanes going and according to the departure screen the gate was closing (20 minutes early)! Panicked we ran to the gate and the Jet Blue attendants were frustrated telling us to hurry up! To which I responded, there are a lot of people in the security line for this flight! Sure enough, we waited the 20 minutes so everyone could board. Finally, we pull away from the gate and are waiting on the tarmac for 30 minutes. Finally the captain comes on to tell us the comm system isn't working and we have to go back to the gate. Another 30 minutes go by, we are now an hour after departure time, and informed they have to find a piece so we can deplane while we wait. During this time, I started writing to their customer service team on twitter, which exacerbated the issue. Being apologetic and being sincere is a whole other thing. They stuck to the script, only to say that my experience did not warrant compensation. My greatest disappointment is that I have been a Jet Blue customer for about 10 years and all I was really looking for was an apology - a phone call, someone who reached out and said your business is important and valued and we apologize for the experience you had. Instead they wrote, "We checked into it and since it was not quite a 3 hour delay the flight didn't qualify for compensation: http://bit.ly/JBBOR . We do understand this was a frustrating this experience and we'd like to look into it further. Will you please DM your confirmation code here:" Again, it is unfortunate that I had to experience the flight and then to be undervalued when I expressed my concern makes the situation that much worse. As a customer, I understand things happen but what Jet Blue missed is that a sincere experience and apology can go a long way to keeping customers for life.

My family and I only travel JetBlue, whether we are traveling to Puerto Rico to visit family or to AZ to visit our son at college. We have always been very happy with the service the airline provides until December 2014, when we were traveling to our only son's college graduation and a series of events, including that the JetBlue app was not working properly, the inefficiency of the customer service employees at the JFK airport, and heavy traffic combined, ended up with us not being able to make our flight on time. We ended up having to sleep in the airport and paying 300$ to take the flight the next day. Ever since that day, my personal opinion of the company changed. I didn't just miss the University's award ceremony, where my son was being recognized for his achievements, I almost miss his graduation completely and lost a good amount of money and believe me, our economic situation is not the best.

Flew from san juan to dominican republic and flight was delayed but only about 1 hour. On our way back, we also were with delay. First anouncement was for a little over an hour, however second delay was for over 3 hours. These delays should be notified in advance since traveling with children and alzheimers patient is very difficult. They do not understand why the waiting period is so long. Still waiting and praying we dont get another delay announcement.

It's very sad we have to pay now for luggage. Not only tickets are getting higher and higher and from all other airlines, JetBlue was my most and best yet. But now has become just like any other airline. This change of prices for luggage and carryon for sure will lower the people traveling with. Before I wouldn't hesitate on buying tickets with JetBlue, now I'll shop around for the best deal. Sorry

I have a terrible experience with this company that everyone said is a great air line. While traveling from Puerto Rico, sick and by myself, the company change the flight as schedule and I have to make my connection in NY Airport. I don't have enough money and they denied to offer me a voucher distress for the hotel. I have to spend the full night with temperature at the airport in NY alone. I never flight again with this company, neither recommend it.

Hopefully JetBlue will receive these comments and act upon them! I have tried to fly nothing but JetBlue since they started business 15 years ago. 90% of my experience has been extremely favorable - the other 10% not-so-much. However, now that they will commence charging for a checked bag AND cut down on their seat legroom - there's not much to differentiate them from other airlines and will make it a difficult choice going forward to stick with them. Shortening the legroom is a HUGE issue for me!

Average. I don't see that great service everyone else brags about. In the beginning they were good but lately every time I fly with them there is an issue. My last flight in May on my departure the curbside checker was almost harassing me into tipping him. Then on the way home my flight was cancelled for no reason and the next flight was 4 hours later. The gate agent was more concerned on the health of her dog than assisting me and my handicap hubby. Not what I call GREAT service.

I Fly jet blue occasionally there prices are comparable to other Airlines but they charge extra for baggage and seat i believe its not right. but once you make a commitment and buy a ticket online what choice do you have when you arrive at the airport and check it only to find additional charges.

Canceled a flight , had to beg for ticket credit. Didn't pay the hotel stay . They said it was canceled do to a weather issue in JFK area when no other airline canceled any flights that time when it was raining for 20 min. In the area ...

Paid upgrade for extra legroom. Jack for audio broken, so no movies for me. Unlimited snacks are a joke, flight attendants more focused on showing oictures to each other than serving passengers. Code share partner Seaborne canceled flight. B6 response poor. Done with JB, below what I expected. DL my air choice.

my first time flying JetBlue our flight was delayed to Florida almost 45mins. No one was updating us and then we see a female flight attendant running. once she arrived then we were ready for take off. they were misleading and wasn't really apologetic for the delay. my daughter found garbage in between the seats and she told the flight attendant and she was just rude about. last time we flew JetBlue.

The last few flights with JetBlue have been on older aircraft with no inflight entertainment. The flights have had unreasonable delays, wit little or no communication with passengers.

Every time I flight out of San Juan, PR international airport, there are major delays and Jet Blue blames it on the fact that it is not a hub for them. The delays are not an hr or 2 delays. It is always over 5 hrs. Last time 2/24/18 the delay was 8 hrs. Needless to say we lost our connection and had to stay overnight in Miami, to get home the following day!

I used only use Jet Blue but now have found better rates and times from different airlines for my travel needs. Only use them for short trips now. Very disappointed the past few years with them

Don't like the new baggage fees. They should not apply to True Blue members. Also, flight attendants on my last flight - PBI to JFK - were rude. A first.

The only word to describe JetBlue is cheap. This company is good for a cheap and short flight. It can get uncomfortable and cramped very quickly. Staff is also overworked.
