Alaska Airlines is the seventh largest major carrier in the United States, in terms of passenger traffic. The company offered its service as Alaska Airlines for the first time in 1944, but the airline has its origins in McGee Airways, a company that was formed in 1932.

Even though Alaska Airlines suggests that they only service the northernmost destination in the United States, the carrier has over 100 destinations in the 48 contiguous states, Canada, Mexico, and four of the Hawaiian Islands. In fact, they have its largest hub at the Seattle-Tacoma Airport.

Alaska Airlines also does well with customer satisfaction. For the seventh year in the row, JD Power and Associates ranked Alaska Airlines as the highest in customer satisfaction in 2014.

While Alaska Airlines maintains independence from the major airline alliances, it does have codeshare agreements with some of the major airlines, including Delta and British Airways.

The Good

  • Incentive Program
  • Internet Service
  • Pricing
  • Food and Beverages
  • Entertainment
  • On-Time Percentage

Incentive Program

First of all, we really liked Club 49, the incentive program for customers who were flying to and from Alaska. Every year, Club 49 members get a certificate for 30% off a one-way flight to or from Alaska. You also get two free checked bags with Alaska Airlines, as well as exclusive deals. We reviewed other major carriers, such as Hawaiian Airlines, and couldn't find a similar rewards program.

Internet Service

We found that the Gogo Internet service with Alaska Airlines was affordable. A similar carrier that we reviewed, Hawaiian Airlines, did not have Wi-Fi in the bulk of its planes as of this time.

Pricing

We found that prices were a little high across the board with a few exceptions. A one-way ticket from Seattle to Las Vegas cost $99. Alaska Air also expedites the baggage claim process. If your luggage is not at the claim within 20 minutes, you can get a $25 voucher to use towards your next ticket.

Food and Beverages

We also felt like Alaska Airlines did a good job of providing affordable food and beverages to its coach customers. Most of the meals that we saw for coach clients were priced from $6 to $7, which is slightly cheaper than some of the other carriers we reviewed.

However, we did find that Hawaiian Airlines offers free meals for flights that are longer than six hours, something that Alaska does not have.

Starbucks Coffee is also available on Alaska Airlines as part of their complimentary beverage service.

Entertainment

We had some questions during our phone-in about the in-flight tablet rental. Initially we weren't sure if movies cost extra, but through our conversation we found out they were included with the rental. We liked how the R-rated movies were edited for the presence of younger customers.

On-Time Percentage

According to Flightstats.com, Alaska Airlines flights are on-time roughly 86% of the time. This is above average when compared to select other top airlines.

The Bad

  • Oversized Customers Clause
  • Rewards Plan
  • Aircraft Comfort

Oversized Customers Clause

We took some offense to the "oversized customers" clause of Alaska Airlines' seating policy. We felt like some overweight or larger customers may be turned off by the tone of language on the part of their website. It also emphasized that Alaska Airlines has the right to re-seat a client or boot them from a flight if they hadn't booked a second seat. Delta made it somewhat easier for customers and even suggested that a first-class seat might be better for a "larger" customer.

We would like to see Alaska Airlines be a little bit more sensitive to the needs of its larger customers and make it easier for them to purchase a second seat while reminding them that they are still valued customers.

Rewards Plan

We did have some concerns with the two-year activity clause on the mileage reward plan. One customer did have a complaint about the inactivity on their account leading to its deactivation.

Aircraft Comfort

We also had some concerns with the lack of wide-body planes. The Boeing 737, while a comfortable plane, lacks the comfort of larger Airbuses and larger Boeing aircraft, such as the 767.

gavel

The Bottom Line

We recommend Alaska Airlines wholeheartedly. We also liked the fact that while its planes didn't have TVs on each seat, they made it possible for customers to access great movies and other options via an affordable tablet.

Another great feature of this company was that it wants customers to get their baggage quickly at the claim, offering a $25 voucher if the bags are not off the plane within 20 minutes.

TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!! We got rebooked with Alaska airlines flight from United airlines because we had an over lay and we were going to miss our next flight with United airlines. So there was a new worker at the front desk of Alaska airlines that checked us in. We get to the gate and the worker wouldn’t let us in the airplane because our tickets are not valid. So she sends us out of the gate area back to the very front check in area and tells us to figure out what’s going on with United airlines when we already checked in with Alaska. Made us miss our flight and now we don’t know if we will make it to the wedding we are part of. And by the way our luggage already flew out 😳. NEVER Do BUSINESS WITH ALASKA AIRLINE AGAIN!!!!

I am currently sitting at the gate, once again, waiting for Alaska to make up some ridiculous excuse as to why our flight is being delayed for an indeterminate amount of time. I have flown Alaska 20+ times in the last year, and without fail, there is a 1-3 hour delay. EVERY SINGLE TIME. I've heard every excuse in the book - plane hasn't landed, plane needs a gas refill, plane isn't at the gate yet, no knowledge of air control traffic. EVERY TIME, I waste HOURS of my life waiting. There is no transparency at all throughout this entire process. I always have to ask security what's going on. As customers, we are given absolutely no explanation as to what's happening, when the delay will be over. I've missed countless important events in my life due to the ridiculous inefficiency caused by Alaska Airlines. Maybe today's delay is minor, and I wouldn't be complaining unless this was a repeated offense. Check my flight history and see how many delays I've experienced in my time with Alaska. This is appalling, downright disrespectful, and an obscene waste of my time as well as the customers around me. I will not be continuing to fly on such a joke of an airlines and I will be informing all of my friends never to use Alaska Airlines again. This is ridiculous.

Even though I’m an Alaska elite member, these past few weeks I experienced the WORST customer service ever. It made me miss Southwest (and that’s saying something). 1) two weeks ago my flight was delayed 3 hours, which Alaska didn’t inform us about until after we arrived at the airport. No worries (I thought) Alaska will compensate me. I had to contact them multiple times and all they have ever offered was a $100 voucher... 2) my flight today is delayed over 1.5 hours. I call (mainly to inquire about my other delayed flight) and ask if there’s any upgrade options. The customer service rep abruptly told me “we don’t compensate anything unless you’re at least 2 hours delayed.” Needless to say, I miss the old Alaska. I miss the old Virgin America. This new company is destined to lose its many loyal elite customers.

Arrived at Anchorage AK airport 2 hours before departure and got in line at special service area because I had an minor traveling alone and that is where I was directed when I picked him up 2 months earlier. After standing in line for 20 minutes a clerk/agent came up and said you can check in at a kiosk, I explained my situation and she directed me to another (longer line) in full service. Waited in line 1 HOUR! reached front of the line and the next available agent just closed up and left. No one relieved her, she just left! I left my minor in line and found the agent/clerk who had moved me to the full service line and told her my minor was going to miss his flight. She moved is to another line. Long story short he missed his flight and we had to rebook for the next one 7 hours later! To top the day off, after putting my minor on the plane,we left the airport to head back to Kenai only to learn that the highway was closed for road construction! Ever bought a hotel in Anchorage in the summer? Stayed in a flea bag for $160! Service at Alaska Airlines was terrible and nobody cared. The clerk actually told he that I had not been at the airport for 2 hours. She didn't care, just seemed determined to make the bad service my fault.

Alaska Airlines: Please rid yourself of your archaic class system dividing the general population from the MVP first class, there is upper, middle and low class scenarios. Entering Logan airport in Boston, there were two lines for passengers to check in and 4 ticket agents to assist. Only one was helping the general population, a line that was growing and there were no passengers in the "MVP" line. Being next in line and seeing a free agent, I went to the podium just to be told "I only do MVP, you need to get back in line" I apologized and got back to the front of the line to wait a bit longer, making a comment that this wouldn't be happening if I was in Alaska, at which time the same agent that sent me back to the line announced "Taking all general passengers now" I asked, You'll see me now, and she said "I said all general" Thank you, considering the line was almost reaching the exit doors. But it doesn't stop there. Then we have the boarding gate where another rope is hung dividing regular from MVP First class and one has to remember which side they must walk down. First class get to board first to sit in the front of the plane, seldom do they make eye contact with all us "regular folk" that parade by them. I have no problem with that, but what I do have a problem with is when the stewardess begins serving them coffee and we the common folk that are in the process of boarding have to wait, really can they not be served until we are all on board? So what do MVP members really get for the extra cash? acknowledgment by all other passengers that they have more money or have flown more than them, get to board first and get off plane first, which really doesn't make much difference other than where they will sit while waiting for all others to board. they get a bigger seat and they have a bathroom that is available with a smaller ratio of users than the other 75% of the plane's passengers must use. As a paying customer I have always found it demeaning when the stewardess reminds us that we do not have a right to use the forward bathroom. Another suggestion: instead of making customers pay 6 dollars for a few slices of apples and cheese and crackers, why don't you just give each customer (especially on the five hour flights)one of those overpriced boxes complimentary. Your little bags of snacks are getting smaller and staler each time I fly. Glad I'm a 49er and get at least two bags when I vacation that I would have to pay more than if I shipped. Glad you offer flights that go all the way to the east coast and Hawaii. Oh and my final comment.. when getting off the plane there were plenty of airline helpers at the door, why is it that I, a gramma burdened with a few bags of my own, was able to offer a man struggling with a stroller, crying child and a car seat.... and carry the car seat into the airport for him and not one of the many "workers" that were present offer? Just saying.... If you converted first class into a nursery, parents wouldn't have to bring carseats on the plane and all the crying babies would be together : first on and first off, closer to bathrooms and a stewardess that could be present and distracting for them. i could say more, but I've said plenty already.

I would have given Alaska a 10 except bad experience last year when I purchased first class tickets for both my daughter (her first experience in 1st class) & self. After boarding and finding our seats aisle 2, I reached up to open the bid & trying to put my carry on bag in and the attendant told me that i couldn't use that bin, and I asked why not as I could see there was half a bin still empty. I was told that it was her personal things she was bringing home & it was breakable. So I was able to put my CPAP machine there but daughter had to use bin for aisle 3. Left me with a bad taste about Alaska because I paid first class & I feel attendant should have used the closet where they normally store their belongings. So who is the customer here and paying for the attendant's wages?? So my next flight I booked American Airlines and disappointed with Alaska.

The new policy of charging a fee to sit in row 6 or 16, now "premium seating" is bunk. I have a medical condition that dictates that when I need to use the restroom, I need to go now so I paid the "premium" fee to sit in row 6. On my first flight the stewardess announced that row 6 folks were welcome to use the 1st class restroom - which is why I paid the extra $$. On the second portion of the flight - again sitting in row 6 - I went up to use the 1st class restroom and a stewardess looked at me and told me "my bathroom is in the back". I was very surprised and said I had a medical condition and she swooped her hands around and bowed and said "then by all means". This was in front of all the 1st class passengers and I was totally humiliated and embarrassed. I turned around and walked down to the back of the plane and luckily there was an open restroom. I almost did not make it. I have to say I have never been more embarrassed by an employee of an airline in my life. I have to fly on Alaska because of where I live - but if I didn't have to, I don't think I would.

Having to have to sit next to a extra large person and told the door was shut, they could not move him, spent the flight standing in the back after belt light was off. What was particularly irritating was last row and when I boarded, crew was observing this. You may not like the direct words about buy two seats but failing to enforce policy and customer comfort was cause for complaint to the FAA. He had 3 extensions to belt and had to move inboard every time some one wished to access the restroom. Flown Alaska many times usually good. but in times of filling every seat, need to enforce the policy.

I took my trip of a lifetime to Alaska for a week of fishing. Great trip. However, my checked bag was just over the 50 lbs. "limit" and I was charged $75 because it was overweight. My other bag was a light-weight rod caddy required to transport my fishing rods. I think that $75 charge was excessive. Yes, they asked me if I wanted to remove anything from it but I chose not to unpack it with the long line behind me. This was at the Yakutat Airport. I just think that is a very excessive baggage fee for this Frequent Flyer member. My king salmon (frozen) fish that I caught was in my checked bag and it's added weight put my bag over the weight limit. Oh well, I won't be flying anytime soon but I consider the $75 charge to be excessive particularly since my other checked bag was so light! There was no other reasonable solution offered so I paid up for that frozen king salmon!

I booked a flight for a wedding that has since then been cancelled. It was very frustrating to discover that the cancellation fee is the price of the ticket. What makes it worse is they wont deduct the fee from the money I already paid for the ticket. I have to pay for it out of pocket and then hold a credit to fly with them again. I support having cancellation fees but they should be proportionate to the ticket amount and it should be deducted from the money that has already been paid. This policy is not customer focused and frankly enraging. They would not consider doing a one time waiver.

First delays and overbooking and requesting volunteers to give up their seats for $200 and a hotel stay!! then no AC while waiting inside the plane ... then engine issue while we were about to fly so we had to return back to the gate which took forever also .... then wait again in airplane with no AC while they figure out the issue ... then reboard and more delays .... reached home by 2am instead of original plan of 10pm

I have been flying Alaska since 2002 from SFO to PSP on almost a monthly basis and I can honestly say the onboard service have gone from poor to bad. Passengers used to be able to order drinks, you are lucky now to get a glass of wine. The excuse is the duration of the flight, well, that duration didn't change from 2002 to now. If that was the case, how come Virgin America offers almost any drink on that one hour flight?

People who live in Alaska usually refer to Alaska Airlines as the airlines that hold us hostage here. They raise their prices to fly to rediculous outrageous rates. I'm talking about four hundred some dollars one way to Seattle. And when people complain they say "our prices are so high because our pilots have special training to fly in Alaska." Right now Delta has moved in on their territory and their so called needs to be priced so high tickets have plummeted to 90$ to seattle to compete. We as Alaskans can only hope Delta sticks around.

Personally, I will never fly Alaska again. It was too hot in the cabin, the seats are too small and too close together for any leg room at all. It was a 5 1/2 hr. flight to Maui from WA state. My friend and I were miserable the entire trip.

Unfortunately sad to say, no it wasn't, in Nov traveled to Chicago w/AK AIR and was miserable by the time we finally landed. Seats are to small and everyone crowded like sardines, needless to say everyone in the isle was miserable. What a long long long flight to be uncomfortable. Service was great as usual though, thankful for that.
