Misfit certainly deserves those design awards we mentioned above: the Shine earns a nod for being the coolest-looking device we reviewed. Outside an accessory casing, it's nothing more than a sleek, quarter-sized disc with a few LED lights that will show the time or feature fitness alerts. You can opt for basic black or gunmetal gray to highlight the Shine's minimalist theme, or punch up the drama with one of six other vivid colors. If you'd prefer to wear it rather than put it in your pocket, Misfit offers necklace and wristband accessories that the Shine can be slipped into. We'd recommend this option, as it's very easy to lose the Shine - but you will have to pay an extra $49.95-79.99 for an accessory on top of the $99.99 you'll already be paying for the base piece. The Shine isn't all looks, though: it will track your steps, distance, calories burned and sleep. You can tap the Shine throughout the day to monitor your progress and see how far you need to go to reach your fitness goals. The Shine is made from anodized aircraft-grade aluminum and is waterproof up to 50 meters. As for the app, it's fairly easy to read and lets you view your progress in charts or graphs. If you're aiming to lose weight, you can also take advantage of the daily food journal and track what you're eating. It also offers the option to connect with your friends to encourage each other and engage in some friendly competition.

The Bad

Does not auto-sync
Sync to view tracking

While we like the Shine's design and functionality, it doesn't auto-sync like many other fitness tracker devices; you'll need to touch it to your smartphone to transfer data. This means that if you get curious about how many steps you've taken during the day, you'll need to sync the Shine to your phone, transfer the data and then either tap the shine or check the app to see your progress - what a hassle! Misfit could greatly increase their appeal - and their score here - by offering an auto-sync option. Support may also be a challenge with Misfit - while the website does feature an online help center, it wasn't working at the time of our review.

The Bottom Line

Misfit has great potential to become a go-to fitness tracker company. It has managed to combine some solid functionality with a very impressive design, although the syncing process lacks efficiency. We'd like to see better syncing in the future, as well as more devices to choose from, but the Shine won't disappoint.

Probably the simplest version of fitness tracking there is. Simple pedometer with a gyroscope is all you get. That and a pretty nifty app that converts your activity into a point system. Not the right product for everyone, but if it’s your thing then for the low price, it’s actually pretty decent.

Santa brought a Misfit Flash for my son on December 25, 2016. Since then we have had problems with it and we have also had problems with the replacement one. It is NOT, I repeat NOT waterproof.....absolutely NOT waterproof. The item only lasts 10-14 days and then putters out. At that point the customer service sends me another one. Sometimes it arrives within 7-10 business days, sometimes I have to ask again. It took 3 weeks between the first and second. Two days ago the second Misfit Flash suddenly stopped working for absolutely no reason. I would not recommend this product to anyone. It is a great product, but it has not stamina or reliability. I'm on my second shine replacement in less than 8 months. The first stopped working, period. it took 2 months and 28 emails to get it sent to me after being granted a replacement after the initial contact. I find myself now back to square 1: my replacement has been lost due to the flimsy sport band design. After 2 emails I was told it would be replaced. I should expect a shipping email in 24 hours and it to arrive in 15-20 days. Fair. Happy. Consider my last Customer Service experience a hiccup. Fast forward 10 days, no shipping email has arrived. I inquire and after 17 emails back and forth, I'm told "As you may know, we have just changed our warehouse and shipping system recently. However, the international procedure takes longer than expected. Therefore, our international shipping is on hold for a while. Our team is trying our best to bring it back as the soonest. Hopefully, it will be available in the next few day.". This was the same excuse I was told in March 2016. Poor customer service - yes, we will replace it, 15-20 days... the to find out they can't ship internationally. Alternative means to settle a warranty issue: USPS? FedEx? UPS? 2 for 2 for terrible CS, Misfit. Terrible odds.

Misfit is a great option if you're a first-time fitness tracker. They make their app easy and simple to use and have low profile fitness tracker options that double as cute jewelry.
